It was very nice to be back in Texas with the warm weather. I would first make a short side-trip to San Antonio, seeing some of the history of Texas with The Alamo - the most visited place in Texas - where 189 defenders fought to the death against 1,800 Mexican attackers. While the entire defenders were wiped out, it would prove to be the inspiration for redemption and victory a month or so later. There isn't so much of a 'sight' to see (half a small church), but the history is interesting enough. Very strangely and bewilderingly, the street opposite the Alamo, (once an actual part of the Alamo grounds no less), now houses a Ripleys Believe it or Not Odditorium, Tussauds Wax museum, Guinness World Records 'museum', a Haunted House and Tomb Raider 3D ... read more

We made it into San Antonio super late, and just crashed the hell out after another night of eating chips and cold soup out of the can. Also, the motel was so freaking scary. Birds everywhere, a security guard, and signs that warned patrons not to leave their rooms after 10pm. Good news was that there was a Taco Cabana across the street and it shared a parking lot with Whataburger. Rob discovered the A-1 Burger that changed his life, and he claims it’s the best burger he’s had on the road. That’s saying a lot as Rob’s hamburger consumption was way above the national average on this trip. We didn't do much in San Antonio except veg. One night, Abigail and I braved the 10pm curfew and the millions of birds to go get tacos. ... read more

Railroad Lore Every parent can attest that boys have an innate fascination with trains and railroads. At least we certainly did in my generation. I still vividly remember my first train trip. It was 1952 and I was 7 years old. My mother and I rode a steam locomotive pulled train from the border city of Mexicali to Mexico City. At seven I did not feel discomfort, although looking back I cannot imagine sitting in those rather hard seats in non-air-conditioned discomfort for two days. It was a great adventure. I loved every moment, the smells, the noises, the colors and the people. Tomorrow, I look forward to experiencing a travel back in time. To a time when the railroad was the primary mode of transportation in this Nation, “And the sons of Pullman porters & ... read more

OMG! Tomorrow's the day we fly to London, UK! While the flight is less than 24 hours away, I still have not even imagined the travel day or thought beyond laundry, packing, cleaning; basically wrapping up all the ends here before we depart. We leave at 4pm from ATX and have a short hop to Houston--where we wait for a couple of hours before our overnight flight across the Atlantic Ocean (note here: I hate flying over the ocean). Hopefully we can all get some sleep before arriving in London (at what will be 330am Texas time) at 930 Sunday morning. I'm sure the time adjustment will be fun for all! Watch for an exciting post coming soon--a post from the first day of our big adventure.... read more

McKinney Falls State Park is the closest state park to Austin, TX. It is located southeast of Austin on Onion Creek and has two waterfalls, the boringly named Upper and Lower Falls. The park has some great shady trails, my favorite being the trail that leads to the rock shelter. Native Americans had lived here for centuries protected by the natural coverings. You pass right by Old Baldy, one of Texas' oldest bald cypress trees at 103 feet and 500 years. The falls allow swimming in its cool waters. It makes for a great summer visit for the family.... read more

Nine days to go before the long plane ride over the Atlantic. Phoenix will tell anyone interested that we are "taking a plane to London and a train to Paris." I'm not sure what he expects, but he did see a large man on a bicycle yesterday and remark, "he's going to France." Maybe Phoenix made a connection between a man on a bike and all our days of Le Tour viewing this summer. Who knows? Maybe he expects all people on bikes to be going to France. More news to follow!... read more

This doesn't have anything to do with Austin. This is just a tribute to a great aviator, and space pilot. I don't use the word astronaut. Which he was. But he was more. He turned disaster into success twice in space. First on Gemini 8, then on Apollo 11. In my eyes, that makes him a space pilot. Look it up on Wikipedia.org... read more

Well Austin has been a nice change from the hustling big cities we’ve been in so far! Everything and everyone are very relaxed and laid back here and we’ve met some really friendly and helpful people :) We ventured downtown this morning and after walking through a very deserted 6th street (the strip of live music bars) decided to escape the 37 degree sun back in the hotel pool and go back later. We caught the 1.5 million Mexican bats fly from under a bridge at sunset – it may sound boring but it was so crazy! It was a bit hard to take pictures though because they were moving so fast. We stood there for 15 minutes and they were still coming out from under the bridge which was lined the whole way ... read more

I feel the end of summer rapidly approaching! Its scaring me to death so I've decided to take a short road trip to visit Colby in Corpus Christi. This will be one of my last visits since we've decided not to move there after all. I will miss Corpus with its beaches and seafood. I will shed a tear later though. My first stop was the Texas State Capitol Complex. I headed over to see my most favorite monument EVER: The Tejano Monument! I feel a special affinity to this monument being a first generation Texan. The monument showcases the Tejano's contributions to Texas History: Family, Ranching, the Longhorn, Vaqueros, and Exploration. I love the vaquero the most. Vaqueros taught Cowboys all there is to know! Plus, its nice seeing my people finally being visible on ... read more

Hi everyone!! Just a quick blog to check in with you all. We flew into Austin this morning, what a horrendous night of travelling! 3 hours layover in Houston after 2.5 hours in the smallest plane ever!! Then a 24 minute (yes 24 minute!) flight from Houston to Austin. Just to add to the travelling we had an hour and ten minute bus to our hotel where we are going to chill out by the pool for the rest of the day. Scotty didn't sleep a wink last night and Annie had about 2 hours so we want to recover for a full day tomorrow. In spite of the looooong journey, our first impressions of Austin are good so far! We'll tell you all about it in tomorrow's blog! We're 6 hours behind now instead of ... read more
