Saturday, October 18, 2008 Morning fog lifted enough to reveal the wild shore line as we travelled north along the Oregon coast. Every video clip we took had the background surf to complete the atmosphere. The sound and sight of the surf varied with each stop, sometimes pounding, sometimes just rolling. There were several overlooks where the sea shore was just too far away and shrouded in fog. But we found a couple to compensate. At Bandon, Face Rock State Park and north of Coos Bay at Oregon Dunes Overview we stayed long enough in the cool wind to breathe in the air and soak up the wild feeling of the coast. Sea stacks defending themselves against the surf, wide and long sandy beaches, sea grass growing out of the sand and waving in the wind, ... read more

The third day of our roadtrip dawned fine and sunny again and the wind of Sunday was not present. The motel in Crescent City as just passable, not flash but el cheapo!! We headed north on 101 but had only travelled a couple of blocks and a warning bell sounded in the car and a light came on the dashboard. We didnt know where the next Dollar Renta Car would be and as it is a public holiday we didnt expect the Dodge dealer,if there was one in Crescent City,to be open to tell us it all meant. So Gretchen phoned the 0800 number on the rebtal agreement and hey presto the answer was low tire pressure. So into a gas station and air in all four tires even though we had no idea how much each tire should have as ... read more

Well we experienced the notorious Pacific Northwest Fog today. We woke up to a cold foggy morning in Lincoln City. We’re sorry there weren’t many pictures from yesterday. Lincoln city didn’t have too many picturesque moments and unfortunately the morning didn’t offer many more either. We were surrounded by fog until about noontime, which was just in time for when we came across a great overlook spot somewhere near Cape Perpetua, OR. Huge waves were crashing over these rocks that we could walk right out on. Pretty amazing. From there, we decided to shoot for Florence, OR. The drive on the way there was perfect. The fog was gone and the sun was out. There were more great viewpoints and some scary driving conditions. Real fun though. Florence, OR was surprisingly nice. There was a quaint ... read more

6/30-7/1/2008 We arrived in Florence the night of the 30th and camped outside of it. We decided to stay a second night which was nice to stay in one place for a while. Florence was a cute oceanside town. We went on a hike to the light house, which was very pretty. We also visited the Sea Lion Cave which is the largest sea cave in the world! There were tons of sea lions. That night we shopped in old town Florence and ate dinner in a good sea food restraunte. The camp site was next to the ocean so we were swimming again. The water wasn't as cold but it was still pretty bad. My brother and I even found some sand dollars! Katie... read more

It was November and Seattle had started to get cold. That weekend, few friends at office and I decided to head to Florence, Oregon. We were to hire a car and drive down to Florence. But, by the time we got the car and started from Seattle , it was pretty late. Since it is almost a 4 hour drive to Portland and we had started late, we figured out that if we were to find a place to stay that night, it had to be somewhere between Seattle and Portland. So we checked in at a hotel for that night. The next morning, we started towards Multnomah falls, on the way to Florence. We reached there around 12:30 pm. I will be frank here – there are many more beautiful waterfalls in the South of ... read more

On March 7, 1778 the great British navigator Captain James Cook, having sailed from the Hawaiian Islands (which he had just discovered), made his first sighting of the northwest coast of America. It was a promontory rising abruptly some 500 feet above the rocky shoreline, about 10 miles north of what is now Newport on the central Oregon coast. He named the point Cape Foulweather in reference to the intense storm raging at the time he arrived. The accounts of his voyage brought Oregon to the attention of adventurous explorers and fur traders, and marked the beginning of the American phase of Oregon history. Today the Cape is a popular observation point where visitors can watch passing whales, sea lions and seals basking on the rocks and nesting sea birds, not to mention the spectacular coastline ... read more

Depoe Bay, a very picturesque little town located on the Oregon coast about 10 miles north of Newport, is home to what is said to be the world's smallest year-round navigable harbor. Cut into the coastal basalt rock by millions of years of pounding surf, the tiny harbor is connected to the Pacific Ocean by a narrow passage through the rocks. Onlookers gather on the highway 101 bridge to watch as boats thread their way (locally called “shooting the hole”) through the 150-yard long and 50-foot wide passage with 2 doglegs and a 42-foot overhead clearance under the bridge. With a little wind and high surf, this can get to be a pretty exciting passage, and vessels sometimes rattle their way through, bouncing off rocks like they were in a pinball machine. Migrating whales pass by ... read more

Well. I have finally come to terms with something… I am NOT a camping, “roughing it”, type person. I am a hair product, toe nail painting, hair drying marathon, four different outfit changes, big sunglasses wearing type girl. It does sadden me this sudden realization, but I guess it’s time for me to stop living in a bubble and accept the cold hard truth, I’m a girly girl. There I said it! Now, with that off my chest I can proceed with the trials and tribulations that I call my life. May 24, Wednesday To continue with the bad weather theme, we woke up to cold, gray and rainy. We drove from Bend, Oregon south westish to Crater Lake National Park. While driving toward Crater Lake, we watched the temperature go from 55 degrees and continue ... read more

Hi everyone, Well we did not exactly find the sun but we did come across the Pacific Ocean. We are spending the night in Florence, Oregon right on the beach. The ocean is so beautiful. It's weird to think that we live so close to the Atlantic and right now I am writing to you steps from the Pacific Ocean. We have decided to stay another night here in Florence so that we can have a slight respite from setting up and breaking down our gear. We are ahead of schedule so we are taking our time throughout Oregon. The weather has been really rainy and damp but we are making the best of it. It seems like the sun is trying to break out so we will walk down to the beach just to relax ... read more

Greetings from Florence! I certainly can't complain about some of the perks of my job. I'm spending four days this week on the central Oregon Coast in the small town of Florence. When I'm not conducting training, I get to explore. So this morning, I drove south to the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area and spent some time walking the dunes and gazing at the ocean. I brought my recently acquired digital camera with me to test it out before the trip to Italy. I can't believe the unusally mild weather we've enjoyed all winter here in Oregon. I stopped for brunch on my way back into town, but alas, no green eggs for me today! From my motel room, I have a terrific view of the Siuslaw River Bridge designed by Conde McCullough. It was constructed ... read more
