The south road leading out of Yellowstone linked directly into the Grand Teton National Park. An American tourist at Old Faithfully told us, “the Grand Teton Mountains come straight out of the ground”. Ben and I laughed at this, “of course where else do the mountains come from?” When we got there however I understood exactly what he meant when he said it. Unlike most mountains ranges, which gradually build with little mountains and hills first, the Grand Teton’s just appear with no preliminary accumulation. The mountains do just appear to come ‘straight out of the ground’. We slowly drove through the Grand Teton National Park, making a brief stop for lunch and of course at the gift shop. As we drove through the park, the sheer beauty of the mountains astounded me. Sharply cut into ... read more

Just incase anyone is planning to do a similar drive to this, remember the drive from Grand Canyon to Yellowstone Park IS NOT 12hrs, its about 16 with the time change!!! SOo we left around 8 am and didn't arrive till 1am in the morning!! After a flat tire, and 16 hrs in the car we were ready to just relax today. Slept in and headed to see the Old Faithful Geiyser. We saw so many buffalo and a few deer, a couple foxes and a coyote. We made it back to our campsite, and it rained for about 4 hrs, so we just watched a movie in the tent and ventured into West Yellowstone for supper. And now we are parked in a best western parking lot, stealing there internet!! Sooo another long drive tomorrow ... read more

Today is, June 1 2006. After a couple of weeks in the canyon country of Utah, we've moved up to the high mountain country of Northwestern Wyoming. Right now we're at a commercial campground in West Yellowstone, MT after spending a week in the Tetons and Yellowstone. Everthing is green and wet up here with tons of water in rivers, creeks, and snow compared to dry and red in the canyon country. We haven't had any problems with the camper and we're getting pretty good at the dry camping routine. Being self contained with water and propane and being able to build campfires, we just finished a 7 day stretch in the woods. No news, phones, TV and didn't miss it. The elk and bison are losing their winter coats so they're kind of scruffy looking. ... read more

Unlike other National Parks we have been to Yellowstone is by far the most remote. Set predominantly in the Northwest corner of Wyoming with parts of the park crossing into both Idaho and Montana. The nearest major city was Salt Lake, which was back in Utah some 350 miles away. However the seclusion and remoteness only added to the mystery and tranquillity of this place. Entering at the Southeast entrance it was still a further 27 miles before we hit the main 167-mile loop road. Along the way there we spotted a Bison and desperately stopped the car in order to take a picture, not realising that Bison are in abundance all over the park and that this was one of many that we would eventually see. The road, lined with snow in places and at ... read more

May 26 Day 12 Vernal, utah, Dinosaur National Monument, Flaming Gorge, Rock Springs, Wyo. GPS Lady's Revenge. Our drive to Dinosaur National Monument is supposed to take about 15 minutes. The GPS lady had us driving down a road barking commands to turn right on nonexistant roads. I don't know what got into her mind. Maybe she was still upset from yesterday when I didn't pay attention and missed a turn. Geez, give me a break, having two touchey females in the car is just too much to take. I turned around and found drove for 5 miles and found a crossroads grocery store. M went inside to ask directions (men do NOT do that) and was told the Dinosaur place was just down the road we were on. Another 15 minutes and we were there. ... read more

Setting off early yet again, myself and Marcus drove from Cody to the east entrance of Yellowstone, to encounter a bizarre change in weather; it must have dropped 20 degrees F as soon as you went across the checkpoint and there was alot of fog and snow still left from the winter. Unfortunately there were roadworks for the first 6 miles or so into the park, so we and about 6 cars had to be taken through with a convoy vehicle before we descended onto the north of Yellowstone Lake. The weather improved as we drove across the park and we did get to see some wildlife, Bison and deer in particular. Yellowstone is amazing and there are two loops you can take the north and the south, we chose the south as you get to ... read more

Well setting of early Monday morning myself and Marcus endured the 4 hour drive across Wyoming to Cody a wild west town that is a gateway to Yellowstone National Park on the east entrance. We arrived at Cody around 11am and checked into a cheap motel for the night before heading out for some genuine mexican cuisine and local beers downtown. We then visited the Buffalo Bill Historic Centre which has 5 museams within; Buffalo Bill museam, a Native Indian exhibit, a special arts exhibit, western guns exhibit and local natural history museam. There was alot to take in at this place, but it was interesting to learn about Buffalo Bills Wild West show that toured until 1913 when it went bust and people were getting into Cinema which made such performances unpopular. Then we went ... read more

I took a four day jaunt down to Grand Teton National Park and took a nice three day tour of some of the glacial lakes at the base of the Teton range and Two Oceans lake in the Northeastern part of the Park. Day 1: Two Oceans Lake and Hermitage Point The first day started out very bland and overcast with threats of drizzly doom intermittent thru-out my hike around Two Ocean's lake. The whole day I saw hardly a soul except for the occasional coyote, moose cow, and a whole herd of elk doing their thang out in the willy wacks. It was a little intimidating being out in bear country by myself, but armed with my trusty walking stick and a healthy dose of paranoia to fuel my sporadic and random shouts, songs, and ... read more

Through the northern enterance this time we manged to get into the park. There was this ranger who didn´t want to let us in since we were driving a car with virginia license plates. We had to pull some strings there and finally agreed on driving backwards in the park... that´s pretty hard to do you know. Specially on winding roads... The weather again was great. In the 90´s unfortunatly that also made the animals hide more. They also were hot and therefor were looking for shade. I don´t blame them. The buffalo´s did not have that many baby´s as two years ago. We guess they have had a very hard winter here... and that some of the buffalo didn´t make it to spring. They all look very skinny... Well for a buffalo that is. You ... read more
