Here are some photos of us opening up a corn circle. The Choppers are powerful enough (1000hp) to fire the feed over one truck into a second truck behind. I reckon firing it into the back of one truck trailing the chopper looks impressive.... read more

On Tuesady we arrived at the yard to be told that one of our colleagues had been killed in a vehicle accident. Trevor was a strapping young man 26 years of age who drove, what is called the "Stack Tractor". I knew very little about how this quiet gentle strapping young man met his death and really, for me, it's not important. What is important, I believe, is that we remember him as we knew him and celebrate the man that we knew. It's hard to describe the feeling amongst the truckers, the chopper drivers, the other stack tractor drivers and the support crew. I do know that the 2 way radios were auspiciously quiet compared to the usual morning banter that goes between Kiwi truckers and the Americans. I heard one of the Americans say ... read more

Last week we were cutting Insurance corn in an area called the South Sedan. Insurance corn is where the farmer is writing it off and claiming it on their policy. We are chopping the crop or some of the crop to try and salvage some feed. It's about 30 minutes drive from Dalhart towards the New Mexico boarder. After all the chopping was done. we then needed to move the service trailers and other machinery to the next location. I got the tractor and the merger. It took me 1 hour and 40 minutes to get from the field to the Dalhart yard. A Merger is a machine that is about 20 wide and merges several rows of cut grass into one. The tractor has more dials than I've ever seen. I dared not touch any ... read more

Here are some photos and a video of what we were doing yesterday. It was late afternoon (6:30pm) and there was a slow breeze coming from behind us. The consequence of this was that the dust and the chopped corn leaves were literally floating all around my cab and shining in the sun. We load the 10 meter trailer in 3 parts. The photos were taken when the chopper is outside my driving window. You can't hear the noise on the video because I had my window closed because of the dust. When I have my window open the noise is deafening. When I move forward so that the chopper can I load the back of my trailer, in these conditions I can't see where the chopper is (dust and sunlight) and have to rely on ... read more

Here are the photos that I took. Not sure they show the real picture. To give you some idea of the scale of the landscape, add 3 photos on either side and it looks the same. Today (12th July) I started work with a 20mm bolt screw embedded in one of my 8 truck tyres. So off to Heisers Tyre Service I go with a REAL coffee so that the guys to fix it. Once it's fixed it's into the wilderness to catch up with my colleagues who are hauling chopped immature corn crops that stand between 3 ft and 5 ft high. There is a drought here that is evolving into a disaster of epic proportions and is now the worst that the area has experienced in over 100 years. Everywhere I look I can ... read more

So I need to pick up where I left off, some time ago, and update you all on the last month, but first...back to July...Three and a half months away from home and finally my first bout of homesickness. Paul has been away in Phoenix, Arizona for a week and could be gone another two. So I'm left alone in this dusty, dry place, lulled to sleep at nights by the constant sound of the near (and not so near) huge crop irrigators, that have no mufflers! The noise pollution is incredible. But their argument is that there ain't no one out here to hear them! These things are huge and are doing their best to water the corn circles which are scattered around the panhandle and is quite a sight from the air ( or ... read more

Dalhart, Texas, our home away from home for six months. Elevation 4000ft above sea level, in a lil ol trailer park on the wrong side of town. Once a fortnight I venture into the main streets of town, although you'd never know it as it is deserted most all the time, and you can't tell which shops are open or which have been shut down, and find the bank. Drop off pay checks for the week at the drive through. I kid you not! My first experience of this instantly bought to mind the Flintstones, as the way it is done is as follows... Drive up to available drive thru lane, wind window down, you will be greeted by the teller who watches from the bank window apx 20meters away. Any transactions undertaken are placed in ... read more

This is perhaps a more difficult blog to write. OMG, to talk about myself and how I feel. Now that is scary. So how am I really? It's 3 months on the 13th sice I arrived in the USA and for most of that time I have been in a good frame of mind. Right now I would rate myself at a 6 out of 10, down an 8. Why? I know that depression doesn't go away. I know that I need to get better at managing my state of mind. I know that events effect me more than they should. I know that I'm getting better at managing what I think about but some days some thoughts get inside me and I have great trouble reigning them back or looking for the good is unpleasant ... read more

With temperatures in the mid to high 90s the ride home each night without aircon in the car (or my sauna on wheels), makes for one rather unpleasant trip! The thoughts running round my head on these occasions are along the lines of the headlines, "woman found melted in car, on side of road"! Trent, one of our bosses, is the guy apparently who can fix my aircon problem and has said that it's the squeaky wheel that gets fixed, so tomorrow begins the gentle squeaking via text messages until my dilemma is solved! Added interest to these daily journeys, besides the dead and decaying animal carcasses, is the constant navigation around the remaining bits and pieces of tyre rubber and wire. These an range from tiny spindly bits to pieces as big as a tyre ... read more

To say that we are a mixed bag would best describe the NZ team. Amongst the New Zealand crew their is a wealth of experience in truck driving and a host of other life skills. The reason that Todd & Trent Poling emlpoy us has a lot to do with an agreement that was set up a number of years ago, around 10 to 15 years in fact. The greatest advantage to Todd & Trent is that we are reliable and we work hard. Once we are here there isn't much to distract us from turning up for work on time and fit for work. This had apparently been a major problem prior to the arrangement being struck. . So who is on the Kiwi team? Brendon. He is the man we report to . He ... read more
