Hab ich schon gesagt, dass es hier in Austin einfach nur crazy ist? Also: Austin ist crazy!! Anfangs hatte ich echt so meine ... read more

So, back in 2006, I took my oldest daughter, Zoë, who was 10 years old at the time, to England for 7-8 days. Problem was, I have 2 daughters, and my youngest daughter, Rhiannon, was only 5 years old at the time. Not only was she 5, but she was a VERY tempermental 5. I knew that there was no way physically nor emotionally that I could survive such a trip and remain sane. In order to keep things "fair", I made an agreement with Rhiannon that, upon turning 10, she could pick ANY place on the map and we'd go. Over the years, Rhiannon has picked all sorts of locations - Japan, Egypt, Austrailia, Russia, etc. Now, last year, I went hiking in REMOTE parts of China. Seeing as how I don't speak nor read ... read more

We are all tired and in need of a rest day. Sam said we should be taking a rest day, but since we are close to our goal we press on. We have had some rather nice weather lately, and because of this the cool weather this morning was a shock. When we started off the temp was a balmy 40', burr. I called the front desk last night for a 6:30 wake up call. Bob knocked on our door at 6:55 and we were still asleep. We all rushed around and were still on the road by 7:30 as planned. Since I've lost my coat I had to rethink my clothes for the day. With different arrangements I was ready to leave. We took off on hwy 71 which was highly traveled but with a ... read more

THE BASICS After a couple of days exploring the Fredericksburg area, we drove the short distance to San Antonio, stopping briefly at Luckenbach on the way. We explored many historic sites in San Antonio, and feel just a bit guilty that we did not go to the rodeo that's there for most of February, and was less than a mile from our RV Park. A delight was meeting Jennie's in-laws, the Sillers, for dinner at a very Mexican, large and packed, restaurant in the Market Square area. On to Austin, which is a really cool city as well. The enormous university, the music scene, the Capitol area, the riverside walking trails - it is vibrant and "manageable." Maybe I say manageable because I am rather dreading our next city, Houston, which seems so huge. So we ... read more

Well the time has come for all good things to come to an end - I took Glenda to the airport this afternoon to commence her journey back home. From when she flies out of Austin to the time she arrives in Australia will be approximately 24 hours in total travel time - a 4 hour flight to San Francisco then around a 5 hour wait for the Qantas flight to Australia which takes a bit over 14.5 hours. She loses a day on the return flight - leaving here in Austin at 2:30pm on Saturday and arriving into Sydney at around 8:30am Monday morning. We did have one small hiccup - in America the airlines charge for each checked bag so I had paid the $25 on-line fee for her one suitcase. After it was ... read more

A beautiful warm sunny last weekend continued into Monday (25C) By Wednesday the temps were below zero, by Thursday it was (-6C) and this morning we have woken up to 2 inches of snow....... oh very exciting I couldnt wait to get out there. Most flights have been cancelled out of Austin this morning. Clear skies are reported for tomorrow afternoon so I should be right to fly to San Francisco then the long flight to Sydney. Missing everyone, there's no place like home. Col has been invited by his workmates to a 'Superbowl Sunday BBQ', for the football final (Gridiron) on this Sunday. We have had a great holiday, getting a great taste of America, especially Austin, being here 3 weeks I've managed to see quite a bit of the place. Anyway will see ... read more

Well it is Wednesday evening here now and what a contrast in the weather!! Last Sunday was very warm - around 78 degrees F (25 degrees C). We were walking around in T-shiirts and shorts. So we drove into downtown Austin and hired bicycles to ride around Lady Bird Johnson Lake. For those who may recall USA president Lyndon B Johnson, he lived here in Texas - in fact out in the Johnson City area - which we passed through on our way to Fredericksburg as we described in our last blog update. Many things are named in his memory here in Texas. Lady Bird Johnson was his wife and was obviously very popular, having the main town lake named after her, as well as some street names etc. We rode the bikes to the South ... read more

DFW to Austin Tues. 1 Feb. This will likely be episodic, so hang on! Currently on Amtrak train 21 in the last rays of the afternoon sun - which runs Chicago to San Antonio TX - having joined it at Fort Worth, lvg at 2.10pm. It was there already at 1.50 when I arrived, having hailed a passing cab (very slowly due to ice) outside the Sheraton - somewhat surprised to see an elderly black lady inside but it got me to the station - or what they grandly call in Ft Worth ITC - that's Intermodal Transport Centre - i.e. local rail to Dallas, the TRE; the Amtrak train; buses and Greyhounds. At 4.04pm we passed Crawford TX (blink and miss it) the ranch home of Pres. Bush – not that you can see anything. ... read more

For those who may not recall who quoted the words "there we were - me and Davey Crockett - shoulder to shoulder and backs to the wall" they were from Private Duffy in the 60's sitcom "F Troop" when he claims he is the sole survivor of the Alamo siege in 1836. Anyway it is a "Segway" to our next tourist venture - we took the hour and a half drive South to San Antonio last Sunday and looked around the Alamo site - of which there is not much left of the original fort. Another highlight of San Antonio is the very pretty river walk which meanders for "miles" along the river with restaurants down each side. Some people may have seen on Glenda's facebook that we even spotted "Where's Wally" down there. On the ... read more

We lost another 2 hours when arriving at a wet Austin airport. It has made it even more difficult catching up with things at home. We have been here for a little over a week, and now 17 hours behind y’all. Austin is the State Capital of Texas, it’s 4th largest city, having over 1.7million people. IT, politics and a huge university (90,000 students) help to make it a thriving place - not to mention the music and entertainment which makes it known as a music capital and their local slogan “Keep Austin Weird”. Sunday we drove into "Downtown Austin" walked along 4th, 5th and 6th Streets most famous for the cafes, restaurants and entertainment. Walked through the Texas State Capital grounds and beautiful 18th century Capital Hill building, amazing!! Went to a Brewery/Restaurant for dinner ... read more
