Hi followers and bloggers,
The effects of the cyclone at Wagait (which is located directly to the east of Wagait, more towards Kakadu NP) had died down slightly. There was no more thunder or lightening but heavy down pours. Which meant after having a lie in and catching the ferry in to the city at 11.20am we got drenched. Our bags are also soaked L I’m currently drying out my sleeping bag this evening. Jenny was good enough to drop us off at the ferry port and also pay for both of our singles back again!!!! She really had exceeded all expectations of a couch surf host-beyond generous and welcoming.
We also saw one of the guys on the ferry (Simon) who was at the darts last night, he gave us a lift to our hostel from the terminal to save us waiting for the us in the rain. Thanks Simon!
We arrived at the hostel, checked in and double-checked the time of the tour the next morning. They phones the company to check and told us that they are still deliberating whether the tour to Kakadu, Lichfield and Katherine will still
go ahead due to the cyclone close buy causing problems with road access.
After making our beds up, we went to buy lunch from the supermarket (pate, French stick and a pasta pot). We then had a dip in the pool at the hostel but because it was pouring with rain; I got cold quickly so we both went into shower. We had a chilled afternoon and then the phone rang to say the tour was going ahead as normal yesssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!
Early evening we walked to the waterfront in Darwin where there are a few restaurants. We desperately wanted to eat in one of them…. But the ‘B’ word prevented us. (Budget)
However, we thought we would treat ourselves to a decent meal from the supermarket so we bought a bottle of £5 wine, a decent soup for starter, fresh pasta and fresh pesto and cashew nut pasta sauce. This we cooked back in the hostel in the big kitchen with a few other travellers. We ate and drank our wine chatting to a guy from Estonia who is backpacking by himself (Eeekk). I have to say I really would hate
it travelling solo, even though you can meet so many people in hostels, it’s the long hours on buses, flights, trams etc that would make me feel so lonely. It’s also so lush to share it with someone and not have so many selfies- ‘cos they can do it for you.
After dinner we put on a load of wash and then repacked our bags. Up until this point (9.30pm) we have had no one else checked into the same dorm-excitement was starting to build that we have paid for a dorm and might actually get the room to ourselves…. but a guy has just walked in L.
Chilled/early night as 6am start for our tour: happy days!!!!!
Love V&N X
