Friday was a travel day, across Wisconsin & Minnesota...saw lots of farms & cows! Rolled into the Badlands at sunset...wow! Found a campsite with a great view, check out the photos Chloe took from our campsite of the horses! Next morning we got up @ 7am and hiked the "Notch Trail". 1 3/4 mile trail throught a canyon, up a step wood ladder to some great views. The rangers warn that it's not the anyone with a fear of heights & to watch out for the drop-offs...they aint joking! Got back on the road to Mt. Rushmore, did you know that it was named after a slick New York lawyer trying to get land rights to the gold in the Black Hills and asked the guide what the name of the mountain was called and the ... read more

After a cold night's sleep in the van (at a KOA, not Wal mart...yay, showers!) we woke up to frost on the inside of our windows. A hot shower felt great! We left for our next destination: Mt Rushmore. On our way we made an impromptu stop at a veteran's cemetery with fields of white tombstones that could be seen from the road. The pristine green grass and the manner in which the two men working in outside stopped their work and removed their hats as a funeral procession drove increased our sense of respect for those who served our country in this way. After walking up and down a few rows a man who was a Vietnam veteran stepped out of his car to pay his respects to friends and acquaintances. He shared with me ... read more

We left the campground around 8:30 hoping to beat the crowds to Mt. Rushmore. We pulled off the highway and took some pictures of the still not completed Crazy Horse monument. At Mt. Rushmore we were surprised to get a good spot in the parking garage near the elevator and the entrance. We left Moe in the car where it was cool and comfortable for him. There were quite a few people there already, but not suffocatingly so. The skies were blue when we arrived, but after touring the museum and watching some film, we noticed the storm clouds moving in. We saw George Washington and Abraham Lincoln posing for pictures in the visitor center and the viewing area. I do enjoy Mt. Rushmore, and find it quite moving. The rain began just as we were ... read more

Now that my moving back to Chicagoland is definite, my departure date from Colorado seems to be looming closer and closer, and I'm suddenly worrying about all these great places close by, and don't want to miss out on any potential trips!! Since Mount Rushmore is only 6 hours away, I decided to go when I had two days off work. I drove up late on Wednesday, leaving from work at about 8pm. This was my first time being in Wyoming, but since it was dark, I'm afraid I didn't get to see anything...not that there seems to be much to see on the eastern side! I made it up to Custer, South Dakota at around 2am, and ended up sleeping in my jeep for a couple hours. Even though I'm pretty short, I wish my ... read more

Yesterday looked like a great day for a train trip so we drove to Hill City to get on the Black Hills Central Railroad (1880 Train). More beautiful scenery & a great way to travel! What train trip would be complete with out stopping at the local Christmas store. I think the store is going to have to reorder after Kay finished shopping. I may have to ride on the hood on the way home to accomodate the packages. We capped off the day with an evening ceremony at Mount Rushmore. A video was shown commemorating the four presidents that concluded with a flag ceremony. All servicemen & women present (active duty & retired) were recognized & invited down to the stage to participate. This was another high watermark for this trip. More tomorrow.... read more

Day 6 Rapid City, SD - Sisseton, SD - Enderlin, ND Another long day....but....WOW....what a day!! Ok...so Yesterday was a very long day!! Today we only have to see several major national monuments and drive back across South Dakota....No Problem!! We started our day with a hearty breakfast buffet at the hotel. Next stop,Mount Rushmore. The monument is very accessible to everyone. It gave me a very patriotic feel as we looked at it....but the rest of it was rather commercial. I like my national parks to be a bit more.....rustic. Next, we drove off to find the Crazy Horse Memorial. Again, cool....but...we did a drive by. They wanted $27 to see the unfinished carving that we could see from the road...so we did. A park ranger gave us a heads up on Custer St... read more

What a day! I have been so looking forward to seeing this place & was not disappointed. We took the audio tour & I highly recommend it. I can't send you the audio so we took lots of pictures so enjoy. Traveled next to Custer State Park. On the way to the park we saw a pigtail bridge. Heard about them but had never seen one. At CSP we got some wonderful shots of turkey & bison. Lots of beautiful scenery! On the way out of the park we saw Cathedral Spires. We took a break at our cabin before heading to the Crazy Horse Memorial. While sitting at the table outside our cabin, 3 wild turkeys dropped by like they owned the place (Maybe they did?). After spending time at the Crazy Horse visitor center, ... read more

After a quiet stop over in Hot Springs we headed for the much anticipated Mount Rushmore. We drove through Wind Cave National Park as a via point and we were so pleased we did. Around one of the bends we were delighted to see a small herd of Bison. We are hoping to spot some in Yellowstone, so this was an added bonus. They appeared to be females with their young and we managed to get quite close to them (in our car). We also spotted a few prairie dogs, with their heads peering out of their holes they looked so cute. We arrived at Mount Rushmore around lunchtime and took our time walking around and taking photos. Fortunately for us it was very quiet so we could take our time. Once you are at Mount ... read more
