" Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the World. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories." Ray Bradbury. According to the travel plans, next stop scheduled is Lancaster PA. A two block walk away from our NYC hotel was Penn Station where an Amtrak train was scheduled to leave station at 10h50 bound for Lancaster. For us South Africans from the quiet backwaters of the Eastern Cape, Penn station was a maelstrom of movement and semi chaos. People, trains, schedules and just a hint of panic as we anxiously studied the train departures and platforms. In the midst of all this we were requested to "evacuate" our seating area while the local feds searched a suspect looking bag. Also approached by a ... read more

"Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer" Destinations conjure up a myriad of fascinating thoughts. Enchanting, exciting and exhilarating places and countries. Mystery, and often the great unknown. But all destinations have one common denominator and that is one has to travel there by some mode. A few centuries ago the journey would have been undertaken by ship and on departure to wherever, it was a given that it would take “weeks” or possibly “months”. If you got to your destination you were generally a lucky sod in the knowledge that the ship hadn’t ended up on the bottom of some remote ocean. Today we are spoilt for choice and air travel puts us within reach of all corners of the globe in next to no time. It’s convenient, comfortable and supposedly ... read more

April 6, 2018 Weather: 45 to 72 in DC and sleeting in Pittsburg (wahhhhh) States: DC to Pennsylvania City: Washington DC to Pittsburg Miles: 258 Hours Driving: 4 hrs 35 min Hotel: Restaurants: Fresh (in the Pentagon) We packed up the car and had breakfast this morning. We did our best to follow Loretta’s directions to get to the Pentagon. We were already running late for our own schedule. She was on our timeline which resembled more of a squiggle line. She told us to drive to the Pentagon Mall which is literally a mall this time with a Macys. Of course, we couldn’t park at the mall because of our van, the magic bus. Not magic enough to fit. So we drove around and parked down the road at another kind of mall that had ... read more

Well, this is officially my last blog post. On Thursday, we spent time evaluating the program and packing. Our final meal was Pad Thai and sticky rice with mango for dessert. I had ten helpings...but it's fine. I somehow managed to pack all of my souvenirs in my small suitcase and everything else in my large one. I had to help Libby pack her suitcases which required me to put my entire body weight on it in order for it to close. Before we left I decided to give Mean my Winnie the Pooh drink dispenser because there was no way for it to fit in my suitcase. I hope she likes it and is able to supply her roommates with an abundance of water :) At 8 pm we met our buddies downstairs with our ... read more

Hallelujah...our journey has begun. It had a pretty rocky start last week but after time, patience, repairs and a checkbook, we are on our way. This time, the only loud squealing heard upon pull-out was our squeals of joy, excitement and relief. We adopted that famous motto: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again......we did. Our second shot has been a success.....thus far: fingers crossed. It’s so heartwarming to see all your beaming faces as you settle into your seats. Welcome aboard. Lulu is doing her happy dance....best she can without legs. The car repair place called Cory last evening at 5:00 PM to let us know the car was repaired and ready to go. Yahooooo. They fixed all the damage done cause by dragging it down the road....groan. Who would have thought?? We ... read more

Well, here we are another year later, preparing for our Thailand trip. This year we will be traveling with two faculty and thirteen senior BSN students. Everyone is getting excited. I am in the process of finalizing my documents so that I can open my CANVAS site to the students. Since Travelpod closed their site this year, I am experimenting with this travel blog hoping that it will meet the course needs for reflective journaling. So far, I am happy with the features. As I prepare for this year's course, I am reminded of how we began. For those of you just joining us this year, let me give you a brief introduction to our exchange program. I was approached in 2009 by a few nursing students asking if I would be interested in leading a ... read more

NOTE - I will be using some ice hockey words in this entry. So if you are not familiar with the game of ice hockey at all, you may want to skip this entry. I have been meaning to go to a Flyers hockey game for some time. It has been some time since I went to one, as tickets tend to be very pricey. Well, I decided to go to this one, as this was the cheapest option that I found on StubHub. I have not been to many Flyers games. My first game ever, was in 1990, at the Spectrum against the Detroit Red Wings. I remember it was a season finale game, as they were not going to the playoffs that season. After that, it would be 3 games at their current home, ... read more

June: one and done! 40 miles biked. Ok so I used three different bikes and four seats but my personal bike seat valets Chris and Taylor took good care of me. Exceptional scenery and perfect 70 degree weather. We arrived at the Trillium Lodge for a meal prepared by our guides. For what followed, I cannot accept any responsibility ... Ann: You know you've found the right bike group when 6 out of the 12 pull out a top shelf bottle of whiskey from their luggage. After dinner and three bottles of whiskey, the men sang Punjabi love songs. They taught us to dance to Bollywood songs and we taught them The Twist. Oh yeah, and we rode a bike 40 miles. #Internationalfun ... read more

I wasn't up that early in the morning, however whilst the others were showering and getting ready (I had already showered myself, just in case you're thinking I'm a slob) I walked around to get some final some photos. Philadelphia apparently means "city of brotherly love" and one of the sculptures to see is the "love" sculpture. After searching where it should have been I was advised that it has been taken away temporarily whilst the square it was in is being landscaped. There is a French "Amor" one near by if, by some chance, that is supposed to be any kind of substitute. Once we were sorted, we set about driving to New York. Our satnav badly let us down on the way to Philadelphia so this time we decided to ignore it and blindly ... read more
