The third day of our roadtrip dawned fine and sunny again and the wind of Sunday was not present. The motel in Crescent City as just passable, not flash but el cheapo!!
We headed north on 101 but had only travelled a couple of blocks and a warning bell sounded in the car and a light came on the dashboard. We didnt know where the next Dollar Renta Car would be and as it is a public holiday we didnt expect the Dodge dealer,if there was one in Crescent City,to be open to tell us it all meant. So Gretchen phoned the 0800 number on the rebtal agreement and hey presto the answer was low tire pressure. So into a gas station and air in all four tires even though we had no idea how much each tire should have as we didnt have a manual nor a pressure guage to find out which tire was low or all four.So we took a guess and started the Dodge up and again hey presto no warning bell or light.Mechanic Gretchen really came into her own.....again.
We drove on north thru Brookings with a stop at Harris Beach where there were people playing on the beach but no one in the freezing water made cold by the Alaska current that hugs the Oregon shore into California.
At the parking spot where the tallest bridge in Oregon at 324 feet abve a river we headed off downhill thru the douglas firs to get piccies of the bridge which was very impressive.
The traffic was quiet for the most part and one of the good things is that trucks are almost non existant on 101.Plenty of caravans and motor homes but they all travel at 55mph and one rarely needs to overtake even on the gentle inclines.
We drove out to Cape Sebastion and took in the deserted but beautiful coastline from an elevated position.
Onto Gold Beach for lunch and watched fishermen in boats puttering up and down the Rogue River fishing we assumed for salmon.Didnt see one caught before it was time to move on.The travel guide had talked about huts for homeless cats at our lunch spot and sure enough they were there but no cats at lunchtime.Gretchen snapped off a picture anyway.
Next was '"The port of Port Orford'...yes that what all the signs in town say.The port isnt actually a port as there are no wharves but they do have a fishing fleet which pull up to a jetty where the boats are pulled out of the sea by a crane.Very ingenious and efficient.
Cape Blanco was next and a trip up a working lighthouse originally constructed in 1870.Again very interesting and informative volunteers who answered all the questions.Apparently on that part of the coast there is a spot where there are 11 Government ariels of which the guy knew what 7 were for but not the other 4.9/11 is still very much in mind in this country even miles away from NY.
On thru the biggest town on the coast of Coos Bay and to our nightime stop at Florence.
Gretchen bolled into the office of the Old Town Inn with her discount voucher at $44 to find the woman before her had paid $86 without voucher !!! We thought about setting up a stall outside the motel and sell vouchers to others coming in to get the best deal and in the process pay for our night !!!
After a dinner of seafood ( no freezer meals tonight) we took a stroll thu town checking the gas prices for when we fill up tomorrow.A range over 30cents per gallon means there is plenty of competion in this town.
