Time to start chronicling the trip. Dan has bought his 2009 KLR and I am probably going to get a 2005 KLR later this week. We chose the kawasaki KLR 650 as the ideal bikes for the trip because of their dual sport nature, affordability and simplicity for repair. We are leaving Oakton, VA on the morning of August 3rd and heading North by NorthWest on our way to Alaska. We will be passing through Detroit, Chicago, Green Bay and Minneapolis on our way to Canada. We will head West from Winnipeg, through Regina and Calgary to Banff. We will then head north through Whitehorse to Alaska. We will head to Anchorage before exploring Denali. We will then head up to Fairbanks before heading back south to the NorthWest of the U.S.A. From here we will ... read more

The excitement - I can feel it now. What was for months nothing more than a cool idea and a few interesting lines of conversation to toss at friends over drinks is now something rather more. It's really dawning on me that in less than 3 days time, we'll be living out of two and a half backpacks, while throwing ourselves halfway around the world. The more rooted part of me wants to grab my own neck and shake it like a crazy man, and scream "what the hell are we getting ourselves into??". The crazy part of me wants to jump up and down and yell "Woohoo!!!" I think the crazy part is winning. -Derek (and only Derek for the moment; Sandra doesn't have time for these petty considerations right now - she's trying ... read more

hey! i set up this site so my family and friends can read what i'm up to while i'm in africa for the next three months. instead of emailing or calling everyone to tell them how i'm doing, i figured it would be easier to just post my stuff. i'm going to try and post my pictures on facebook instead of here (it's easier) but don't worry mom and dad, mikey can show you how save them to the computer! ;) here is a guideline itinerary. the only set-in-stone dates are the flights and i'm not even sure if i'm correct on them at the moment (i need to check my tickets again) i'll be sure to post if anything changes! i'm flying into lisbon, portugal on may 26 then taking a bus to spain and ... read more

G'day and greetings. I am in the process of planning a trip to Ireland, so there is not a whole lot to talk about yet; just a guy with a laptop and a pile of travel books. Although Sandra (my wife) is travelling to India for work in a few weeks. That might be quite exciting. Pity I'm not going, though.... read more

I am now back in Fairfax awaiting my afternoon flight to BA. I'm feeling well. Upbeat, in fact. I think the notes that I made on the train from Williamsburg last night puts it plainly. ...."Now that I write these words here on this train to the future, I feel the chills of excitement coursing through my spine. I think my brain and body are realizing that the will to survive, no the drive to conquer, is still alive within my breast. "The groggy old man that is my soul is finally tasting his coffee. ADVENTURE. Big bold letters with a period. An important statement. There is no need for exclamation points, this just is. "No more worry, not tonite. Only the plans and processes. The entire brain is engaged; logically deciding the how and emotionally ... read more

Greetings family & friends. If you reading this journal then consider yourselves the chosen few to share in my journey to the Far East. This first entry is a test run to see exactly how travelblog works. You see, I am still sitting in my room in Northern Virginia...I haven't left...yet. Brent and I fly out of Dulles Friday at noon. We land in Narita Tokyo Saturday at 3 or so. We'll drop our bags at the camp director's house. Catch some sleep. Wake up Sunday and catch the rail to Kyoto, Japan. I am giving this travelblog a try to share with all you what I see, hear, & do while I am in Japan. I am going to try an update and send an entry out once a week. All of you are going ... read more
