Well after many glorious days in Santa Fe, it's time to get to work on the ol' blog. Since we last posted, we've njoyed the outdoor pursuits of Northern New Mexico. One of the most beautiful high alpine forests we've seen is in Bandolier National Monument, home, some six hundred years ago to the Pueblo Indians. On an historical note, we found huge bear turds with animal hair in them which led to an intense debate about whether, when face to face with a bear, do you yell loudly to scare the bear or play dead in hopes the bear is a dumb bear. Apparently it depends on the type of bear you are faced with and the outside air temperature, but really, like I am going to go back to AP Bio and study ... read more

North America » United States » Virginia April 24th 2007

I'll make this quick because I already wrote once. Has been a very interesting week here. Stranded in A (very Nice) hotel in Chantilly near Washington. Would have cost over $40 each to get anywhere for a day so have had some down time after New York and caught up on a few films ect. Just had constant rolling news on this Virginia College thing. All the more appropriate as the guy went to school in the town we were in and grew up in the next town along! No mention of it out and about though, don't know if thats a good thing or not? Other than that we just walked to the shop each day and played cards on the grass outside. Has been thouroughly enjoyable if not hard core travelling. Sat in a ... read more

Hey Everyone. It has been a very busy, but very positive past few weeks. I recently won the Undergraduate research award at University of Maryland, which included a $1000 prize. It was nice to have my work recognized. Now I am working on trying to finish all my school work, move out of my apartment, submit my research for publication, figure out about graduate schools, and get everything prepared for my traveling. So yeah, I have a few things to do. Anyway, Just wanted to let you know I am beginning my travel Blog. I hope you all enjoy it. I will be leaving for my trip May 17th. It is very soon. ... read more

cant bloody believe it, first full day here and i fall asleep on the beach with my sun bins on and now have stupid panda eyes, not a great start. anyway arrived in honolulu yesterday absolutely shattered following early morning flight from calgary to denver (things to do in denver when you're dead=nothing, things to do in denver when you're alive=nothing! although i did buy a watch which was the only point of interest) and then here. you cant help loving hawaii as soon as you get off the plane, tropical air, awesome sunshiiiine, and even the bus journey through the shittier part of honolulu was alright. im staying at the waikiki beachside hostel and although its actually a block (yes a whole block!) from the beach its a pretty sweet setup, not just as im ... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Chicago April 24th 2007

While staying in Milwaukee, we caught a bus to Chicago (which was 1.5hrs away) for a two day trip. We used MegaBus for the first time and got $10 return tickets!! Not bad at all! The first day in Chicago we had absoultely beautiful weather! It would've been in the mid 20's and we were in t-shirts. The second day...got down to 4 degrees celcuis and I wasn't really dressed for the occassion!! Can't believe it can go from how it did on the Tuesday, to how cold the next day! (Um...actually what am I talking about - I live in Melbourne!!) Anyway...Chicago is a really cool city. The buildings are really impressive to look at with both old and new architecture, with Lake Michigan as a backdrop to the city and the Chicago River ... read more

Sorry it's been so long since I last wrote on this! I promise I haven't been lazy - it's just been impossible getting on a computer for anything other than Greyhound/hostel/hotel booking recently. We were reduced to using the local Holiday Inn last week to book stuff - we even managed to use their shuttle (yay my being so tight with money!) rather than forking out for a taxi. It doesn't look like we've been far since I last wrote (NY to Long Island!) but we have been to Washington DC and Chantilly, Virginia in between (and Maryland on an impromptu bus stop. There were no cookies). We only actually made it into DC today because of the ridiculous transportation costs otherwise. It was good though (and I'm getting arm muscles from all this backpack carrying. ... read more

Last week was super busy (although this week will be even busier.) I finished up my community service at the elementary school on Thursday, but I am returning Tuesday to watch the boys present their science fair projects to their parents, which should be fun. I am sad to leave but it will be nice having a couple of free hours during the day from now on. Wednesday we had a huge exam in our Mexican Identity class, so to celebrate that night Amy, Tina, Lizzie, Brian, and I went to watch a lucha libre (wrestling). It’s very popular here, so even though I am not into wrestling at all, I felt like I should go to experience the culture. It was really funny so I’m glad we went. Surprisingly lots of families go, including ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Diego » La Jolla April 24th 2007

Hi Folks Well, Rachel and I have parted ways with Ashley and Helen for a while. We've hired a car with Rachel's mate, Katie and headed on down to San Diego. It was wicked! We got the San Diego trolley and visited the Old Town. Very Mexican! Did some well needed shopping. Then we drove along the top of the Mexican border (in the dark) into the Arizona desert. Got stopped by some weird border control cops. We thought it might be to check if we were mexican immagrants. However, there are loads of military bases around and 'strange lights' so it may have been more than that.......freaky! Anyway, US is MUCH colder than our previous locations and we're feeling it. Also feeling the food.....in a terrible way! Yup, I said it. American food sucks! It's ... read more

I'm an outdoor man, and I don't do any work unless I want to. -Johnny Weissmuller Hey everybody, Ideally, if you are getting an email saying that I wrote this, I'm awesome. If not, I'm pretty cool but not quite at awesome status. I wanted to give everybody a head's up as far as where I'm going to be and what I'm going to be doing (roughly). On Tuesday, May 8th I'm going to pack up all of my stuff here in Murray and head back to my folks' house in Louisville KY. The following morning, I get to drop Ash off at the airport (she's going to San Fransisco for a sweet job interview) and head down to Versailles KY for a teambuilding contract to make a bit more money before I become a professional ... read more
