Geo: 44.0472, -123.02When we first started planning this roadtrip, DH had expressed serious interest in only three of the many, many odd ball attractions spread all over the U.S. and Canada: the Lucille Ball Museum in New York, the worlds largest perogy in Saskatchewan, and Springfield Oregon, world famous home of the cartoon Simpsons. Our first crack at her relatively short list wish list (mine sits at 1,857 and growing) was Springfield Oregon. Two TV shows make DH giggle like a teenage girl- Modern Family and The Simpsons, so the idea of going to the home of Homers "Doh!" was high on the list for her. She was hooked after an episode in which Homer, as a coach, started cutting everybody included the voice-over guy who was trying to shush him as the credits rolled- she ... read more

Another summer is upon us and this year the planning started very early. There are only 2 states that I have not stepped foot in. One is Alaska and one is Maine. We decided it was time to make a push for the east coast. We are taking a northern route initially to try and stay as cool as possible. With our trip last year the theme was hot and muggy. This year it will be hot and muggy, but we are trying to keep somewhat cool for as long as possible (I personally could care less if we are hot and muggy). So Maine it is…we will have long days for the first few days and then we will slow down a bit to take in the scenery. The kids are leaving a week early ... read more

Greetings! Once I knew I was moving to China, I often debated when I should write my first entry. Should I start 100 days 'til I leave? 88 days sounds lucky. Eventually, I determined that 46 days was appropriate since it's the day I graduate from the University of Oregon (Home of the Ducks). Graduation is the time the ducklings finally spread their wings and attempt to leave the nest and view the world. Since, I left high school, I haven't seen much of the world (beyond Western Canada, Florida, Hawaii and the Western United States). I longed to study abroad in the UK or China, yet never had the funds to support such a goal. It wasn't until recently, I learned that I could get paid to teach abroad. It was that very idea that ... read more

Another summer is in full swing and once again we are preparing for another road trip. 21 days of pure bliss! This is a trip that we had planned two years ago, but decided to scratch it due to the heat. Well this year we decided to take the bull by the horns and go for it…drought conditions, wildfires, flooding and all! This year the route will take us to 14 states, 4 National Parks, 12 National Historic Sites, 1 Brewery, 3 Museums, 1 Tabasco Plant, 2 Plantations, 1 Alligator Farm, 1 Kings Mansion and a whole lot of National Forests (including the Ozarks). The house sitter is waiting in the wings and I am filling out “Do Not Forget” lists like crazy…ahhh…let the packing begin!... read more

I decided it was time to go for a hike since it has been awhile. I read an article in the Register Guard about Horse Rock Mountain. It seemed ideal since it was so close to home. I was surprised I hadn't heard about it! We started out at a brisk pace since it was only 1.5 miles in to the summit. I noticed early on I was huffing and puffing.....I haven't been out in awhile, eh???? It is a slow steady climb up through the forest canopy and 161 steps over fallen trees. You emerge after about .7 mile onto a beautiful meadow filled with many flowers. You walk leisurely through the meadow and head up onto a bluff. From this view you can see the Three Sisters and Mt. Jefferson on a good clear ... read more
