On our way towards the TEXAS/MEXICO border we stopped to camp on the beach at Port Aransas. We enjoyed a beautiful, wide, white beach. We could watch freighters come in and go out, with dolphins playing in their wake. For January what could be better?... read more

My mom, cousin & I are taking our first trip together. First we are going to Austin, then where? I like lively places, the others prefer beaches & shopping. I am torn should go to Corpus Christi, Padre Island or Port A? I am afraid Padre Island & Port A could be to boring but Corpus Christi could be to touristy. I need your help with suggestions. Thanks The Mileage Bookie... read more

I had left it so long to write another travelblog that I actually got an email from the site asking if I wish to continue! I promise there will be many more updates over the next few months - I think we will have a lot to write about. Since our last update in July things have been relatively hectic. My days as a lady of leisure finally finished at the end of August when I gained a job at a Middle School in Corpus. The job hunt in Corpus had been fairly difficult and it seemed that unless you were in oil or medicine, there wasn't much available. I took a job as a Teachers Aide at a Middle School (Grade 6-8 for the Australian readers) and so spend the majority of my day grading ... read more

For the past year, we have been volunteer divers at the Texas State Aquarium. Not only have we been fine-tuning our dive skills, but we have met up with an interesting cast of characters (both below and above the surface.) We have swum with eels like Houdini and Scooter and had the pleasure of helping to feed Popeye into his old age. We have fed the always friendly and hungry sting rays Harley, Abigail, June, Lois, Clark and Newbie. On our second volunteer day, we were already following Deanna around in "Off Shore" learning how to dodge Tammy Faye the queen triggerfish and divert the attention of Tiki when she was in a biting mood. Above all, lying on the bottom as Hans the sand tiger shark swims over has always been the biggest thrill. "From ... read more

Good Nite sleep and More Procrastination Red Roof Inn is way too comfortable. We spent way too much time in the morning dealing with maps, reading other travelogues and getting the VPhone to function properly. Of course there really is no pentence to pay as the only judge of our latency is in our own mind. Spare Parts for the Condo Belts Hoses Flares - no go-no drive at nite-rocks in the road Tire repair kit Timing Belt New battery Fluids, etc Reactions to Vaccinations Seems as if every nick and scrape Diane gets turns into a local infection. She seems to think this may be a side effect of the various vaccinations and medications routines we have been going thru for the trip. Nothing too serious but still disconcerting and uncomfortable. I (Jeff) have not ... read more

After having so many questions from friends about where Corpus Christi was....and what on earth was there....we decided that we would use our inaugural travelblog to introduce you to our new home! Corpus is a relatively large city located on the Gulf of Mexico. It has a population of around 278,000 accomodated in an urban sprawl which stretches out from the downtown area. The city's two major forms of income and employment are the petrochemical industry and the military. Corpus is also a popular tourist destination for Texans on holiday in search of fishing and watersports due to the pristine beaches located on South Padre Island around an hour south of Corpus. The city is built around a bay but the waterfront areas have not been developed in the way you might imagine and are relatively ... read more

... read more

Sun. Feb. 18th: Today we started the day by heading into Port Aransas to Cotter Street Coffee Shop which has Wifi. We were able to connect and check our email and post to our blog. I had Eggs Strata and George had a Derby (like a round croissant with the middle cut out and filled with eggs, broccoli, and various cheeses). Then he had a slice of caramel apple pie! After breakfast we headed home and picked up the dogs, to head to Padre Island National Seashore. The National Park’s Senior Pass (Golden Age Pass) came in handy again and we didn’t have to pay to get in. We had another nice beach walk. So far we haven’t found a complete sand-dollar, just ½ dollars and ¼ dollars. The visitor’s center had a nice display of ... read more

Thurs. Feb. 15th: Today we got off to a later start than planned due to a flat tire on the RV. It’s not as simple as having a flat tire on the car. We called our insurance road service and the guy that they usually send out for RV repairs was on vacation. So they called around to see who else could come out and ended up sending the non-RV wrecker. They weren’t able to remove the tire, but when they pumped air into the tire they found the leak at a loose valve stem extender. So we were on the road after about a two hour delay. We stumbled upon a nice campground in Bay City, Texas with full hook-ups including cable TV. The 3 rules at the campground were simple: Speed limit 8 miles/hour, ... read more
