We are on our way to LaCrosse, WI, an easy day of driving. We stopped at Lake Kegonsa State Park for an hour walk. The lake was beautiful with adult size swings under trees. A gorgeous day. Our Holiday Inn is located across the street from Mississippi River Park In Lacrosse. The hotel is full of Harley riders, a friendly bunch. We had gourmet pizza at Kate's and ice cream at The Pearl, a famous old fashioned parlour. Rolling out to Sioux Falls, SD, taking a meander through Minnesota, driving scenic byways.... read more

We drove up the Wisconsin (eastern) side of the Mississippi River, following the Great River Road. The Great River Road is a collection of state and local roads that follow the Mississippi River through the United States and is more of a tourist or historic pathway than anything else. (In the picture you can see that this stretch is also designated one of America's Byways, presumably for its scenic significance.) We stopped intermittently to snap photos and admire the view. There is a terrific overlook in La Crosse, Wisconsin and we would have spent more time admiring the scenery if it hadn't been so cold. (At least we had no more precipitation!) Miles traveled today: 574 After a leisurely start from our hotel, we packed into the car with no plan other than to get in as many miles as possible. The heat, sun, and pure boredom made us take a midafternoon detour into a little town called La Crosse, Wisconsin. We didn’t expect much beyond a look out called Grandad Bluff found on Trip Advisor. When we tried to drive up to the Bluff, we found the road blocked. Not willing to give up, I changed into my running clothes and jogged the remaining mile and half up to the bluff, a total climb of about 600 feet.
