Day 67 - Sale - Lakes Entrance We made the short journey from Sale to Lakes Entrance fairly early so that we could have the whole day in Lakes. The first point of call was the internet cafe (the first we had seen since Melbourne) before treating ourselves to our first Aussie fish and chips. I persuaded Rob to go for the "healthy" recipe batter, but as with everything, it is never as good as the full on lard version. However, the Gummy Shark was delicious and it was much nicer than the standard fish in New Zealand. After enjoying our lunch sitting outside on our portable chairs we decided to walk the track to the entrance of the lakes. We did a bit of a loop, walking along the lake front on the way out ... read more

We spend most of the week relaxing with walks around near by harbours, playing the Wii, and taking turns cooking dinner. All meals are washed down with plentiful quantities of wine. We also enjoy some sporting activities with a visit the beach where we enjoy a dip in the wonderfully cooling turquoise, blue and green sea just up from where the surfers, kite boarders and canoeists weave in and out of each other. I am preoccupied slightly by a nagging concern of shark attack that is somewhat heightened by the three reports of shark attacks in Sydney that week, an unusually high number for the time of year. I take a morning swim in the Dawn Fraser swimming baths. It was actually the afternoon but I had only been up a few hours. They are a ... read more

It seems the grapes have run out as far as McWilliams winery are concerned and my services as a harvest labourer / grape dynamo are no longer required. The last three weeks spent in the Hunter Valley YHA have been a stark contrast to the peaceful earlier two weeks working there, with the hostel jam-packed full of grape pickers to the point where you can barely fit your food in the fridge or get a seat on a sofa in the air-conditioned common area. This did have its advantages though, as there were many fun times to be had playing pool, ping pong, volleyball, poker, football, pool fights and 'frontal bomb' (think like a traditional 'bomb' into a swimming pool but face first) with a hectic international mix of Germans, Canadians, Welshies, Dutchies, Scots, Swedes, Estonians, ... read more

Day 193: Thursday 8th January - Wine tasting in the Hunter Valley Up early this morning as I have to check out ahead of my wine tasting tour, which starts at 9am. Sign up for a free feed this evening on my way out of the hostel.....us backpackers never miss the opportunity when something is free!! My sole purpose of coming to Newcastle is to do a tour of the Hunter Valley - which comes highly recommended. My friend Katie, from back in sunny Wigan said it was one of her highlights of her time in Australia a few years ago. Although wine tasting brought me to Newcastle, the idea of being in a city with the same name as my hometown is cool. A lot of the places around here have the same names as ... read more

With resources quickly being drained amidst the booziness and bright lights of Sydney, myself and another BUNACer, Mandy, decided to do some WWOOFing we'd stumbled across during our earlier visit to New South Wales' premier wine-growing (and tasting) region about 2.5 hours North of Sydney. WWOOF stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms and involves a few hours' graft per day in exchange for free room and board, and this position at the hostel we'd stayed at seemed like an ideal way to chill out and drink wine for a couple of weeks whilst saving moolah along the way. For a couple of days before heading on to the Hunter Valley I stayed at Chez Burbidge- a mate's place in the city of Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW 1.5 hours North of Sydney ... read more

Well its was a big day! Wine at Lindemans, Rosemount and others. The wine was great and some that they do not export. Jordan and I enjoyed lunch of smoked salmon, salad, pasta and sliced rare roast beef. Each course (4) was served with a different wine. One we both agreed was terrific (Semillion). We had a sparkling wine that was one of the best ever but when I enquired as to shipping cost - well lets just say you really need to come to Australia and try the wines. lol While on the bus going through the mountains Jordan spotted a wild kangaroo or wallabee, it was several hundred yards distant so we could not tell how tall he was. Lets discuss sports and Australia, we have watched Cricket, Rugby, Polo and Soccer. Soccer I ... read more

After a week in Sydney with Di and Shawn, I decided it was time to take the honeymooners up the coast a bit, with a pit stop first in the Hunter Valley for some wine tasting. The Hunter Valley is about a 2 hour drive north and inland a bit from Sydney. It is a beautiful area, with somehting like over 70 wineries in this area. We did a day long bus tour with Rover Tours that was great. They picked us up from where we were staying at 9:30am and took us to 6 wineries, a cheese factory, an olive factory, a chocolate factory and a pub as the last stop before dropping us off at our cabin at 5:30pm. It seriously was a full on day of alot of wine drinking because each winery ... read more

We decided to be good with our money and not go on an organised wine trail, although it was so tempting. Instead we took ourselves on an art and food trail using the regional brochure as a guide. First stop was a winery that had an indoor gallery and sculpture gardens. There were some beautiful large metal sculptures. We tried some of the wine there too and I was impressed that I persuaded Matt not to buy any even though we wanted to. After taking a break for some lunch in our van we went to the Hunter Valley Gardens. There was a waterfall, lakes, and various themed gardens like Chinese, Indian and Italian. The sun was shining hard and it was so relaxing to just stroll around looking and smelling the flowers without worrying about ... read more
