STAYING Cabanas Tulum PLACES TO VISIT/SEE Coba Coba Coba The Tulum Maya Ruins is perched on a cliff above the turquoise Caribbean waster. It creates the perfect backdrop for the thousands of tourists that visit it each day.
The Tulum ruins are made up of mostly small ornate structures with stuccoed gargoyle faces carved into the corners. By far the site’s most impressive structure is El Castillo. Tulum emerged relative late in Mayan history around A.D. 1200. The name Tulum (wall in Mayan) probably refers to the thick stonewall that encloses the site’s 60 structures. We had a podcast about Tulum, so we just walked and listened to the history of Tulum on our I-pods. Bob took a drip and we headed to our hotel.
The Cabanas Tulum…. this was, hands down, the worse place we have stayed in the Yucatan. The good news is the bungalow is right on the beach, maybe a hundred yards to the Caribbean. The bad news is, it is old and not well maintained. As we brought in our luggage, I spotted a creepy crawly “thing” about the size of a mouse. I nabbed the
critter with my sandal and looked about for more.
Bob was determined to go to yet another ruin, Coba. I have had my fill of ruins, and the temps are over 90, so off he went. I read my book on the beach and enjoyed the surf. This area is rocky and filled with seaweed and not conducive to swimming. Before long, I discovered our toilet was not working. Removing the lid, I found water shooting straight up. Explaining this to the Spanish-speaking workmen was tricky. In tromped the repair people, back and forth------on and on.
It was about now, I realized Bob had been gone over 5 hours, surely the “Banditoes” got him. Well, this is a dive, the bathroom isn’t working, who knows how many more creepy crawly things are lurking, no air condition, a useless beach, not even a fan, and Bob has gone missing----what fun!! Oh for our motor-home sitting in Pittsburgh!
I am not one to sit, and there is only one-way in/out of this “beach paradise”, so I decided to go walking looking for Bob and the rented car. There he was, happy Bob, on his way “home”. By now the
repairmen were gone, people were in the Caribbean swimming??? and Bob thought things were great, what was wrong with me? He told me all about “Coba” and the hitchhikers he had picked up, etc, etc……
After a pleasant dinner up the beach at a lovely restaurant, “WE” decided to leave tomorrow!!! One day in this paradise is enough. If there is one creepy crawly thing…. there are more.
