It was an easy start today. I woke up with the alarm at 8am. My case just needs a little tweak, all the last bits to be put in. I got a single bag of cereal at the shop last night, I have enough milk left for my cereal, and one coffee, so that’ll be ok. I took Angelika’s pitta bread from last night’s dinner; I’ve got 1 pot of hummus left, so that’ll do for breakfast too. It’s a bit make do this morning, but I’m ok with that! I chose to have a black tea, so I can save my milk for my coffee to go! It’s crappy instant, so I put two in … for good measure. We checked out at 9:00, to leave at 9:15. We were all good to go on ... read more

After our amazing day eating in Sydney we still hadn't heard back from (or even met) our host at the house we were staying at. We made a decision to head northwards to a coastal town called Woolgoolga for a blueberry picking position. After a "short" 9 hour bus ride we arrived at an empty bus station in Coffs Harbour, 1/2 hour away from the fields. With no transportation, we messaged our work contact who sent a car to pick us up (after much haggling on the price). A student-aged South Korean couple picked us up and were both surprised that we had left the U.S. to work abroad at a blueberry field. This should have been a warning sign but we ignored it and all the subsequent red flags. We arrived at a dilapidated farmhouse ... read more

Day 2. Having made it abundantly clear to all in the vicinity the previous evening, when we checked in, that I wasn’t in a same sex marriage with Chris by confirming loudly that “the room has two beds right!”. We settled down to a night which ironically would resemble an old married couple. Chris constantly complaining that I hadn’t turned the fan on in the bathroom after I had rid myself of the last remnants of my Thailand trip. After some further bickering we finally settled down to a nights’ sleep. I was in trouble again on awakening as I had slept in and had missed an opportunity for an early morning fish in the pouring rain. Anyway, we soon put the Rockpool Motel behind us as we continued our intrepid adventure. An adventure that had ... read more

So surfing... In the middle of nowhere, and with the most enormous bugs we'll ever have the displeasure of meeting (about 3 inches long and they flew and BIT!) Spot X awaited us. After this awful sounding start, we'd like to clarify that we actually had a great time here. Staying there for one night in a decked out cargo ship container (complete with an enormous spider) we had a fun evening, making our first travelling friends over nachos, cards and (in Max's case) too much goon. For those of you who have not heard our explanations of this beverage, the only thing it can closely be described as is poison, despite being marketed as wine. There is even a little note on the side to let you know that it may contain traces of milk, ... read more

The late and great WS Churchill addressed the graduating class at Eton with the famous words I've borrowed for our title, and certainly, life requires us to show tenacity and endurance if we are to succeed at any worthwhile purpose or endeavour. With this in mind, I will now reflect upon the last couple of weeks of our around Australia adventure and describe what we have experienced and why we have needed to draw upon the wisdom of Churchill's words. At the end of our last blog we had parked ourselves in Bli Bli on the Sunshine (Ha Ha) Coast at the Riverside Caravan Park, fully intent on exploring the Sunshine Coast environs via car and foot and in our intrepid little dinghy 'Origami', via the Maroochy River. On our second day there we did indeed ... read more

We are back at Woolgoolga at our favourite beachside site .. unfortunately, though, for just one night, tomorrow we must move to a site further back. It is very nice sitting watching the waves and walking the beach. We spent our first night at Tuncurry, at a caravan park we haven't stayed at before but one we will stay at again. It was right on the water, where the river runs to the ocean, which meant a nice walk along the riverfront to start the day. Around Taree and Kempsey there is evidence of the heavy rain and local flooding they've had recently - quite boggy paddocks and full brown creeks. Once we reached Kempsey, we took the back road .. now quite bumpy due to the trucks from the roadworks for the new highway and ... read more

We are back at Woolgoolga, we arrived and were setting up just as the Melbourne Cup was running! I was wondering why the campers were all sitting together sipping champers! One year we must get involved in the festivities again! We went to look out to sea and there was a whale, not that far out, leaping out of the water. We thought we'd missed them - there are supposedly over 12,000 whales returning to the Antarctic after breeding in northern waters but we've seen only 2 or 3 this year. It's been a good couple of days. From Byron Bay we drove along the coast towards Ballina and found a couple of new (to us) beaches - Suffolk Park and a very nice one, Tallow Beach at Broken Head. These are around the southern side ... read more

The surf camp was at a place called Woolgoolga, which was quite pleasing in a way since no-one seems to have heard of it. Finally, I was visiting a place on the East coast which wasn't a total cliche! It's just some small town out in the relative boondocks, fairly near to the more well known Coffs Harbour. I got off at the bus stop (marked by a telegraph pole opposite a building with a statue of an elephant. Well of course) and was whisked away by minibus to 'Spot X', the site of the surf camp. I was told this was a secret location by people in the Byron Bay office, which does beg the question 'how come I saw it marked on road signs?' but never mind about that. As I got to the ... read more
