Spent Tuesday putting Silicon seal glue all over the new hooks to make them stronger and tried unsuccessfully to set up a blog site on the internet at the Armidale public library. Two hours after starting out on Wednesday, I slid in the mud while stopping at a viewpoint near Tamworth and “dropped” my bike. This instantly broke off the two plastic hooks on my right pannier despite the new reinforcements. Thankfully, the new metal bracing only bent, so I could re-bend them back to act as new hooks. By three on Wednesday we made it on back roads to Werris Creek, a rail town in decline with a nice monument to those who have died building Australia’s rail network. The next day we froze riding to Dunedoo, and today we rode through morning frosts and ... read more

We are still waiting for our first holiday lay-in but it's been so action packed that we haven't had a chance yet. However, it has all been good fun. Dubbo's championship golf course was treated to the superb drives and approach play of David, Hugh and Jon on Thursday. They hired buggies to take the hard work out of the morning's activities which was a good move as we ended up covering a fair bit of ground...most of it in the bushes. So while the girls lunched we lurched from one side of the fairway to the other in search of wayward shots. It was a little embarrassing when we came across members of the over 50s womens golf competition who all opted to carry or drag their clubs around. So we hid our shame by ... read more

We still have half the top floor of the wedding cake left in the fridge...so we thought we would add some more photos and a little bit of news since Sunday including some shots from our stay in Dubbo. A clean up day today after the departure of Natalie's brother and family this morning. Jon's a little upset that the pink elephant and kiddies bucket set have been removed from the shower room...he did protest long and hard for squatters rights for the pink elephant but apparently the rules are different over here and it was evicted. We had a last supper last night with the family and Jon managed to eat enough for twelve hungry disciples with the Big Shank Challenge at the triple S BBQ ranch. As you will see from the photo it ... read more

Well friends, we've finally done it. We've tied the knot doubly tight with a re-run of our wedding celebrations for the Australian viewing public. As the photographers from "G'Day!" the Australian version of "Hello!" over-ran Dub-Vegas, the motel owners rubbed their hands with glee. As all or most of you should know the 'excuse' for our trip, as if we needed one, was to be able to celebrate our marriage with our Australian friends and family here in Natalie's home town of Dubbo. And we were delighted at the effort everyone made to attend the celebrations. Natalie's brother, sister-in-law, nephew and niece flew over from Perth, Jon's Mum, Dad, Step-mum and Step-dad flew all the way from England, friends travelled from locations across Australia like Sydney and Adelaide, and Jon even ironed his shirt. Saturday night ... read more

Today was AWESOME! Woke up nice and early to get to school, and on the way- saw LOADS of live, wild kangaroos! School was rather uneventful, but I did get to scold some girls who were throwing paper at a boy with Aspergers Syndrome. My first disciplinary act as a teacher! After school, we (myself, Amy and Erin) were taken to Dubbo for "late night shopping" by Niomi, one of the teachers. (Shops usually close at 4 during the week, but on Thursday they are open later, this is common throughout the state as far as I've seen.) So in we went- we checked out a few malls and ended up at at this bowling place (here bowling or bowls means lawn bowling) eating at their Chinese buffet. It was crazy overpriced and had hardly any ... read more

Hey Everone! I will keep this short, because I am using my host family's computer and I don't want to seem antisocial. I'm not actually in Dubbo, but in a small place called WEllington about 30 minutes from Dubbo. WElligton has about 5000 residents. I'm staying on a farm that has sheep and hens and some crops too. The house dog is getting washed right now because it rolled around in a dead animal of some sort. Marian, is the home ec teacher at the school I'm at and is lovely. I'm staying here with my friend Amy and MArian's husband and daughter. Its pretty great, and they are pretty surprised that I'm a vegetarian. I'm sure the novelty will wear off soon :) So, on the way here, I was staring out the window in ... read more

First of all apologies to Coonabarabran for saying nothing happens there - apparently the day before we arrived, a gunman took over a house in the street next to the hotel, the police were called and the seige didn't end until Saturday afternoon, by which time we were ensconced in the hotel. From Coonabarabran we headed South west towards Dubbo. We were now on the fringes of the great plains to the west of the Great Dividing Range and everywhere you looked the land cried out for water, mile after mile of parched grassland and drooping gum trees. Many of the eucalyptus (gum) trees have a strange way of dealing with drought they loose their bark rather than their leaves and if it gets rally bad they drop branches before eventually succumbing to the drought. The ... read more

Australias premier Zoo is located on the western plains of New South Wales, we passed through Bathurst , Wellington enroute to the famous Dubbo Zoo. One stop over is the Bathurst Gaol , Ned Kelly was held here for a period of time, The sandstone facade is great for its craftsmanship and sense of intimidation as you near it. We suggest a stop at the Wellington Japanese gardens, Wellington is not the wettest of town , so, to see a manicured and lush garden that is visually spectacular + welcome releif from the hot western plains. The Dubbo Zoo is another top day, two days actually, They give you a pass for the following day for $25.00 . We were pleaed to see the displays layed out so as the animals have enough room ( acres ... read more

08.02.06 We were up at 2.50am to have our breakfast before walking to the train station with our oh so heavy bags. It was cool though, all the stars were still out. We caught our bus at 2.45am but instantly added a half hour because they were working on eastern time. (so that made the journey shorter!) The trip wasn't too bad because we were able to sleep a little until about 8am and we both got 2 seats to ourselves. We stopped off at about 9.15am at the only service station for miles in a place called Cobar. Here we met a german girl who we had already met in Broken Hill, she was driving to Dubbo. After 10 hours we arrived in Dubbo, it was so hot. We walked to the YHA hostel and ... read more
