On May 12th through 15th, Sara, Fiona, and I took the Megabus and explored Milwaukee, Whitefish Bay (a suburb of Milwaukee), and Chicago. Peg and Dick were extremely kind and welcoming; we stayed at their house in Whitefish Bay. It was a beautiful area, with Lake Michigan and all. Monday, May 12th, we got to Milwaukee at about noon, took the city bus and got off at the wrong stop, about two miles away from their house. Peg was really nice to come and get us. That evening, Fiona, Sara and I walked to Bayshore, an outdoor mall (that's the stop we got off at originally.) The walk to and from the mall was really pretty, and it was a really nice day. Tuesday was our downtown Milwaukee day. Dick had to go downtown, so he ... read more

Here I am, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, sipping on some wine, procrastinating from lesson planning for student teaching, because my mind is wandering to my little upcoming adventure. Thus, I thought this might be a good time to begin my blog about my internship in Australia. February 14th, I was motivated to turn in my application for an internship through AustraLearn, and a week and half ago I was officially accepted for an internship at a community school in the inner-city of Sydney. Since then, with the amazing help of June, my step-grandmother, I have finalized my flight-itineraries for this Oceania Adventure. On May 24th, my sister Michelle and I will begin this adventure together exploring the North and South Islands of New Zealand. We have been preparing by obtaining our International driver's licenses, finding hostels, ... read more

Yes, back to freezing weather, snow still on the ground (although thankfully, the 14 inches that fell here the week before last has melted), toppled shelf in the garage (Dan was here and cleaned up the gas spill, thankfully), but house otherwise intact, plants thriving thanks to the careful attention of Carly Madry and Dan. Thanks also to Dan for leaving the house immaculate after more than a week here over spring break. What I want to know is, everywhere else we have been, the cherry trees, plum trees, peach trees, and magnolias have all begun to bloom within two days of our arrival. That happened in Shanghai, Xi'an, Beijing, and even in California. So why aren't our crabapple trees even budding yet? Last day in Beijing we went to Temple of Heaven Park, photographed the ... read more

Hey everyone! Z and I touched down in Chicago last night around 8 o'clock. It was great to see her parents when we got out of customs and they drove us back to her house. I then headed back up to Milwaukee where I am writing from this minute! All in all, our trip was a success and we are very excited to head back to Qbik. This blog includes many pictures from Zuzu's camera that we did not have a chance to upload earlier in the trip. Enjoy! I will be creating another blog when I return to Qbik April 10, so stay tuned! Then, when Z comes back over (hopefully in August!), we will update this blog again. Happy Easter! Laura... read more

Test drive Sitting at home at the end of one more day trying to get ready. I bought a little moleskin notebookwith the intent of keeping handwritten notes, but we'll see how that works. Equally uncertain is whether I or Lynn will keep up a journal like this online. One of the other things we did today was go to the bookstore to stock upon books for the trip, and whatever spare time we have is most likely going to be spent reading quietly--our favorite thing to do with spare time. Anyway, if this is not kept up, or just drivel, we won't give out the link and burden you with the obligation of reading it. TTFN.... read more

I am leaving for Costa Rica in a few hours. Last night I was thinking how I have been presented with these opportunities and these tools to survive and prevail through my life; not only this endeavor to Costa Rica but the return of my cousin Ashley from her semester in Spain. I have no choice but to believe these happenings are more than mere coincidences due to such precise timing and the lasting peace running through me they have both instilled. So, I am drinking my coffee and taking comfort in the absence of anxiety knowing that I am right on track and steady once more. Here’s to life learning, soul searching, adventure seeking, and artistic endeavor. ... read more

I am back! Home in Milwaukee. It actually felt so odd yesterday arriving in Chicago. I suppose it is a mild case of culture shock. I was gone 7 weeks, so that is close to 2 months and it did not feel like winter or Christmas at all. It felt odd to see a Starbucks again...and then I saw Vitamin Waters...oh yeah! I forgot they existed and I always love Vitamin Waters! The Christmas songs were playing, O'Hare hectic but decorated for the holidays and the Bears on the television in the bar...oh yeah, it's football season. The snow is beautiful and with Christmas coming...what a fun time to be back! I have ended part one of my world travels and it feels great to have a break back at home. Yes...this is only the beginning. ... read more

It has been a while since I've posted any blogs and it was a busy summer of travel, so I've got some catching up to do. Last April, Grace and I took a weekend trip to Milwaukee to check out the Milwaukee Musuem of Art, a daytrip to Madison and to see a baseball game at Miller Park. ... read more
