Hello, loyal readers. I know I owe you an ending to Quest for The Stamp, and I promise I will give it to you by the end of this trip. I have a lot of unposted fun pictures I need to share from that trip, and a trip wrap up. For the past few years, the camping girlies have been meeting at Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay Preserve, Gloucester, VA, for a week of eating and sightseeing. This year, Kathy and Ginnie are on their own trip, kind of like a Pacific Ocean or bust trip. They left the east coast mid August, traveling in Ginnie’s RV, towing her car, 2 ladies, 3 dogs, and, from Kathy’s blog, they are having a wonderful time. They are at the mouth of the Columbia River now, and plan on ... read more

Suzanne here... Our Tennessee detour had brought us near the border of North Carolina, making it a logical place to stay for a couple of nights on our way back up to Virginia. We knew nothing about North Carolina to be honest, but some hasty research suggested that the mountainous Blue Ridge Parkway area was worth a stop. We found a likely looking campsite in Linville and decided to head there. On the way we stopped at the town of Asheville for lunch, at Tastee Diner (we do love a good old-fashioned American diner) where we had some excellent burgers. We finally pulled into the campsite at about 5pm, chose our pitch, got the tent up, and enjoyed showers. I mean, we really enjoyed them. They were our first showers for three days. We'd chosen the ... read more

On 17 August Mi Hyon and I returned to Langley AFB to formally retire from my second career working for the US Air Force. The first time I retired from active duty and this time around from Civilian Service, surely the last time I will retire. My friends from Air Combat Command provided me a truly memorable send off, for which Mi Hyon and I are eternally grateful. We stayed at Langley AFB FamCamp until we left for New England on 1 September for a two month stay.... read more

Since we arrived at the hotel late from our Cass Scenic Railroad train ride yesterday, we were both tired when we awoke this morning. We had originally planned on staying last night back in Luray and resuming our ride down Skyline Drive where we left off, but the late ending of the train ride had us stay in Harrisonburg some 40 miles away. So our first hour this morning was spent just getting back to Luray to pick up where we left off. It did give us the opportunity for that one last ride up and over the mountain on US-211E. It's about 400 miles from Luray to Asheville, NC on what starts out as Skyline Drive while it's in Shenandoah National Park and turns into Blue Ridge Parkway when it leaves. We decided to split ... read more

Today we get to ride a train. Not just any train, but an actual steam locomotive! I've always loved trains, ever since I was a child, and today we are visiting the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV. The train doesn't leave until 11:45, and it's about 2 hours away, so we didn't have any reason to rush this morning. It rained last night, and there was a forecast of rain later in the afternoon, so Jody and I decided to wear our rainsuits this morning, just in case. So after a quick breakfast in the hotel, we loaded up the bike and headed back across the mountains. We started our journey by heading back on US-33E which was such a great motorcycle ride yesterday. The roads were still a little wet from last night's rain, ... read more

Today is cave day! We're staying in Luray, so naturally we will be visiting Luray Caverns. There are a couple of other caves in the area, so today will be the day of caves. Since Luray Caverns is our first stop and is only about a mile up the road and doesn't open until 9:00, we were able to take our time about breakfast. Last night we walked into town and picked up a box from the post office, so this morning when the post office opened at 8:30, we walked into town again with what we hope to be the last box of t-shirts to send home. Then we hopped on the bike and headed over to Luray Caverns. Luray Caverns has expanded over the years from just a show cave, to a complex. It ... read more

Today we bid the North a fond farewell and officially return to the South. We're have about 2 weeks left to go on this trip and we are starting to feel like we are in the home stretch. After a quick breakfast at the hotel, we headed back north and west out of Delaware on into Maryland. We stayed far enough north to just skirt around northern Baltimore. I have been to Baltimore several times, and while I really like the downtown area, it's not really great for motorcycles. So we will save Baltimore for some other time. Most of the roads out of Delaware and through Maryland were about the same. We mostly followed Liberty Heights Ave/ MD-26 from Baltimore to Frederick. Mostly it was suburban secondary roads with lots of fast food, gas stations, ... read more

Well, we are off! A little later than anticipated but really we are on VACATION so who cares about time! We got on the road a little after 10 and headed to Binghamton to stop by Brad’s parents before heading south. The first day covered A LOT of miles…544, in fact. Our first sight seeing venture was not until almost the end of those miles while driving down Skyline Drive at Shenandoah National Park. WOW. There are about 70 vistas and they are pretty impressive. Brad was excited to see some wildlife, too. We did not take the entire drive because of time. But we are hoping to make an entire trip out of the park at some point in the future when we are able to hike some of the trails. OK, now is when ... read more

Got up with plenty of time. Went to The Buttery for a nice leisurely breakfast. Since it was a Thursday (not Saturday and end of exams, like last week), there were a number of conference-attendees there, very different crowd. Bus to airport, no problem (sounding like pros with the Dublin transport?--NO!). Picked up luggage. Then the fun began. The 'automated' check in stations were interesting, as they had been on our way to IOM. The first one we chose had a broken printer, I was told part way through. Moved to another. Somehow, we got our passports scanned, boarding passes printed, and luggage weighed and tags printed and (thanks, Mike) attached correctly. Then, you put them on the conveyor belt that weighs them again (so, no sneaking more skeins of yarn in at the last minute) ... read more

Tuesday 13th Went cattle class to Norfolk VA from Springfield VA on the Greyhound, as Amtrak cancelled my train The journey to cousins was a mission I tell you - I DO NOT recommend Greyhound - but I endured - it is an adventure after all . . Just not to be repeated any time soon or ever again! The service was overbooked so 2 coaches were needed. Over 1 and a half hours later the second one arrived whilst they hunted for another driver - who turned out not to exactly know his way. Anyway - upside was we got onto a cleaner coach with more space - some comfort then - and arrived seriously late The Greyhound staff at Richmond were quite rude - especially on the Info Desk ... read more
