Day 32: Ely, NV to Glendale, UT
Another fairly long day today, though not as long as yesterday. We found that US 50 across Nevada was not nearly as desolate and lonely as UT 21! About the only traffic we saw were several Fire/Ambulance/Sheriff Deputies on a run just west of Minersville, UT. Don't think we ever got lower than about 5200 FT in elevation all day. We crossed several passes over 6000 ft and a couple over 7000 ft, but, the highest we drove was 8500 FT in Great Basin NP on Mt. Wheeler which is over 13,000 ft at it's peak. What a great view of the valley to the north, east and south from that viewpoint. The only wild life we saw were a few Prong horn Antilope, several hawks, and, we think, one gold eagle - - couldn't get a photo of any of the birds. With such a long day today and a short one tomorrow, we decided to bypass Cedar Breaks NM today and run up there in the morning before heading down to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. That means some back tracking, but, more even days. I had forgotten how
pretty the scenery is on US 89 just to the west of Bryce NP - - got to see a few hoodoos like the ones in the park proper. Despite daytime temps in the 90s, it cools down considerably as soon as the sun dips below the horizon.
