I will remain writing about my store Wawa 8009, but with this entry I am writing about destruction of property. We have public restrooms that are for the convenience of our customers. In my store (as in some others) "tagging" (graffitti) has become prevalent. It is ugly, and it is everywhere especially in the men's room. They even etch on the mirror. We use standard graffitti remover, and sometimes that does not work. The "Anti Graffitti Network" was kind enough to send me a bottle of something called TAG AWAY, which has worked better, along with a powerwasher and scrubbing. We have even gone so far as to use brake fluid. It is time consuming to be constantly cleaning these rooms, and a waste of the labor I am allotted to run the store. We have ... read more

It's Day 5 and we are now in Philadelphia for the 2nd night. After a great night out at the ballpark last night, today we took the Rough Guide's advice for Philly and decided to head straight for the Independence Hall National Park. This is an area of about 4 blocks that contains most of the city’s historical landmarks. We started with the guided tour of Independence Hall which is where the Declaration of Independence was written and signed. Next we toured Congress Hall and saw the 2 chambers where the first House of Representatives and Senate met. And of course we couldn’t miss the famous Liberty Bell! The INHP is packed full of historic buildings, plenty to fill an entire day. You can even ride in a horse-drawn carriage all around it but we opted ... read more

Hello Sports Fans! Those of you who know me well will be aware that I have a certain fondness for Baseball, and despite having visited the USA on numerous occasions prior to my recent emigration, my good wife (who despite this mild rant, will be obeyed and respected at all times) never saw the need to take me to a live game. Suffice to say…that when we were offered tickets to go and see the local Greensboro Minor League team, the imaginatively named ‘Greensboro Grasshoppers’ (or Hoppers for short) on the evening of the 4th of July, I was bordering on hysteria! Not only was I about to fulfill a lifelong (ish) dream, but it was going to happen on one of the most hallowed of baseball days…Independence Day! (Cue Will Smith whooping the ass of ... read more

Tonight I will attend my last class on World History. I am grateful for the tremendous amount that I have learned within the last 7 weeks, but quite sad at the same time. I am disappointed that I did not know much of what I learned before the class, as I feel that I am not very different from many other people in the United States. I feel that I would have acted very differently over the past 42 years of my life if I were educated to the "real world history" earlier in my life. I feel that the information that I have obtained over the past 7 weeks will make me a more qulified voter, a better citizen and more importantly an enlightened human being. I now realize the importance of learning history and ... read more

I recently started at a new location at work in Bala Cynwood. This is a very expensive and busy neighborhood to live in. For example around the corner from my location there is a car dealer that sells Bently's (WOW!!!). That's $350,000.00 if u did not know. I really like the store I see Charles Barkley almost everday shopping there. The employees are great and the customers are nice as well. A lot of opportunity with developing the store and the staff but after some time the store will be running to 100% efficency.... read more

I have never had a web page before and honestly have never blogged. I am currently in a world history class. I am a working student. My professor wants the class to write at least once a week, and give our thoughts about the culture around us. I am not really sure exactly what it is that she wants, so at the moment I will just write about my work culture. I work for a convenience chain located on the east coast (5 states). The companies name is Wawa. ( which is a Native American word meaning Canadian goose, which is our symbol) We have a culture that is specific to our stores. There are 550 of them, and customers refer to the stores that they visit as "My Wawa" Before I was an employee of ... read more

A few weeks ago, out of the blue, I mentioned to my 16 and 13 year old that I was taking them to do some community service work at a local nursing home and to be ready and in the car in 10 minutes. They were not all that thrilled but I assured them that although we didn't know any of the residents there, this would help them with their communication skills, blah, blah, blah. We loaded in the car for our excursion and before we knew it we were there. I decided to start on the top floor (which was the 4th) and we made our way around the circular building, entering room after room bringing joy to those we came in contact. My children soon began to loosen up and really got into it, ... read more

Well, tonight is my last night in Philly before leaving for Semester at Sea. I can't believe I'm really going. I'm a little excited and incredibly nervous, but I hear from everyone that it's such a great time. I will see a lot of places that I'll probably never see again. I'll miss everyone and the U.S., of course. I should land in San Diego by about 10:30AM their time. Just keep checking this to see what I've been up to and I'll post some pictures that I take as well. I'll update as much as I can. Don't forget about me, and I'll see you when I get back! ... read more
