Another good day today! While Jerome practiced and met another friend for lunch, I went with Chie to Navy Pier! At Navy Pier, we had lunch at the famous Billy Goat Tavern. I had a "cheeseborger" and chips. We then toured the nation's only stained glass museum, which was pretty neat to look at. There were many varieties of glass from all ages. We then rode the ferris wheel and took a bus to the beach. Though I did not have my swimsuit, I took my shoes off and walked arounds the shore of Lake Michigan. The water was freezing cold, but there were a few brave swimmers out there having fun. There were a lot of people on the beach playing volleyball and other games. We then took the bus back to Chie's apartment, where ... read more

Well I was supposed to leave at like 7:30am or something and arrive in downtown Milwaukee at 10. That didn't happen. I went to International Mister Leather the night before and woke up at 9:30. Immediately after a new train ticket was booked and I would arrive in Milwaukee around noon. I took the Amtrak which ended up being completely reasonable to get there. However, there were a lot of people on the train. Like, a lot. Milwaukee The weather could not be nicer in Milwaukee. It is sunny an beautiful here. I am starving. I end up going to Capriotti's Sandwich Shop. It looks like a mom and pop kind of place but apparently it's a franchise. I ask whether I should get the veggie sub or the veggie cheeseburger. The owner says more people ... read more

Obviously I got less excited about chronicling the planning steps of this trip, but I thought I'd say a little something now. I hate volcanoes. They really really really suck. As of right now, flights along the same path with the same timing as ours are still leaving from the east coast to Rome. Just a couple more days, Rome needs to hang in & not get ashed out. I don't care if we get stuck in Europe once we're there. I'm totally fine with that. Things are optimistic enough now that I can get excited, start packing, really believe that we're going. If anything changes for the worse now, we'll be at the end of a long, long line of passengers affected, and even if we could get to Europe, there's no telling when it ... read more

Heaven 1, Amtrak 0, but is it a competition, really? I’m writing this blog awaiting my complementary Sprite on a North West Airlines flight from Milwaukee to Minneapolis, and then my brother and I are going to continue on to Helena, Montana. Where we will… I’ll get to that part. That’s not the story, though. The story is everything that led up to this point. Wednesday, January 6, 2010 The morning after the Iowa Hawkeyes won their bowl game, I got an email to give dad a call (I don’t have my phone, but that’s another story- hm… maybe a new years resolution is in the works). I phoned my dad and, fighting his emotions, said, “grandma didn’t make the night. We all gathered in her room to watch the game, she was asleep most of ... read more

One more check off the list, countless more to go. Made our reservation today for the Mecenate Palace Hotel through Orbitz. I honestly believe it's the best possible deal....cost, location, reviews. I think we'll be very happy with it. Airfair is still a pain in the butt....allowing for time to disembark the ship on the last day, we can't likely fly out until afternoon. NO flights make it out of Europe without a 12 hour or more layover when leaving that late. Boo. So still exploring that portion of things. I have some rough ideas on tour itineraries for Rome. Unfortunately lots of neat tours aren't offered during the 2 days we have to sight see. Started communicating with fellow cruisers on the Cruise Critic message boards. Many of them are putting together their own more ... read more

Planning. My addiction and the bane of my existence. I'm knee-deep in various tour websites. I've got three firefox windows open, and at least 7 tabs in each. I've got a word document open for taking notes. I feel like I'm drowning in dates, times, euros, dollars... This really isn't relaxing, but I gain some pleasure from it anyway. When I'm done I'll be confident I've arranged the best little whirlwind Roman stint there ever could be. For us, anyway. On the cruise end of things....there's really not much. We were booked on the 11th of this month and the deposit has been made. I've already switched dining preferences once. 915 is just too dang late. As sailing date gets closer and shore excursions become available, I'm sure I'll explode. Contemplating options like I am now ... read more

Things have gotten quite a bit better since my last post. After being the middle man for the New York ticketing agency, the Chicago Korean consulate, my Korean recruiting agency, my future Korean school, and Korean immigration, the Korean consulate finally took matters into their own hands and contacted the supervisor of my recruitment agency and immigration and straightened everything out. I pick up my visa Thursday! Hopefully I'll be leaving Friday (fingers crossed). Also, for the last month and a half I've been in contact with another American who was hired along with me, and she arrived in Korea on Monday and, so far, has nothing but good things to say about it. I'm getting excited! ... read more

Hey guys. I just thought that I'd update everybody on what's going on up to this point. Two days ago I got an e-mail which contained my e-ticket information, great news. It has me leaving this monday (the 24th), and it is a big one. I start out in milwaukee, fly up to Minnesota, west to Tokyo, then north west to Seoul. Ugh! What a long day of flying. So, yesterday (19th) I drove down to Chicago to finish my work-visa progress at the Korean Consulate. I waited in a big line with all my information and paperwork: Visa Confirmation number, filled out Visa application, filled out Consul interview checklist, Passport, copy of my passport information page, 2X2 passport size photo, $45.00, and copy of the visa information page that my school in Korea e-mailed to ... read more

Hey guys! It's my last day at Signature! No more 3rd shift! WOO HOO! Just keeping everyone informed that I'm going to Chicago next Wednesday to pick up my work visa at the Korean consulate, and I should be leaving soon after that. Also, I'm writing this blog to see if my subscribers are recieving e-mail notifications, because I hear that updates are being sent to people's junk mail. So, im asking all of you who are reading this right now to send me an e-mail to let me know if they got the notification alright or if I should be worried. My e-mail is hellrung1@hotmail.com. Thanks for reading guys. I hope all of you stay in touch while I'm gone.... read more
