Chris is ready
Chris is ready to go camping. Let's go Grandpa. Camping with the Twins on Lake Livingston
We met mom and dad in Brenham, and picked up Chris and Ben Thursday night so we could load the truck and head out to Lake Livingston State Park Friday morning. With the threat of rain, we tried to plan options so we could avoid setting up or taking down the campsite in the rain.
We had everything ready Thursday night, and Friday morning we did get on the road about 10:15. Rain was a big threat, so we packed the truck so rain would not get clothes, food, etc. wet.
We got to the park, and checked in, surveyed the available campsites for safety (not on a hill with a slope to the water), near the potty and showers. As it turned out, the rain was not a major problem. While it did rain Friday night/Saturday morning, it wasn't a gully washer or toad choker, but more a heavy mist, light rain. No standing water, but it did get things wet if they weren't covered. That was the case for both Friday night and Saturday night/Sunday morning.
Sunday morning rain prediction and uncertainty was large, and since we
Ben - are you ready?
Let's go camping Grandpa. were going to be breaking camp, I was sure not wanting to tear down and pack up in the rain, or pack a wet and muddy tent and everything else. Since everything was under the pop up cover, things stayed dry, the tent was damp on top, but we were able to break camp and load up without wearing rain gear, and were loaded up and ready to roll about 10:30.
Both Chris and Ben were great campers. They played well, were amazed at all the little creatures (ants, rolly-pollies, birds, squirrels). They brought their bikes, but were playing on the bed of the truck, which was a boat, or other vessels as imagination provided, or just hanging out and asking questions about everything they saw. When I had the tent all flat, and folded, ready to roll up, Chris tells Ben, "He's going to roll it up now". I have no clue how he figured that out since this was his first time camping with us, and we didn't roll up anything to setup camp.
One of the extra added attractions that we noticed after we picked the camp site, registered with the park rangers, and unloaded

and ready to truck on and go camping. the truck to setup the tent, was that the lush green ground cover and some of the vine like things growing up the trees right behind and beside the tent. It looked a lot like ivy. The kind that makes you itch like crazy. (Leaves-of-three-let-it-be). We found out later, that picking a new camp site would not have resolved that issue. The place was full of it.
Keeping the kids (AND us) out of it was now JOB-ONE. And, so far as I know, the boys did not get into any of it. It was six inches from the back of the tent, and maybe 6 feet from the side, but the boys didn't play around the tent, just in front by the cooking-eating area, which was clear. Going to the restroom and showers was through the 'green', but we stayed on the little trail, and didn't let the green stuff touch us while we walked, single file coming or going.
We got back on the road home, and Chris was curious if we were going to take him to see the new color their room was painted. No, but we will see mom and dad, and they
Grandpa and the boys
Friday afternoon, sitting around under the pop up. will take you to see your new room colors.
We met Drew and Jackie at the Southern Flyer Diner (www.southernflyer.com) which is located at the Brenham Municipal Airport (
). Great place, great atmosphere, great food, and great entertainment for kids (watching planes come and go). Of course there aren't any 'big' planes, but the little ones are fun to watch too. You can see them up closer than at the big airport.
A good time was had by all, and a great rest had by Granny and Grandpa Sunday night!

Camping Trip
Dad, this is great... thank you!! The boys had a wonderful trip and are still talking about "camping with Granny & Grandpa". Thankfully, there were no signs of the "itchy green leafy ground cover" on the boys. Whew... that would not have been fun. Jackie and I had a lovely weekend... painted the boys room, put up airplane decals on the walls, did some appliance shopping, a segway tour downtown, a wine tasting, dinner & a movie, and still managed to squeeze in some r & r... It's amazing what all you can do when your schedule doesn't revolve around naptime. :)
