Well. I have finally come to terms with something… I am NOT a camping, “roughing it”, type person. I am a hair product, toe nail painting, hair drying marathon, four different outfit changes, big sunglasses wearing type girl. It does sadden me this sudden realization, but I guess it’s time for me to stop living in a bubble and accept the cold hard truth, I’m a girly girl. There I said it! Now, with that off my chest I can proceed with the trials and tribulations that I call my life.
May 24, Wednesday
To continue with the bad weather theme, we woke up to cold, gray and rainy. We drove from Bend, Oregon south westish to Crater Lake National Park. While driving toward Crater Lake, we watched the temperature go from 55 degrees and continue dropping to about 35 degrees! Oh sooo warm! It wouldn’t be until it started snowing that I decided to forgo the flip flops and change into shoes, needless to say my day was almost ruined right there.
About Crater Lake…. It is now an inactive volcano, during it’s last eruption it caved in and now it the top of the mountain forms a lake,
hence, Crater Lake. This mountain in Oregon gets more snow then anywhere in the North West. The snow at the bottom of the mountain was about 2 feet deep, but while driving up the mountain we easily say depths of 10 feet! The whole drive around the rim is not open the public yet, apparently snow removal is slow up there, as they report that ¼ of a mile in one day is a lot of progress!
The top of the mountain was completely snow capped. The view of the lake was amazing. The color of the water is bluer then anything I have ever seen. When we first got up there it was really cloudy and you really had to look hard to see the lake, but the Sun God was apparently on my side, and it cleared up just long enough for me to get some great pictures. (Once we got to the bottom of the mountain the temperature had gone up almost 30 degrees!)
The drive from Crater Lake to Grants Pass was amazing, but sad. I have never seen so many log trucks in my life. I must have lost count after 40! As beautiful
as the landscape was you could also see barren mountains were forests used to. I realize that logging is an important and essential part of life, but never have understood why there is such a need to recycle after seeing such stripped areas of land.
We stayed in Grants Pass, Oregon that night. Once again we were the only campers and stayed right next to a river, and all the lovely bugs came out to eat me alive! But the good news is that no furry woodlands creatures have come out to get us… yet!
May 25, Thursday.
A very late start to the day had us leaving the site at 11:30ish, as I’m an internet junkie, Laura waited patiently for me to get my fix for the day. We drove from Grants Pass, OR to the coast of Oregon. We drove up along the coast for part of the day, checked out the National Sand Dunes and then decided on the spectacular town of Florence as the place to call come for the night. We were two blocks from the beach. The coast is amazing here. It reminds me a lot of Maine, a rocky shore line
oregon coast.
photo: laura. and long sand beaches. More specifically, this area reminds me of Hermit Island, Maine. There was so much drift wood on the shore. Not just small pieces, but actually huge trees all over some parts of the beach. I have never seen anything like that before.
So as always, the night went from great, after watching the sun start to set on the ocean, to bad, due to the down pours that continued all night long. At some points it was raining so hard, I woke from a sound sleep!
May 26, Friday
I woke up this morning dry, thankfully, but with puddles at the entrance to the tent! Forecast for the next few days??? RAIN, why would it be anything else?????
I would just like to say that I am now convinced that I have done something bad and the Karma Gods are getting back at me in the best way possible, making me miss out on the chance to lay on the beach and listen to the waves. As a result of this belief I have been going out of my way (picking up trash, smiling extra, random acts of kindness, blah blah blah)
in hopes to get some positive Karma to come my way. Wish me luck.
