So this is a trailer park. These homes are 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom with built in central heating. Power water and waste water are all connected and they are transported to the site as a trailer. Once they are here they never move again. It's all about permits etc. Trailers don't have permits. They are quite comfortable. Just like a permanent home.... read more

So this is what I do in a day. I wake at 5:00am to 6:00am so I can be at the yard workshop by 6:00 to 7:00am. I do a daily check on my truck (oil level, coolant, clean air filters and tyres). I start the truck running and continue to check that all is as it should be. As a group we then leave for the farm that we are working on which can mean that we drive for up to an hour and a half one way. It's new and scary feeling racing down some of these country roads steering a 17,000kg truck at 120km/hr. I tend to travel at 90 km/hr until I get onto better roads. Once we get to the farm we find the service area, and wait for the Choppers ... read more

It's Saturday 12st May and this is the 2nd day we have had where we have not been in the field working. In the first 2 weeks of may I completed 183 hours in the truck plus travelling to and from work. Some of those days were 14 hours with one day 16 hours where we worked into the night to get a circle completed. I must say I didn't have much energy for anything else at the end of the working day except a shower, some dinner and to bed. In the last 5 days things have been a little bit easier and also I'm getting used to what I have to do. As per usual it takes about 6 weeks to get "fit " for a job. That is knowing what to do where ... read more

Still not used to going to the supermarket. Not only to I get there and feel so totally lost cause its a new supermarket, but the food is all different also. The once we have navigated the foreign aisles, brands and food substances, we get to the checkout. Not the conveyor belt type checkouts we know (and love) at New World or Countdown, but small counter tops where we the customer, are expected to stand and wait while the checkout operator empties the trolley for us, then when we have paid, we escort another supermarket employee to push our trolley (or carry our bags) out to our car where they also proceed to load the groceries into our vehicles. Apparently it is their 'priviledge, their job and we want to do it' I feel bad enough ... read more

So on my 46 mile drive to work today besides the only one or two other vehicles on the road, I was joined by a runaway antelope, who failed to indicate his intentions, and has considerably less knowledge of the Texas road rules than I do! Luckily I was onto it and managed a safe passing manoeuvre, leaving the antelope heading (the Kiwi way) back down the road. Unfortunately along the road daily are remains of antelope and other wildlife who have unsuccessfully encountered the highway. Even more unfortunate was one wee bunny rabbit about five minutes down the road, who shot out from nowhere across the road in front of me. I didn’t know that bunnys could fly! Poor thing, I did feel pretty bad!!... read more

Thurs 12 May 6.30am My biggest accomplishment for yesterday was going to Subway for a drink on the way to work. No big deal you say, ah but for me this means leaving the safety of my known driving route, driving in unknown territory, taking a short detour, then having to handle cash for the first time. Oh well I guess it can only get easier. Btw had an iced green tea- large- about 900ml or so for less than $2! And the best thing is today I can take the cup back for a refill for only 50cents! Only in America! Paul has been driving the swather (a giant lawn mower) rather than a truck. Hes the guy that goes through the field first and lays down the crop for the chopper to come through. ... read more

Hi from Oklahoma How long have I been here? Let me think, arrived in the USA Wednesday 13th and I'm here in El Reno, Oklahoma, about 25 miles west of Oklahoma City. We are currently holed up because of the rain but should be back to work tomorrow. Well, I think the guy at the US Embassy in Auckland wasn't far off when he said that I don't need to go to the moon after going to, Dalhart, Northern Texas. It's really really flat with no land marks. In fact unlike the moon there are a few buildings but nothing of real architectual merit. This my truck! Me and my are truck are getting to know each other. Most times the truck wins. With some coaching I'm not as scared of the gear changes and we ... read more
