Yesterday was all Interstate-95 driving and stressful in spots. Today was all back county and country roads and it was relaxing and enjoyable. Leaving Savannah and heading north took me over that really high bridge I photographed last night on the cruise and I was immediately in South Carolina. Being in no hurry, I took a ride off my route and headed for Hilton Head. My plan was to drive down the beach strip and see how things had changed since the last time I was there. I think that was almost 20 years ago. Unfortunately my GPS didn't cooperate and took me the some city building in Hilton Head which was nowhere near the beach. Leaving there I realized I was going the wrong way and ended up at a Wildlife Preserve. That was a ... read more

Hey there, it looks like I am off on another Camino. In 2017, I walked the Camino Frances, a 500-mile walk across the top of Spain to Santiago de Compostella, the resting place of Saint James. It wasn't easy, but it was fun. In 2019, I walked part of the Camino Portuguese, a 200-mile plus walk from Porto, Portugal to Santiago. This one wasn't as enjoyable, partly because I got lost a couple times, and party because I didn't make any friends. I was planning walking the Camino del Norte last year, but COVID intervened. My wife heard about my plans, and said she'd like to go with me. Since the Camino del Norte is a bit less crowded, but a lot more rugged, I suggested we do the Camino Frances. Well, after a lot of ... read more

My daughter Tanya and her boyfriend Ben came at 8:30 to take us to GSP Airport. We arrived at GSP and checked in. I had been worried about my passport, since it expired right around the 6 month time frame I read about. Apparently I was wrong or it was okay. The other thing I was worried about was our backpacks being too big, but apparently no problem there either. We then went up to go thru TSA. I had to be padded down because I didn’t think I had to remove any non-metal items, but the rule was to remove everything. Oh well. I had it easy compared to Manoli, because her bar of laundry soap keyed off the scanner and she had to have everything taken out of her backpack. We found our gate, ... read more

Boy, is it good to get out and doing a little traveling! Even if it just a two night trip. Took the Black Beast (AKA R8) to the historical section of Charleston. Leona and I had been there over 30 years ago, however, it was mostly a tennis trip with a week spent at Wild Dunes. Unfortunately, the week after we left in 1989, Hugo caused a lot of damage to the area. On this trip, the focus was more on understanding the history, appreciating the diversity of cultures and the booming food scene. We stayed at the Wentworth Mansion which was built in 1886 and is one of the top historical boutique hotels in the nation. First stop on the way was the Boone Plantation. The Jamaicans have the language Patois while the slaves of ... read more

Sunday: Great Smokey Mountain National Park day 1. Drove through the park on the main road from east to west, stopping at all the scenic overlooks. The weather was overcast, about 55* but really humid. I'm so not accustomed to hiking in humidity. I hiked up to the Chimney tops you can see in the photo which was incredibly steep and the last half mile was over 400 steps. Phew! Smoky mountains averages 60 inches of rain a year which makes everything so green and water flows year round with so many waterfalls everywhere. By about 4pm the temperature started to radically drop and it started to rain (and later snow). Monday: Smoky Mountain National Park day 2. Driving back to the park this morning was like a winter wonderland where so many hills and mountains ... read more

Unfortunately with covid cases on the rise and South Carolina being very bad about mask wearing my adventuring is becoming a little less interesting this week :( Still fully enjoying being on the road as a nomad and I'm triple vaccinated but I still would rather not spread covid or get sick so most of this week was spent at home making some food, reading books, catching up with some friends virtually and going for dog walks. Sunday: A nice long walk on the Swamp Rabbit Trail (still don't know why everything is named that here lol) which is a paved trail that goes through almost all of Greenville for over 20 miles. The weather was divine, not super humid and was about 75*. Crazy warm for a December day here. In the evening I logged ... read more

Sunday: Theresa was still in town we drove around town and checked out some local spots- downtown Greer with a Posada market. Then we looked at some real estate- a historic fabric mill turned into apartments and a tiny home community. As much as I've been interested in tiny homes and I've seen a few empty homes at shows I'd never seen a community of them and it was sooo cute! Tuesday: Saw a Cirque du Soleil show called "Holidaze". It was cute and there were a few impressive acts but there were honestly at least a dozen bad mess ups like falling or dropping things which made it not so great overall. Thursday: Went back to Gather GVL- the restaurants in converted containers. Nice guitar duo singing christmas music. Friday: A nice morning walk around ... read more

Sunday: First day in South Carolina. In the morning we walked around Falls on the Reedy park and saw the waterfall in downtown Greenville. It seemed like there were a lot of shops and restaurants around the downtown and west end that just weren't open yet on a Sunday morning. But many things were decorated for christmas and it was kind of nice seeing everything so tranquil. In the afternoon Copper and I headed to Paris Mountain State Park which is about 6 miles out of town. It's South Carolina's most visited park. We did a nice hike with a fair amount of incline- the most we had seen since Colorado since mountains don't really exist in Kansas or Kentucky! Monday and Tuesday: Work days, walks around the neighborhood and time at home at the airbnb ... read more

We'd already pretty much packed up the night before, so with our 5:30am alarms, we were downstairs waiting for our ride by 5:45am. Finally, at almost 6:10, our ride showed up. The nice gentleman apologized for running late and took to Boise International Airport, dropping us off out front. We checked in, got our tickets and were boarding pretty much on time. I make this statement because almost nothing was on time or easy after that! We arrived at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport around 11am Central time. Since our connecting flight was not until after 7pm that night and wouldn't show up on the boards for a while, we settled down near the gate we'd arrived at, after a long walk around Terminal C. Manoli got out her book and I hooked up my PC and settled ... read more

Sorry for the delay entering this last day, but got sidetracked. I woke up even earlier than necessary, so we decided to go ahead and pack up and check out of the motel at around 9am. Manoli decided she wanted to check out the Isle of Palms area before our tour of Ft. Sumter, so we headed out. We finally found it, but there weren't any good places to park, and it was pretty much just a residential beach community, so we just drove around a bit, then headed back to Patriots Point for our tour. You have to pay $5 to enter the parking lot at Patriots Point, but they have a couple other tours from the same place, and the parking was very convenient. The other tours were a helicopter ride, a tour of ... read more
