The 2005 Philadelphia Flower Show This year's Central Feature exhibit is titled "America the Beautiful," and showcases great garden ideas from around the country. William Penn had once described Philadelphia as a "green country town". The Pennsylvania Horticultural society founded in 1827 has worked diligently through the years to maintain that important connection of community through horticulture. The Flower Show proceeds go to support the non-profit activities of PHS, included Philadelphia Green, a national model for urban greening projects. This year, the flower show included an exhibit "When Life gives you Lemons...make Lemonade", which raised awareness and funds for pediatric cancer. HAPPY EASTER TO ALL AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BECKA This past week Jennifer, my daughter, came to stay with us for her spring break. Jennifer, now prefers to be known as Katherine, her middle name. This is a family name which honors 2 aunts, who recently passed away and a great-grandmother. Katherine arrived on Monday. We had been saving some trips for her visit. One day we rode bikes around Green Valley to relax and become familiar with the area. Then we started off on 3 trips to Nogales, Mexico, Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Biosphere2. One of her courses now is astronomy, so her favorite place was Kitt Peak. Nogales was quite a hoot. Just going from store to store and experiencing a different place and culture was great. We ate a very good Mexican ... read more

One fine day in L.A. I (Gerry) decided to visit the Getty Center in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. I reckoned it was only 4 or 5 miles away so I set off walking, not always an easy thing to do as most US routes are set up for cars not pedestrians. I didn't pass a single person and on long stretches there wasn't even a pavement, but I had the company of thousands of cars driving along the world's busiest road, the 405 Santa Monica Highway! The Getty Center is a museum and art gallery built over 750 acres by the J.Paul Getty Trust. The building itself is an architectural wonder (although I wasn't overly impressed with it). Most of it is made from a light-coloured stone called travertine, 16,000 tons of it! ... read more

Okay, this solidifies the travel plans a bit more. Lisa will be flying in on May 1st to help me and Jake sell all our worldly possessions and move to storage in Eagle River area so that we can leave Homer by the 16th. My mom's ticket was bought for August 5 to fly home to Minneapolis, this is plenty of time to mosey through BC and the Yukon and back to Homer to check out the Kenai Peninsula and fly home. Jakes tickets are purchased, but his return flight doesn't leave until Sat. July 23rd now which gives us an extra day, but his outbound flight had to be arriving in Seattle at 5 am on the 20th. This means we need to leave Alaska one day ahead, early on the 15th instead of the ... read more

And now, the waiting gameI really hope the "Confidential Financial Information" form will not be the do-or-die decision breaker of my application. I haven't had a chance to apply for my loan for the upcoming academic year yet, so I'm not quite sure what I'll be getting. It might even be more, as the tuition and expenses will be higher due to my being elsewhere. I filled it out to the best of my ability, rushed to the post office where I just made it in time and the lady was really kind to offer me a way to pay for postage but not send it right then, as I needed to go to CVS again to re-take the pictures so I could drop it off at the mailbox today and have it done with. ... read more

Okay, so I already have a change of plans. My grandmother "Mamie" just informed me by email that she will be in Minneapolis for the first two weeks of June. This changes my plans with going to Ontario. I am going to Ontario because my children have never been to our family's annual camping spot there, and my sister is bringing her husband and was looking forward to having as much of the family there as possible. But, at the same time, my children have not seen my grandmother since they spend one afternoon with her and Papa at the Casino in Hinkley in 2002. I was going home to pick the girls up and my grandparents were leaving for Texas after having not been able to see the girls all summer. I arranged to have ... read more

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open." -- Jawaharal Nehru Web sites Hilton Hawaii Village Text Saturday, March 26. I keep waking up at 2:30 my body clock thinks it is 7:30. So we got up early and planned our day to Diamond Head. First things first, we need to move to the Hilton Village today, to meet my friends. So we checked out and got the bus to the Hilton, where they stored our luggage until Cherie and Rick arrive this evening. Time to move on. Next we began our wait for a bus to Diamond Head, when a limo came along. He matched the bus price, if ... read more
