Lake Tahoe 17-18/10/05 We drove as far as Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe and stopped overnight. The next morning we hiked up Eagle Rock to take in the views and try out the new lens. There was a fire over the other side of the lake which had been burning for a couple of days, and you could see a thin layer of smoke spreading out across the lake. We chatted for a while to a couple called Tammy and Terry (encouraging them to take the trip to the Amazon that they had always dreamed about) before heading back down into town and replacing our Petzl head torches which had been destroyed in the bike crash. We then drove on to Elko, home of the Cowboy Poetry Festival (of which we have no examples) and had ... read more

Rock Springs, WY Middle of the Red Desert, Bunny's run rampant here like squirrels Only they don't climb trees and often end up as road kill. Drove past Independence Rock without realizing it "Hey Megan- what's that larger rock over there?" Almost got run off the road several times by truckers going West on 80. Bully Semis. Old mining city surrounded by rolling hills, They look like painted flats, scenic paintings, illusions, Megan described them as a "Navajo Blanket", Stretched out over a sleeping giant, At night the hills disappear, And leave just a dark void Between the city street lamps and the star lit sky. A difficult week as far as the kids go, They all seem to be enjoying rehearsals and the show, But attention and focus is lacking. Mostly due to rehearsals now ... read more

I started thinking about seeing the Panama Canal six years ago after seeing the Erie Canal. I never really thought about the fact that the Canal really wasn't all there was to see in that country!!! After all, even an internet search in 1999 turned up very few leads on tourism in that country, especially since I was interested in only low-priced( translate " cheap") options. So when, our daughter said "Let's go for it" last fall, I now found a tour site "Extreme Panama" that filled my need for low cost and her need for seeing the whole country. Never mind that I ignored the fact that I might not be the physical specimen I liked to believe I still was!! After all, I had spent the better part of my 74 years abusing my ... read more

Currently in Douglas, Wyoming- an hour or so out of Casper- recovering from my two and a half weeks vacation. Left Montana on Saturday and decided to take the scenic route down through Yellowstone. Relying fully on our Walmart Atlas (found in our new truck, which we have named “The Proud Mary”- the truck not the atlas) as opposed to Mapquest, we mapped our route like people did in the old days. Unsure of how much time it would actually take and being on a deadline- two days to get to Douglas, we unfortunately had to hurry through Yellowstone and thus were only able to enjoy that which we could see from our truck and the road. We did stop a few times for pictures. As you can see. (I have higher quality copies of these ... read more

”When I rest, I rust.” ----German Proverb . We decided last night to start heading home, the Tetons will still be there another day. We traveled out of Yellowstone by the East Gate and said “Good-bye” to the bison still clogging traffic as they eat their way into winter. On trip home included a stop in Cody,WY. Then we drove to Forest City Iowa, to visit the Winnebago factory, dealer. I am convinced the new VIEW will make our travels so much more pleasant. So we are gathering information and comparing price. Our journey has included 14,000 miles, the experiences, the sights and the people we met, were mind-boggling. We have memories to cherish and to laugh at. So WHEN we are oldER we can sit and remember when…. It was truly a trip of a ... read more

"Silence is the true friend that never betrays" --Confucius August 26, 2005, Friday. We planned to get to Yellowstone today, but Kel has a UTI and we waited and waited for a script to be approved and faxed from Pittsburgh to Bozeman. We finally got the meds and were on our way about noon. We arrived at Yellowstone from the northern entrance and got our mail at the post office. This is our last mail pick-up until we get home. We walked around Mammoth Hot Springs. It is quite a build up town, with hotels and restaurants and shops. It is also hot! After being north in the cool weather all summer, the heat is a surprise, but these are “hot springs”. We continued on to Fishing Bridge, our home for the next few days. ... read more

The Shahs go to Yellowstone . . . over 2 million acres of protected land. We headed out the first day to see the famous geysers and, within 15 minutes of driving, had our first wildlife sighting - a bison on the side of the road. We actually passed it, turned the car around to slowly creep up next to it, and started photographing from different angles to capture the moment. By the end of 3 days, bison sightings were so common that I became disinterested. . . herds of them can be seen at waterholes, on hilltops, in valleys, along the road, crossing the road . . . of the 3,000 bison in the park, I think we saw the vast majority of them . . . and, frankly, they just aren't cute animals. Today was a big drive day. We left Idaho as early as possible (waited long enough for the sun to be out of our eyes). We blazed through Montana and ended the day in Sheridan, Wyoming. We were surprised by the terrain in Montana. We both thought it would be relatively flat, but it has lots of peaks and valleys which combine for an exciting ride of climbing and coasting in and around a lot of mountains. It wasn't until late in the afternoon that we got to some straight roads. Part of the fun of travelling in places that you have never been before is stopping along the way for coffee and bathroom breaks. We learned that Montana has a casino in almost every town along the I-90. The only one that did not have ... read more

Jake made breakfast this morning, fried potatoes and bacon and eggs. Mom and the girls and I went for a walk along the river this morning. Someone had made a neat fort on the bank in miniture, though I didn't have the camera with me to take a picture. We hope to make it to Missoula by tonight. We are on our way to Yellowstone and left at 9 am from camp. We have been seeing all sorts of neat flowers and sights in Yellowstone. When we came through this May there was snow in the south entrance and we went through a snow storm at the east entrance. We made the top loop for most of the way. We saw a real idiot standing just feet away from a bull bison with his children. Soon ... read more

We spent two days in Wyoming at both the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. The first day we went to Grand Tetons. We did a hike around Jenny Lake and then up to Hidden Falls. The view was beautiful but once we got to the top it started to downpour. We managed to stay mostly dry on the hike back and then of course when we finished it stopped raining. I called my Mom when we got back to the bus and found out that the heir to Wal Mart had crashed his plane and passed away in the park earlier that day. We could see the helicopters circling looking for his plane. That night we camped near Yellowstone. I was very excited to use my new tent for the first time. Although I was ... read more
