The local ABC network from Tyler, Texas gives us news on astrologic events and information when the International Space Station will pass over Tyler. The station generally travels from the NW to the SE. Since Tyler is about 70 miles from Nacogdoches, it arrives about two minutes later to reach my homestead in Nacogdoches County. Cuz of the solar panels on the station, it appears as a bright white light, and is easy to see on a clear night as it cruises overhead. I enjoy watching the space station crossing over my yard. The station crosses the sky in a straight line. In my photos I shoot three second exposures without a tripod so I get interesting results. completed... read more

The four corners states are New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. Unfortunately my adventure vacation starts and ends with a two day drive across Texas. This started with good preparation for weeks in Nacogdoches, Texas. My basic trip has major overlap to my vacation in 2017 that I contributed to this site in 2018. Since that last travel I got older and more disabled so planning was essential for my survival. I wish I had a satellite phone cuz where I was going mostly had no cell phone reception; and where I camped in the back-country I could not walk out to get help. This was a very enjoyable spiritual experience as I could be with Mother Nature and see extinct volcanism, powers of erosion, and beautiful trees that can not live in East Texas. As ... read more

This is the start of my August 15, 2020 travel to Southern Cherokee County. I needed gasoline so I stopped at my favorite station on the North side of Nacogdoches to fill up Old Blue. Driving South on Loop 224 I was surprised to find our Trade Days Flea Market open and circled around to get mangos and other tropical fruits from my favorite vendor. He noticed that I had a hard time walking, so he had his assistant carry my purchase back to my truck. Since I was planning to tour Southern Cherokee County, I drove West on Texas Hwy 225 and stopped at the Lake Nacogdoches Scenic Overlook by the dam. Driving Westbound I made a stop at what the locals call the "suicide turn" (where horrible auto wrecks happen) as TX 225 turns ... read more

According to TSHA (Texas State Historical Association) Kingtown was named for land developer Alton King who purchased fifty acres on (the North side) the Angelina River in 1943. A residential community was established when King opened a camping area in 1943. In the 1950s he was selling lots for homes. When they damned up the Angelina River creating the Sam Rayburn Reservoir (around 1960) that attracted many new residents and increased the property values. I was driving down Texas FM 226 Southbound and saw a sign for Kingtown. I turned West on Nacogdoches County road 552, following the signs for the Kingtown Landing Liquor Store, passing by a private deer hunting lease on the North side of the county road. note: These free county road maps in East Texas are generally accurate, but sometimes do not ... read more

Well, the clutch burnt out on Old Blue. The cost of repairs far exceeds the cash value of Blue. It is not RIP yet. Old Blue served me well for 200,000 miles. That includes over 2,000 miles of off-road in the wilderness (back-country) trails of the desert and mountains of Western USA. This includes three trips down the trail of Diamond Creek to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (by way of the Native American Reservation at Peach Springs, Arizona), where I made camp by the Colorado River. We made a good team of man and machine to beat the odds and pass many survival tests on very bad trails where I could not walk out to civilization for help. It is possible that Old Blue could be a Phoenix and rise from her ashes to ... read more

Yesterday watching ABC local news (KLTV), the weatherman (Mark Skirto) told us that the Space Station would be seen at 8:58 over Tyler, Texas for six minutes. (Cuz of my large trees I had maybe thirty seconds to shoot.) That would be about three minutes different than in my neck of the woods in Nacogdoches County. I had my camera and tripod ready (and a rum drink) for the fly-over. My shots were three second exposures. Sorry, you have to look hard to see the short white lines. I sent these pics to KLTV and email was bounced back to me as I had to be a member for them to see my email. I found a pick I shot last year of the Space Station that was overhead about 9:47 PM. It was darker then ... read more

Last week I visited Millard's Crossing Historic Village on North Street just North of the North Loop 224 at 6020 North Street in Nacogdoches. They were closed with their gate open so I stopped there only seeing the landscapers working there to keep the grounds looking nice. Millard's Crossing Historic Village was a 37 acre site established by Lera Millard Tomas starting about in 1966 on family land where Lera Millard grew up. Lera Millard Thomas restored some old buildings (some from the 1850s) there; then had other buildings relocated there and had them restored, with old artifacts added also. In April 2017 my only child Molly got married there at the old church. At that time the Millard's Crossing office was what I called the older office. The Nacogdoches North side flea market at the ... read more

A few months ago most people did not know what a pandemic was, or how deadly it could become. Just common sense told me that the Corona virus could become a global pandemic with many sick and many would perish. A pandemic is an disease epidemic with a rapid spread that develops over a wide geologic area that affects a very high proportion of the population. Pandemics can and have spread world wide. Few facts are understood about Covid-19, but this is my best understanding of the potential plague hazards. I think that Covid-19 can not last long floating free in air. The primary hazard is from infected persons coughing and sneezing virus infected mucus droplets, inhaled or from touching contaminated surfaces then touching their mouth or eyes. I think the Corona can infect somebody from ... read more

I was at the Sterne-Hoya House & Library talking with their historians; and they showed me a large parchment from 1962 about the Old Stagecoach Inn (aka Halfway Inn, aka Flournoy-Grandberry House). I purchased one of the parchments for about $3 USD. Since the Old Stagecoach Inn was nearby in my neck of the woods (in Nacogdoches County) I wanted to check it out. The next day had good winter weather and I fired up my truck Old Blue and headed out to see the inn. I drove Texas Hwy 21 East (aka El Camino Real, aka The Kings Highway, aka The Old San Antonio Road). I passed through the de-funked town of Melrose (city limits signs there long gone) about seven miles East of Nacogdoches. Then after a few miles I passed the community of ... read more

On Christmas Eve I attended a nice celebration at the home of the founder of the glass recycling "C&R Kutt Bottle" charity. We started with their "pot luck" dinner where everybody brings one food or drink to share. The food ranged from good to very good. (This is more personal, so no pics.) Then we'all went into the forest to sing Christmas carols by the large bonfire. For scale, the fire ring is two meters diameter, (and my home fire ring is only one meter diameter.) Everybody sat on chairs inside the large stacks of firewood ricks; about ten meters from the fire ring in all directions. We sang most of the night and some of us exchanged Christmas gifts. Finally we ran out of Christmas songs and it was time to go home. I got ... read more
