Our home for the last week of our Australian adventure was the southeast state of New South Wales. We spent a couple of days in the beautiful coastal town of Byron Bay; taking to the waves once more to further sharpen our surfing skills - at this rate we will be performing rescues when we arrive in Bondi Beach! Next up was the sleepy town of Port Macquarie. It boasts several stunning beaches, each as impressive as the other, with a beautiful coastal walk linking them. There was a very large surf the day we visited so the water was once again a no go. Having met hundreds of kangaroos since landing into Australia, we were keen to catch a glimpse of Australia's other indigenous animal - the koala. These guys are incredibly difficult to spot ... read more

Well everything started well enough, got away from work more or less as planned and then waited in 40 degree heat for the pre ordered cab to arrive so naturally it didn't. 15 minutes on the phone and then another 15 minutes waiting for the cab feeling pretty good about giving myself for leaving early enough to cope. Part 2 went more to plan, cold beverage in Leichardt followed by drinks and a meal in the now famous Enmore. Sydney in summer is just plain sticky, between the need to have the windows open and the consequent queue of mozzies taking a number to extract vital red stuff from places that need to be outside the sheets it is almost impossible to get to sleep. Brunch with the Italian community of inner western Sydney today and ... read more

And so to Sydney where we dropped into Bev and Andrew’s world and it’s fair to say we hit the ground running. They live in a brilliant location that is a short bus ride from the centre of Sydney and is within half a mile of over 50 eateries of almost every nationality. We had Greek, Italian, Japanese and Thai as well as a delicious BBQYO (barbecue your own) filet mignon and a fabulous home-cooked lamb BBQ (both BBQs expertly cooked by Andrew it has to be said). Oz operates a BYO (bring your own) wine policy and bottle shops spring up wherever the restaurants are; you can supply your own wine and the food is relatively cheap so it’s really easy to go out to eat - which means you never have to cook unless ... read more

Hi Friends - Google is a funny thing. I googled my name as a bit of an ego surf and this is the only place I seem to come up. So I hope I can keep this site a while longer, but I've begun blogging at heyjohnnymac.blogspot.com. That's where my most recent stuff is. You can also find me on facebook. The Preface Definitely not all weekends are like the one that comes to an end as I'm writing a blog about it in this very moment. On Friday I met Gav and we went to Sydney just to go to some random bars, drinking a few beers before we entered and a litre of Queensland rum before we even left the train. We've been at one bar where you can sit on the roof terrace, having a look at Sydney harbour and it's skyline. We went back to Wollongong with the last train and were drunk enough to discuss linguistic theories whereas the others tried to sleep. As we came back to Gav's place (about 2:00 in the morning) instead of going to bed we started a game of chess and paused it at quarter past ... read more

I'm really behind on these things- I'm finally able to update about Melbourne and I've already arrived in Sydney! When we left Surfer's, we left behind temperatures in the mid 20s, a beach front location, and our own apartments with beds, showers, and laundry. When we arrived in Melbourne it was a cruel shock, because it was rainy, humid, and cold. Our accomodations were a school gym (that didn't have any heating). Quite the change. It took me about 3 days to get acclimatized to the cold in Melbourne, and to actually begin to appreciate the beauty of the city. Everyday began the same- up for the bus at 8, transport to St. Peter and Paul Church for breakfast, and then grab a quick look on Facebook in the basement internet cafe before Divine Liturgy at ... read more

The time between NYE and the 11th was spent wandering the streets of Sydney, writing e-mails, thinking and trying to get my holiday pay from my former employers... There was a couple of days brief return to Katoomba which was relaxing. I had the house to myself for a few days, and spent the time watching the cricket on TV, reading, sunbathing, listening to music and generally not doing a great deal of sight-seeing. I knew I'e be back here when Corina arrived so I thought it would be better to see things with her...and I was right. This first week of January also saw me take my first trip to David's house in Lawson. It was a typical old wooden building with a large outside deck made by my uncle which is where most people ... read more

7, January, 2008 Dear Friends Well, Happy New Year. And I say that with tongue planted firmly in cheek. The rebel in me scoffs at the phrase, yet I still greet people with it this time of year. Really, what could be more hackneyed than wishing you a Happy New Year? Of all holidays, this one seems the most contrived. It doesn’t mark anything other than the calendar itself. I imagine those Gregorians must be smirking still, having sat up there in their dank stone castles plotting to get people all fired up about the passage of one more day. I can see them with their parchment charts and medieval talking points saying smugly “Let’s see if they’ll agree to this!” Of course, the people did. We’ve always been a gullible lot, trusting leaders to do ... read more

After returning from the Blue Mountains, the plan was to chill-out for a couple of days before the madness of NYE in Sydney. The couple of days in the run up to NYE passed without registering any interest. A visit to the doctor had lead to yet another set of anti-biotics that wouldn't work, however I was given some Sudafed, a drug with ecstasy-like effects that certainly made my time in Sydney a more enjoyable, if somewhat light-headed experience. The plan for new year was:... read more
