Hi everyone. I thought I might start this up as a way to share how I'm going with the planning of our great South East Asian odyssey at Christmas time. It's actually got a lot more involved than what I thought originally, but it's exciting nonetheless! Here's the proposed itinerary: * Sydney to Darwin (flight) * Darwin to Singapore (flight) * Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and onto Penang (train) * Train from Butterworth to Bangkok (overnight) * Bangkok for New Years Eve! * Bangkok to Phnom Penh (flight) * Phnom Penh to Siem Reap (bus) * Siem Reap to Vientiane (flight) * Vientiane to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang (bus) * Luang Prabang to Hanoi and Halong Bay (flight) * Hanoi to Danang (flight) * Danang to Ho Chi Minh City (train) I know, I wish ... read more

I am flying out of Oz in 2 sleeps time! On Friday afternoon! I am so nervous and excited. After 8.5 years of marriage I find it hard to go solo and be responsible for knowing stuff, and finding stuff and understanding directions, etc. Normally, I just let information flow over me and sit back and enjoy the view. It is amazing how dependent I have become! I can't wait to see A again. I am going to miss W and the Kids so much. Over the last week I have been thinking about what an amazing husband I have to let me go overseas AGAIN, and enjoy myself AGAIN, while he stays with the kids AGAIN! I am very thankful indeed. ... read more

Our friends Sandar, Terence and Ohnmar, invited us to the Songkran Asian New Year and Water festival at the Wat Pa Buddharangsee Buddhist Temple at Leumeah. One of the highlights being delicious asian food from Australia, Burma, Cambodia, Lao, Malaysia, Sri-Lanka and Thailand. Ohnmar, Sandar and their mother were working on the Burmese food stall, raising funds for the new temple that the Burmese community have recently purchased at Smithfield. Lots of interesting cuisine was on offer, including deep fried quail, melon and Sri-Lankan love cake. Most of the children and many of the adults got into the swing of the Water festival using buckets, tubs, and water pistols to drench anybody who was not on the ball. I got a tub of ice water down my back as did Lorenza, but the person who wet ... read more

Sorry it's been a while, I have had hardly any time to myself these past two weeks and it's been difficult to keep up my diary. As most of you know I have been staying with Elise, my good friend and ex, about two hours out of Sydney by public transport in the small farming town of Camden, which has a very English feel to it. Elise has been my tour guide here and we have seen lots of places despite the gloomy weather evident in my photos. There have been frequent storms here in New South Wales for pretty much the whole time I have been here, with a few days of sunshine in between. I will attempt to list here as best I can the places we visited. When I arrived in Sydney I ... read more

Sitting at home now with my family thinking about my 8 month trip. I'm feeling scared and a bit anxious before embarking on this solo trip, but when i think about it my worries go away. how many times do you get to travel overseas when you are 23. when i get back i'll be turning 24. I'll work at least 2 years in full time employment at Accenture. I'll be 25, turning 26 by that time. by giving myself a bit of perspective of the constraints of age seems to work well in calming me down and giving me a big picture perspective of what lies ahead of me... read more

Up at dawn again for a rush hour drive into Sydney to return the van. We didn't have a very good map and somehow fluked stumbling across a road we knew was near the depot. We gave the van back, told them about Gemma's experiences with insect bites every night in the van and all we got in return was a blank look. Overall the idea of exploring Australia in this way is an excellent one and something that we'd definitely recommend. Wicked Vans were a bit of fun, but more expensive than their less colourful competitors apparently. The insect bites might sound trivial but they were a big deal, and they definitely adversely affected our experience. That said, being able to just stop at the side of the road and sleep makes long drives cheaper ... read more
