Went into Washington DC today to do an open top bus tour with Rene O'Brien Harlow and Bill Harlow (Big Bus Tour of Washington D.C.) An impressive array of museums, monuments and galleries The Washingtonians have put their 'awl and their all' toward embedding their constitutional pride into the landscape. Towering majestic monuments and impressive museum collections testify to the founding (fathers' you will note) principles There is a gob smacking array of monumental and well kept symbols of American freedoms. One of our tour guides Fowzia (pseudonym) was full of insights and amusing anecdotes As an American born Muslim - she was notably sensitive to landmarks of ethnic significance - keen to point out the broken Swastika of the Holocaust Museum, highlighting the newer African American Museum and its popularity, the symbolism of the American ... read more

Planning a long trip is really fun. It provides a comforting sense of purpose and commitment. I study maps, design routes, and steep myself in the culture of the land. Potential disasters are foreseen, acts of God set aside, and contingency plans developed, which lead to the best part of the preparation process -- buying more equipment ! Canada, in its benevolent wisdom, provides travelers on this road with free satellite phones -- picked up at one end, and dropped off at the other, on the honor system. A key feature is convincing Beth that the project is indeed worthwhile. She has always been very supportive, no matter the destination. I think she understands how important these forays are to me. An issue with this trip has been: "where is it you say you are going ... read more

We have spent the last week in South and North Carolina waters, and I believe, these are some of the nicest waters for cruising. Not that the water is actually all that “nice”; it still carries an “ice tea” hue, and I am afraid if I jump in I will come out looking like a wet tea bag… But everything else about this area is, well, nice! The scenery, the ease of travel, the people, the towns, yup, you guessed it, all nice. After days of being on the boat, we came to the town of Southport, South Carolina. We had heard from some boater friends, that there was a restaurant there called The Provision Company that would allow you to dock for free overnight if you ate at their establishment. I called the day before, ... read more

After getting my apartment all packed up and off to storage, we headed out for our first stop on the trip, Roanoke, VA. Roanoke was a stop based upon convenience and distance more than what there is to "say and do" in town. That said, Roanoke has a special small town vibe in the downtown area. We walked through some of the streets downtown enjoying the small fun stores, then headed to dinner at Jack Brown's Beer and Burgers. With specialty burgers named after characters like Danny Laruso and Greg Brady, as well as classic artists like Elvis, we knew we were up for an experience. My dad tried the Jalapeno Popper with cream cheese and pickled jalapenos and I had the Greg Brady with macaroni and cheese, American and cheddar blend cheese and BBQ potato ... read more

Geo: 38.3009, -77.4591The last month has been a busy one. I started on a new health journey and so far so good, going after my goals one day at a time. Since Baltimore I have stayed local over the last few weeks, I helped my boyfriend and his roommate move houses, watched so many movies at the cinema that I feel like I am a local over there and went out of town as Eduardo decided to move an hour away from me. I experienced my first Super Bowl with my host family and they go as crazy food and drinks wise as the South Africans do for the rugby. I have also made new friends with German girls and I get to spend time with them in the week which is nice. The weather was ... read more

Virginia is for lovers. So goes their state motto. And so captures the essence for one of my most magical friendships. Last weekend, my very best good friend Felicia took me down to Shenandoah Valley from Washington, D.C. and we had the opportunity to hike along one of my most beloved trails in America - the Appalachian Trail. I felt like we were living Bill Bryson's and Stephen Katz's adventure in the hilarious classic, A Walk in the Woods. Only we had company with our other best good friend, dog. Let me state right here and right now that it has been my dream for ages to hike along the AT in Virginia. Shenandoah is dubbed one of the most beautiful parks in the United States, and with good reason: I was absolutely astounded at how ... read more
