Sorry for lengthy blogs, but these are as much for my benefit as anyones. Today was a true adventure for me and Iris. I left the town of Shepperton Vic and headed through Albury to see an old friend. It had been 6 years since catching up last and it was so lovely to see him, happy, married with a baby, and settled. As I headed off for the snowy mountains, I got to thinking about past, present and future and I realized that time moves fast, and if you dont pay attention, so many things can pass you by. While my reflections ran deeper than this today, I realized it was easy to feel nostalgic as I drove through the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen in Australia. That's the thing about natural beauty, ... read more

Well where do we start! No really, where do we start! Its been over 3 months since we posted a blog. The reason for this is that we've been hidden away in a national park in the middle of nowhere (not exactly true), with limited or no Internet access and masses and masses of work has meant that we've been far to busy anyway! Ok so the partying and snowboarding also took up quite a bit of our time as well. So we arrived at the Ski Rider Hotel Motel with little idea of what we were getting ourselves into. For a start we didn't appreciate that we would for the next 3 months be "stranded" in the middle of Kosiousko National Park, half an hours drive down the road to the nearest town of Jindabyne ... read more

Carissa and I have recently returned from 3 months living and working in the beautiful snowy mountains. The answer is yes- it really was as fun as it sounds. The snow was fantastic and there was never any shortage of folk coming down to visit and take advantage of the free couch. Our lovely flatmate Jen was very gracious in accommodating all our couch-surfing friends. Carissa worked at the Thredbo Pharmacy where sunscreen, crutches, Dencorub and knee braces were the order of the day. I worked in hospitality for a resort owned by Perisher which meant a free season pass. Carissa worked a 3 day on 3 day off rotating roster while I worked the breakfast and dinner shifts, which meant plenty of time was available to us to get up the hill and get our ... read more

Jindabyne to Charlotte Pass After a leisurely breakfast and a session at the Internet Cafe I headed up the road to Charlotte Pass. The road was much as I remember it from 30 years ago when I rode it on a bicycle, but I have no doubt it is now wider and better surfaced than it was in those days. It is a series of loooong uphill stretches, each followed by a much shorter downhill - until the end of the road is reached at Charlotte Pass. The return journey is naturally mostly downhill but being on a motorcycle this time it was not nearly as exhilarating heading back to Jindabyne as it was on the bicycle. Jindabyne to Dalgety After a brief visit to the Snowy Mountains Information Centre I decided to take a trip ... read more

Khancoban to Thredbo The Alpine Way from Khancoban to Thredbo is a very tight and twisty road with constant signs reminding about the dangers of falling rocks and slippery surfaces. Much of the road is signposted at 60km/h so there is little opportunity to ride at a speed which leads to dangerous situations. Some of the views are spectacular, with massive peaks in the background and green forests in the foreground. Again, there are many areas where the main feature is skeletal burnt trees from the fires a few years ago. All areas are recovering, but the effects will be obvious for many years to come. Thredbo village was quiet compared to how it must be in the winter months, but still had a significant number of people taking part in the various summer activities. It ... read more

Geo: -36.4151, 148.619Road trip around the Snowy Mountains....27thDec08-3rd Jan09Sydney - BowralFirst things first in order to go on a road trip you need wheels so I booked a car rental two and half months ago, I am so organized at times I make myself sick.... Sydney is all e-tolls these days so we registered the car online and planned to head south by the Sydney tunnel, but it turns doing this requires prior knowledge. We see the signs for the tunnel and the bridge one on top of the other, ok so far so good, the one on top is for the tunnel which implies left lane hand lane, ok so far not so good because it's the right hand lane and by the time you realize it's too late to switch! So over the bridge ... read more

Hello all After Goulburn we HAD planned to slip down to the South Coast of NSW and spend a week or so (between Nowra & Batemans Bay) and hopefully a little more pleasant weather, put the boat in the water, do a spot of fishing, eat oysters/seafood and veg out. But when there was late snowfalls at The Snowy, we decided we should bite the bullet, grit our teeth and bear the cold and head there instead, since the other 3 have never seen snow. So we headed off to Jindabyne and did a day-trip to Thredbo. Not much snow left there now - some very minor stuff, 2 days old, high up in the peaks. We took the chairlift at Thredbo and 'did' the trek to the Mt Kosciuszko Lookout (about 6km/return from the top ... read more

Hello! Wow how time flies! Apparently it's 3 months since I last wrote. Where does the time go??? Its a god job I'm not actually 'traveling' as such, because I'd have given up on trying to keep you updated long ago. There's not too much to tell..... ish! I spent the last couple of months in a tiny town called Jindabyne (yes the same as the movie, which happens to be very good if you come across it) which is located in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, about 6hours South of Sydney. Jindabyne is an Australian ski resort (yes they do exist) in that it does have snow and there are some so-called mountains, but its not really comparable to Europe or Canada. Anyway, never having done a ski season before, and by no ... read more
