We began our trip just before 8am. We dropped the guinea pigs off at their pet motel at Amamoor then headed North (in the wrong direction) back through Gympie, Kilkivan, Goomeri, Murgon, Wondai, Kingaroy... we stopped in Dalby for Maccas and petrol... then had the longest, boringest drive through Moonie to Goondiwindi. We crossed the border and drove through Boggabilla (ick!) and onto Moree then finally arrived in Narrabri at around 3:35. It is not what we expected... more run down and dirty. But the the motel is nice. We went for a little walk around town and got some supplies at Woolies and the bottle shop. Then we talked Isaac into going next door to the bowls club for dinner. (We had a quick trip back to the motel room for Ava's vom-bag). We got ... read more

Hi all, today was a really long day. Got up at 4am all excited to be finally leaving for our trip to Fraser. We left home at 4.50 am and headed out to the Hume to meet the others. 14 hours later we arrive at our destination at Narrabri. We stopped quite a few times. Morning tea, lunch and plenty of restroom breaks, although not sure peeing against a tree or on the side of the road is classed a " restroom" break ( you can do this when you are only 4 years old). Lunch was a pie with sauce and similar food from a local bakery. Tried a chocolate eclair OMG it was awful (but I still ate it). We stopped at the CSIRO telescope just outside a town called Parkes. A pretty impressive ... read more

It rained until 2am yesterday and everywhere was boggy and full of puddles so we had a lovely lazy day hoping it would be better the next day. Today the area was still muddy but we decided to move on. I walked around trying to find the least boggy way for Barry to turn around in and came across the showground arena grandstand area, which was full of young people on horses again. One mother was walking to it carrying some tack. She told me that the three days of activity had been three different things. Friday had been an Inter-Schools Riding Competition; Saturday was “Show” day and today was a Gymkhana, which is held every few weeks in different locations. The wet ground and mud didn’t deter them, it seems. Once we left Narrabri, we ... read more

The sky was looking a bit overcast today and rain was forecast for later in the day so we decided to go and see Yarrie Lake first and go to the telescope after. Once we got onto the right highway, after a few detours trying to find it, the drive to the lake was easy, although we did get stopped by more roadworks. They were resurfacing the road. Yarrie Lake is noted for its abundance of birdlife because it has several different microclimates within a small area and each attracts different birds. We had seen some tiny doves as we approached the lake but another vehicle scared them off before we got close enough to identify them. At the lake, we could hear birds calling through one section of the woodland but we didn’t see them. ... read more

We had a slow start today but still decided to go and see the Sawn Rocks, which we’d been told were well worth the visit. They are 35 km from Narrabri with just a small section of dirt road leading to the car park. From there you walk through woodland on an easy path, with steel boardwalks along part of the track, that is rated as wheelchair friendly (although on one section you’d be hoping your passenger isn’t too heavy if you’re the pusher – it was quite steep!). At the end is the biggest set of organ pipes I’ve ever seen. They make the ones opposite Calder Raceway near our home look minute. Organ pipes are really natural pentagonal or hexagonal (5 or 6 sided) columns of basalt that have formed when the lava from ... read more

We travelled to Narrabri, our next stop, without any incidents but when we went into the “Free” camp we’d found on WikiCamps, we found a sign saying “No Overnight Camping” so we headed further up the road to the Narrabri Showgrounds and set up. (Later in the evening Barry put up his first post onto WikiCamps, correcting the wrong information they had about the “Free” camp. It took him about 2 hours!). We were surprised at how many other vans were already at the Showgrounds – must be the cheap rates. We’re paying $14 a night for a powered site. We also had a look at the Tourist Information Centre and the displays there. The largest of these was a huge cotton harvester, which really dominated the space. You could press a button and make the ... read more

Where was Friday lunch? Joan and I made it into Narrabri for a slightly late lunch. They had to check if the kitchen girls were still on duty. NSW country towns have reverse angle parking so we had to leave the van in a back street. The Hotel Tourist was a big country pub and served a mean chicken parmi.... read more

The job that we went to was terrible. Well..... we don’t actually know what the job was like because we left before we started work (16 hours after arriving!). We arrived at the farm after driving for 7 hours and then had to leave the car at the end of the 16km dirt road that led to the farm because the ground was so wet the car would have been bogged down. The farmers wife came to get us in the 4x4 and we drove up to “the cottage”, killing a brown snake along the way. As we pulled up, a million things went through my mind, but mainly the thoughts of “RUN”!!! The cottage was a shed, and as we walked in the smell of poo was overwhelming. There were mice and mouse poo everywhere, ... read more

It fun to people-watch when we're in a new town and it made me smile, when we drove into town to shop this morning, to see the local butcher, complete with striped apron and his belt with full knife box on it, walk into the bank. In the city it would have meant arrest for carrying a deadly weapon or perhaps several deadly weapons! Life is different in the country. Driving along the Newell Highway towards Coonabarabran, we saw a turn off to the Warrumbungle National Park so took that road, one we'd never taken before .. and here we'd thought we'd been everywhere in New South Wales! It was very nice country with sheep and wheat growing and, surprisingly an emu farm - lots of inquisitive emus came to see us when we went over ... read more
