I woke up early and didn’t feel like I would be able to go back to sleep so just started up the truck and started driving to Corpus Christi checking out beaches along the way. The closer I got to Corpus the more “Natural” the beaches became. I check out the beach at the J P Luby Park and got seriously stuck in the sand. If I had not been able to put my truck in 4 wheel drive I would still be there or paying a fortune to get pulled out…At Mustang Island State Park the signs said “4X4 only. It looked kind of chancy at that. At Padre Balli Park I needed my 4 wheel drive to get to the pier so I said heck with it and turned around. I found out later ... read more

(Some of you have told me that you never realized that there are additional photos on most all the blogs. You must click on the first picture, it will enlarge , and the you will be able to click on the arrow under the picture pointing to the right to go to the next photo. There are 34 photos in this posting. ENJOY!) We've been here at Corpus Christi, Texas, for 6 weeks and we have 2 to go. I am making one blog to cover these last 6 weeks. It covers some of the main things I've seen , or see regularly. Every day I start out with a nice walk about sunrise. This walk is usually from 2 1/2 miles up to 6 miles. I always have a camera with me and many of ... read more

It was a month ago that I posted my last blog. During this time Susie and I have been here living in Corpus Christi. We've rented a small condo unit and will be here till early March. As I have said throughout our winters' blogs, we are amateur bird-watchers. I also said in my last blog that I would try and put together a few pictures that I have taken of some of the birds that we have seen down here in S. Texas. These pictures are of wild birds only (no zoo shots) and are only a "smattering" of shots that I have taken while out bird watching. I wish I had a longer telephoto lens with me this winter. But since I didn't bring anything bigger than 300mm, I had to do some pretty ... read more

Got our van back yesterday, but on the way back to the hotel the "service engine soon" light came on and it began to hesitate and buck. Bill turned right around and went back, but being Friday afternoon...everyone was gone. They told us to bring it back this morning, which he did. Thank god it was just antifreeze that had got into places it shouldn't have....not a big problem. SO.....we will back on the road this morning heading further south. Since we can't cross the border till Monday, I'm hoping we can find a another cheap place on the beach at South Padre Island...about 20 miles this side of Brownsville. May as well enjoy our last full day in the States! I will blog either later today or tomorrow morning with our location. ... read more

Well, the good news is that we actually enjoyed our day today. Took off in our rental car and travelled around the area....out to the barrier beach, stopping along the way. We even visited a decommissioned aircraft carrier that they've made into a museum. It was fun day and we got to see more of this area than just this motel room and immediate area. The bad news is that we won't be able to cross over the border till Monday. The part for the van didn't come in today. They've promised that it would be in tomorrow and that we would have our vehicle back by the end of the day. That would be Friday afternoon. There are no border crossings Saturdays or Sundays. So, I think Saturday morning we'll head south, closer to Brownsville.....just ... read more

Well, Hermine has passed...but now we're dealing with the van. Last night (Monday eve) was pretty wild with much rain and wind.....lots and lots of wind. It sounded like a typical New England Nor'Easter lying in bed listening. The difference being that it was 80 degrees and muggy outside.....not 10 degrees and snowing. Now, we have to deal with the van. Tomorrow morning, we bring it in to the local Ford dealership where they will determine whether we need a whole manifold, or can get away with just a part. We're hoping for just the part, of course, mainly because it's about a $400 difference in price. Whatever it be, we'd love them to finish the job tomorrow so we can continue to Brownsville by early evening....and cross the border Thursday morning. Friday morning will be ... read more

Our luck has run out. We made it within 2.5 hours of the border (2300 miles) without hitting any traffic or bad weather. The van, the dogs, lodging.....everything perfect, till now. Tropical storm Hermine is keeping us here for a few days. Supposed to dump up to 6-8 inches of rain here tomorrow. We also began smelling anitfreeze a couple of days back. We stopped often to check fluid levels and kept our eye on the temp gauge...but no real big problem occured. Once we got into Corpus Christi, we found a place to get the oil changed and this situation checked. I wish it were just the radiator. That would be simple. We need a manifold....to the tune of about $800. If this was going to happen, we're just glad it's here and not once ... read more

Budgeting has put a tight hold on Summer Vacations this year but I refuse to go down without a fight!! My solution? Lets "getty up" to the part of Texas that has the beaches!! Corpus Christi is the most well know beach area because of the mainy attractions such as the U.S Lexington Battleship and the State Aquarium, however the actual beach part runs very low on my score card. The sand is a bit on the rocky side and the waves are not the relaxing soft waves I have come to adore over my travels. If I was to give advice to other families I would not suggest you roll out the mats on this beach for swimming. The overall city looks runned down to poverty or neglect. However, the restaurants are pretty darn good ... read more

Today, we rode along the south of Texas, maybe 10 kms or so from the Gulf of Mexico, enough to catch a glimpse of the occasional "bayou" and the Gulf itself, once in a while. But fields after fields of crops as far as the eye can see, along with oil or nuclear plant. Texas is big indeed. And fun... if you like staring at the infinity! So this was our 3rd straight day of 500 + kms: when we don't stop to take pictures, we cover more ground! Good thing we enjoy the riding part! Did we mention that we have yet to see a drop of rain or a temperature below 30? Not robbing it in. We are longing for nice cool Canadian breeze! Enjoy it for us. We will soon as well! Getting ... read more
