Day 32: Ely, NV to Glendale, UT Another fairly long day today, though not as long as yesterday. We found that US 50 across Nevada was not nearly as desolate and lonely as UT 21! About the only traffic we saw were several Fire/Ambulance/Sheriff Deputies on a run just west of Minersville, UT. Don't think we ever got lower than about 5200 FT in elevation all day. We crossed several passes over 6000 ft and a couple over 7000 ft, but, the highest we drove was 8500 FT in Great Basin NP on Mt. Wheeler which is over 13,000 ft at it's peak. We left Ely, NV, driving east to Great Basin National Park. The visitor center is at Baker, but 4 miles up the road is the visitor center for Lehman Caves, which used to be a National Monument, but is now included in Great Basin Natl Park. At the Lehman Caves visitor center we left Bob and Gena’s rig and our camper and drove up the Wheeler Peak Road in our van. The road was pretty steep and winding, but the views were magnificent. The valley below and the mountains all around were colorful and amazing to see. After picking up the campers we continued on into Utah, now on Hwy 21. This road could have qualified as the loneliest road; I don’t think we saw half a dozen other vehicles in more than 70 miles. As ... read more
