Being in Texas birding is hot and dusty work, but someone has to do it. We return each day from our adventures thirsty and hot and dusty. And we may look like a chicken when we return, as we are eating chicken so often. We cook breakfast here at the studio, make chicken salads to eat out for lunches, and then eat chicken back here – although yesterday we ate outside next to a lovely little lake. This part if Texas is flat and very arable. We saw dozens of tractors out plowing, and many different watering systems of the deeply furrowed fields. Everywhere are towers of cement about 12’ tall holding the mechanisms for regulating the flow of water. Drive west from here we were close to the Rio Grande and saw long portions of ... read more

We decided on April 1st, 2020 to dedicate lots of time to birding - it seemed a good use of being outdoors. We picked up about 35 new species in Florida on vacation over Christmas, and came here with 227 species on the list. Yesterday we stopped at a city park in Harlingen - where the airport was - and picked up some of the more spectacular ones Plain Chacalaca - a really funny bird that reminds us of a mix between crazy chickens and roadrunner. A great kiskadee Altamira oriole and - although we've seen these before in Florida - over 20 black-bellied whistling ducks - they are so funny sitting high up on pole and along wires Golden-fronted woodpecker - so similar to our red-bellied woodpeckers and dozens and dozens of red-crowned parrots. They ... read more

Taking a trip ‘out west’ to see the great state of Texas had been on my wish list for some time, but visiting there had always been overlooked in favor of an international destination until April, 2019 when the time seemed right to see the “Lone Star” state. Planning an itinerary for places and sites we both were interested in seeing was actually pretty easy. Texas is the 2nd largest state in the nation covering almost 270,000 square miles of territory, and just mentioning its name conjures up images of its legendary geographical attributes and independent-minded people. It is a state blessed with a variety of geographical features, and it is famous as the setting of more than a few, very profound moments in American history. With only a week to visit, we focused on places ... read more

Two days before the Polar front ice storm, our weather stations warned us about all time record temperature lows and ice storm that could knock out our electric power for days. (The Texas electrical power grid is not reliable during temperature extremes.) I purchased ten gallons of non-ethanol gasoline for my portable generator for power. I purchased disposable propane bottles for my cook stove and my space heaters. I had plenty of food and water, and was ready to hunker down and stay at home. (What could possibly go wrong?) Day one (Feb. 15): I first got sleet then snow. I lost power in evening and covered up for the night. Day two (Feb 16): I woke to find ice covering my planted conifers damaging them. It warmed up to about 35 degrees F (turning snow ... read more

I received a notice on local weather man that we might get some snow; with thousands of homes West of Tyler, Texas that lost power. This was a rare snow event for my neck of the woods in Nacogdoches County. This was about two degrees C, above the freezing point of water. It was fun having my winter wonderland with photo opps. The snow came down wet and heavy, sticking like glue to my conifer trees. Later I had fun shooting night pics of the snow. Then I saw over fifty of my planted conifers bent over touching the ground with their tops. I acted by giving my affected trees a good shake to free them from the weight, and they rose up again. I only lost one tree that snapped from the snow. This would ... read more

I departed from Nacogdoches County for a two hour drive to Cedar Creek Dragway. (I made a stop on the way in Athens, Texas to shoot the Henderson County Courthouse.) I arrived at the dragway at 12100 Kaufman County Road 2139. (903-880-3099) I paid the $20 admission fee and I was ready to scoot. (The tract opened for racing at 2 PM; with matched big-boy vehicles reserved at 4 PM.) The track manager was very helpful to give me racing instructions and safety requirements. This is an official 1/8 mile drag racing tract. This racing was difficult for me at first cuz my front tires had to block out the two sensors that were about ten inches apart. That activated the "Christmas tree" with the green light and I had only a few seconds before my ... read more

The local ABC network from Tyler, Texas gives us news on astrologic events and information when the International Space Station will pass over Tyler. The station generally travels from the NW to the SE. Since Tyler is about 70 miles from Nacogdoches, it arrives about two minutes later to reach my homestead in Nacogdoches County. Cuz of the solar panels on the station, it appears as a bright white light, and is easy to see on a clear night as it cruises overhead. I enjoy watching the space station crossing over my yard. The station crosses the sky in a straight line. In my photos I shoot three second exposures without a tripod so I get interesting results. completed... read more

We had to cancel trips to Key West and Chautauqua because of the pandemic and we were going stir crazy. So we decided that a road trip was in order and could be done safely. We hadn't seen my son who lives in Denver in a while so that became our destination from Houston. There were many sites along the way that I've been wanting to go to so became my plan for an itinerary. I thought driving no more than five hours in a day would give us time to do a little sight seeing before settling into a hotel each day. We departed on August 24th and returned home on September 1st. First stop, Fredericksburg, Texas. We love Fredericksburg and we had also canceled a trip to go to their annual Hill Country Film ... read more

This entry will be different from most that came before it. One of the things that sets this road trip off from the others is that it was not a solo road trip. Jack and I had planned this trip for at least a month, and it would be his only trip for the season. Since it was a Big-12 team, we've begun to think of this as our annual road trip. Last year, we went to see West Virginia, and this year it was Texas. Of course, I did not want to go just to see Texas; the visiting team for this weekend's match up was my alma mater, TCU. Last year, I went to see them play at Oklahoma, and we knew from the outset that it was hopeless to expect TCU to win. ... read more

The four corners states are New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. Unfortunately my adventure vacation starts and ends with a two day drive across Texas. This started with good preparation for weeks in Nacogdoches, Texas. My basic trip has major overlap to my vacation in 2017 that I contributed to this site in 2018. Since that last travel I got older and more disabled so planning was essential for my survival. I wish I had a satellite phone cuz where I was going mostly had no cell phone reception; and where I camped in the back-country I could not walk out to get help. This was a very enjoyable spiritual experience as I could be with Mother Nature and see extinct volcanism, powers of erosion, and beautiful trees that can not live in East Texas. As ... read more
