Last December, 2019, I had to push the issue to get a free map of the Texas State Railroad at the Palestine RR depot. Then I asked the location of the North Pole (Texas); and they answered that the North Pole location was a carefully guarded secret. I took that as a challenge for me! From Rusk, Texas I drove West on US Hwy 84 to the Neches River leaving Cherokee County into Anderson County. I took the first County Road (West of the Neches River) South a short distance to the Texas State Railroad by Fields Chapel...by mile marker 17. From the Texas State Railroad map I found the North Pole by the two familiar spur tracks at mile 17.5; making my Westbound walk a half mile for each direction. I took a canteen full ... read more

This is the Texas State Railroad, Christmas edition on December 7, 2019. This railroad operates year round with full time employees; except in December where it is the Polar Express using temporary employees (except engineers and brakemen) that know little about the railroad. Since this is geared for children they stop at the "North Pole" to see Santa and elves singing and dancing. Then Santa enters the train to visit the children and give them the generous gift of a cookie. Note: The Texas State Railroad started construction in 1883 in Rusk and was completed to Palestine in 1909. The railroad connected the existing Cotton Belt Railroad in Rusk with the IGN Railroad in Palestine. The Texas State Railroad was sold to Iowa Pacific Holdings in 2012, making the railroad private...no longer owned by the State ... read more

After a brief hotel breakfast in Jacksonville, Texas, we rode to Rusk, to get aboard the train to Palestine. This is not a regular scheduled ride for people to travel between the two cities, but a scenic tour of the Piney Woods of East Texas. During Dogwood blooming season, or changing of the leaves, it would be more scenic, but today, everything was gray, overcast, but a very nice trip without the potential postcard views. In 1970, the Rusk depot was built to resemble a 1920's style depot. In the late 1800's, the Texas Prison System built a short run of track, which was the start of the current Texas State Railroad track, to access the hardwood timber, which was used to make charcoal for the prison iron smelting operation. They made the iron for the ... read more

We began the day with a 3 mile walk/run on the LaNana Creek trail, which amazingly, runs along LaNana Creek. After breakfast at the Olde Towne General Store, we headed back to the hotel to shower, pack and head for Palestine. We had not yet realized it but we had already enjoyed the best part of the day. After we got our bags packed and were ready to load the car, I went to the elevator to go downstairs to get the luggage cart. To make a long story short (too late!), it turns out the elevator was down for maintenance. So Kay and I had to lug our bags down 5 flights of stairs. We got some help from an employee of the hotel and we were grateful. We got to Palestine and found out ... read more

There is not a lot we would drive to Palestine, Texas for as the downtown area is , like many other small towns, about dried up. A few antique stores and a sandwich shop, otherwise not much else. Over the hill about a block away we saw some interesting buildings that looked as though this was a touristy area. Most were closed the day we were they. There is a very nice looking government building on a large hill so we drove to the area. Appears to be the first court house in town. Very majestic structure. Looked as though some repairs were being made and there was a new government building about two blocks away. We did find one interesting activity in Palestine. It is one end of the town on US Hwy 84E is ... read more
