While on our trip out west earlier this year, my husband and I made a point to stop and visit Tillamook, Oregon then travel on a little southward to Myers Flat, California. We selected the former because we love to go on factory tours and we had heard about the Tillamook Cheese Factory nearby. Though many of the tours that we have gone on since our honeymoon have been brief and short, this one was impressively thorough. We met at the gift shop as the tour group assembled, where we were invited to sample all different kinds of cheeses created and sold by Tillamook. The white cheddar was one of our favorites, as was the creamy spread served with hot pepper jelly and crackers. Once everyone had arrived, we moved into a small amphitheater, where we ... read more

Geo: 45.4564, -123.843Today we were off to visit a massive flying boat- after our recent stops you might be thinking that a flying boat would be a Homer Simpson idea, or a napkin sketch from the Salem Insane Asylum, but it was a U.S. government sanctioned project that was led by the notorious Howard Hughes. The ship convoy losses resulting from German U-Boat attacks motivated a number of off-the-wall ideas but this might have been the biggest one. The original idea for the flying boat actually came from Henry Kaiser (head of one of the largest shipbuilding firms of the time)- Kaiser thought a ship that could fly over the danger might be the answer.Howard Hughes was known as an innovator in aircraft construction and design. These two men would launch the venture to build the ... read more

We arrived at Cape Lookout State Park on the Oregon Coast in the late afternoon. We were pleased to find our Yurt was heated, roomy and with comfortable beds. This is our first experience with Yurts, but knowing the NW weather we felt that we would most likely get rained out in our tent and we were right. Today we went into Tillamook (pop. 4,400) We visited the Tillamook Cheese Factory, a couple of thrift shops and an antique store. While at the cheese factory we learned the history of Tillamook as the two are synonymous. Early settlers arrived and found the only thing they could produce in this wet green climate was butter. Over-production of butter led them to look for another outlet for all that bovine milk. They began producing cheddar cheese and exporting ... read more

Today, we went from southern Oregon to northern Oregon. We arrived in Wheeler around 5pm. Wheeler is a tiny town-- and we mean tiny. There are hardly any shops in town, and pretty much everything closes up at 5pm, so there was nothing for us to do. We had to drive to another town to find dinner. At least our hotel was nice. It was a remodeled 1920s building, and had antique decor. The lady who ran the inn was very nice, and even put our name on our room door to welcome us. There were also DVDs you could borrow and watch in your room. ... read more

Sept 20th 2009 While being encouraged by V liking travel, we are also trying to embrace the last few weekends where we may be having some sun. Added to that K was not “on-call”. Most importantly our friends from Chicago- Janani & Sudharshan were visiting. So we wanted to show them the glory and beauty of Oregon. Originally we had planned to go to the Silver Falls State Park . We skipped it because KK had taken them on too tough a trial through Mt. Hood the previous day. Added to that, our whole family was down with a runny nose and we did not think we would do justice to the place. This was something that we also thought of visiting during the long weekend but did not because of the bad weather. And we ... read more

We started today with a few prayers at the Sacred Heart Church, the local Catholic Church. We then headed to Tillamook Cheese Company for a tour and tasting. The cheese factory was not producing cheese, since it was Sunday, but we were able to see them packing the cheese and get to taste test some of their varieties. My favorite was the extra sharp cheddar. We also got ourselves some Tillamook Ice Cream, which was AWESOME! I had Udderly Chocolate Brown Cow in a waffle cone. It was choc ice cream with white chocolate swirls and choc chunks... After our dairy fix, we headed up the Oregon Coast to Twin Rocks. We skirted down a side street and got to a beach access path. At the end of the path, I saw the Pacific Ocean ... read more

We ended up camped at a mostly shut down campsite which was a little off the beaten track. It was located next to the river which made for a nice solitude atmosphere. I could not find the mountain biking trails that the AAA book suggested were located there, so off into the rain it was to visit the Tillamook cheese factory which was not cheesy at all, pun intended. No we saw the main cheddar line where the machines and peoplepower make it all happen! There was a big cheese conveyor belt with people in their white overalls checking the cheese weight and packing quality. Cool! Cruised further down the coast taking in what we could see of the sights considering the weather was stormy. The coast is rugged and wild but so scenic and beautiful ... read more
