STAYING Cabanas Tulum PLACES TO VISIT/SEE Coba Coba Coba The Tulum Maya Ruins is perched on a cliff above the turquoise Caribbean waster. It creates the perfect backdrop for the thousands of tourists that visit it each day. The Tulum ruins are made up of mostly small ornate structures with stuccoed gargoyle faces carved into the corners. By far the site’s most impressive structure is El Castillo. Tulum emerged relative late in Mayan history around A.D. 1200. The name Tulum (wall in Mayan) probably refers to the thick stonewall that encloses the site’s 60 ... read more

At the moment I'm working 10 hour days, six days a week and trying to fit in some kayaking and so forth, so there are few hours in the day left that I'd like to be inside on the computer. The weather has finally warmed up a bit, most days now around 15-20C, but the water is still ice cold (as I found out tonight kayaking), so swimming is still out for another month or so. More wildlife has been spotted of late - I saw my first racoon the other night in front of the house on the other side of the road, and at the bus stop near work there's a groundhog that sits on the roadside nibbling grass. ... read more

Mon 30th April - Wed 2nd May - Cancun - Spring Break Three beautiful days on the beach in Cancun. ThThe water here is a beautiful turquoise colouir and its as warm as a bath to swim in! Our hostel feels like a treehouse. Its all made of wood with hammocks outside. It's still crazy hot but there's a breeze by the sea and at about 5pm its perfect for swimming. We went out with a gaggle of australians to Senor Frogs - I can't repeat what it was like coz of the old 'what happens in ....stays in....'. We spent a beautiful day on the isla mujeres - all the activities are too expensive for backpackers but we lay in hammocks and watched a big group of tourists successfully find this guy on his honeymoons ... read more

The New Staes PierceFriends and family, thank you so much for all your support and encouragement. It really is amazing to see how far word travels. Sorry for the delay on the latest entry, I have had a little more difficulty finding a computer to use long enough to complete a full entry. I wrote my last entry way down on the Eastern Shore of VA and had a fantastic weekend with my good friends Shannon and Serena. The good times continued that Sunday when Shannon and I packed up my bike and bags into her little car and drove up to Ocean City, MD. Yes, that is right, I cheated that day's 60 mile ride in the comfort and camaraderie of a short road trip. We spent the afternoon walking the boardwalk from the north ... read more

Hello Well the first leg of our journey is nearly over. We leave for Los Angeles this afternoon, where we have 3 days then we fly to Tahiti where we have another 3 days. Then finally onto Queenstown, New Zealand and job hunting straight away. If we cant find jobs then you all may be seeing us alot sooner than you had hoped. We are currently in Isla Mujeres, a beautful island off Mexicos coast, by Cancun. We have been chilling here for 5 days, working on our tans. We popped over to Cancun yesterday, so glad we never stayed there. Very overpriced and the beaches werent very good at all. Before here we spent a week in Playa del Carmen, a really nice resort just south of cancun. The beaches where stunning, so many nice ... read more

Well, I've now left my former home that was Fort Mac, and have been living in Edmonton for the past month. I've moved in with Jesse in her apartment and things are going well. I was scheduled to be in the office for 2 months, but got transferred to a more pressing construction job after only 2 weeks. So I'm back into old tshirts and jeans, from the shirt and dress pants I briefly wore. Luckily I'm working in a yard just out the back of the office block, so I haven't had to move again. So far it's been good, and im learning things I wouldn’t have on my last job. We are now definitely in spring. It hasn’t snowed in 2 weeks, and temperatures are now in the mid teens. I've cracked out my ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Anchorage May 10th 2007

Thursday may 10 Some people have asked us why we landed in Fairbanks as our first Alaskan stop off. To Territorians it’s a bit like going first to Katherine before Darwin. Our answer is that we wanted to get over any jet lag especially before Maree worked at the school. Really the jet lag has not been any problem. And secondly we wanted to sample/experience “Real Alaska” and it’s people before coming to the big smoke. Today we broaden our horizons. After picking up a hire car our first adventure is the change in road rules. Then it’s off to Chena Hot Springs. With ice capped mountains all around we strip off to bathers and descend into steaming hot water. It is really uncomfortably hot at first and there is a strong sulphur aroma, very ... read more
