Well, here we are. Saturday morning, September 10. I’ve been waiting for that day for weeks now. If we decided to visit the state of Texas in late summer for a specific non-football related reason, the specific timeframe for our road trip was all about this date: BYU at Texas, Cougars at Longhorns...yeah, this is college football. We still have a long way to go though (Literally speaking). Kick off is scheduled for 06:00 PM and Austin is 165 miles from Houston, roughly a 3 hours drive. I don’t mind, this should be fun... 3 hours on the road, perfect weather (i.e. hot and sunny), a nice car, good tunes on the radio, considering we’re tourist and not local, we decide to make the journey with the top down, after all, this is the reason why ... read more

Hi, sorry for not writing in so long. For our last day in San Fran we had already seen the main tourist attractions and so we just decided to have a chilled day and walk to the park. When we got there we decided to go and keep walm in the museum - San Fransisco is also known as Fog City and so is quite chilly! The Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park is amazing!! We had been to the aquarium by the pier the day before but the museum was a lot better and had an aquarium too. We spent the day watching the coral reef which was really stunning, and walked through a glass walkway which mimicked the flooded rainforest floor. The also had a planetarium with shows throughout the day included in ... read more

This morning we lazed about the hostel and caught up on sleep (Alice must've slept for more that 12hrs). Not only relaxing, we also realised how cost effective this can be, since you don't have to buy breakfast if you're not awake to eat it. We then caught a bus to the rental car depot. This proved a ripe hunting ground for Alice's and my new competition: who can photograph the biggest fatty. Certainly some prime specimins on the bus. We certainly got our money's worth out of the rental car receptionist. Despite making him come into the car park and point out all the different buttons (it is a very flashy car) we still couldn't work out how to start the engine. Eventually Alice sheepishly went back to ask: turns out, you have to press ... read more

I'm writing this from the common room area of Hostelling International Austin, which is an amazing little hostel (although the guy opposite me did just genuinely say 'yo man', which I'm not sure I'll ever get used to). It's also been over 40oC for 14 days in a row now, and my body is a bit confused as to why I'm putting it under so much strain. This morning we decided the full Texan experience wouldn't be complete without visiting a crazy happy clappy church, so we got up and left before the rest of the doprm was even awake, and caught the bus to Hyde Park Southern Baptist Church. While it wasn't as crazy as some of the ones you see on TV, there was still a fair amount of hand-reaching-out during the awful 'hymns' ... read more

Hi Ho!

Woah! Had the best day ever today. Got up late, no surprise! Headed out for some breakfast which for me was a sausage and egg taco, with home made tabasco. Then we went to the west side of 12th to receive our 'segway' induction! If you have never heard of this most amazing mode of transport, then check out Gob in 'Arrested Development'. This is a two wheeled gyroscopic scooter which relies on the rider moving their body forward or back to go faster and slower, and side to side for turning! The most inccredible thing is that after around 30 mins. it feels so natural!! Everyone should try this as it is impossible not to have a fixed grin! Went to 6th st for a couple of lone stars and finished off the night in ... read more

Austin is the live music captial of the US and you are meant to be able to see/hear anything here. Wandered around the kitchy costume shops and vintage clothes shops in the SoCo district. One shop 'Allen Boots' was literally lined floor to ceiling with every kind of eccentric, attention-grabbing boot you could image. Unfortunately people were pretty touchy about taking pics of their merchandise. Also denim everything and anything encrusted with rhinestones and studs was out in full force. I picked up a pair of jeans which weighed a tonne. Later on I went to the Broken Spoke Texas honkytonk. Unfortunately it was an older crowd doing the two-step polka. No rockabilly here! Moved on to the Continental Club which had a 'Howling Wolf' tribute night which was amazing. The next day I checked out ... read more

Hi Everyone! I commencing part II of my world tour here in Texas. Austin is the capital of Texas, the self proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World, home of the largest urban bat colony in the world and the residence of my little brother. All of these things draw visitors from around the world. Especially Illinois. And did I mention it is about 100 degrees and sunny here everyday? Delightful. I took the greyhound bus from Bloomington, IL to get here. It took 36 hours and four bus changes to get here. I left Illinois on the 25th of May and got to Texas on the 26th. But since it only cost 87 dollars I feel it was worth the inconvenience. I have more time than money now since I am not working 40 hours ... read more

We left home yesterday and headed north to Austin. (Yes, I know this is supposed to be an East Texas road trip.) As some of you may know, my birthday was Saturday. Sunday was the best time to get together to celebrate. We met at Joe’s duplex at 6:00 planning to drive to Matt’s El Rancho for dinner. Unbeknownst to me, the guys had made plans for Andy to bring his limo (Andy drives limousines in Austin) and take us all over to Matt’s. What a wonderful surprise and what a wonderful evening. More tomorrow!... read more

Before the Show When we woke up on Misty Matthews' various couches, we looked around at the disaster scene surrounding us. It was pretty bad when we had arrived the night before, but the extra beer bottles and cans, plus the natural detritus left behind by a group of wandering 20-somethings. We all took this wonderful opportunity to get clean again. Miraculously, Steve also decided that this would be a prime time for his first shower in at least 3 days (and we're talking 3 days of car travel and hard rocking ). He came out in his boxers, air drying himself since apparently Misty didn't have the foresight to prepare guest towels for her random weekend encounters with strange bands. We said thanks to our gracious hosts, and made moves to the van. We... read more
