Asheville, NC---Most American cities are struggling to regain a "certain cache" and economic base. Asheville, NC is another such town on the cusp of becoming very special. Among the highlights for us was a visit to some great galleries. One, A Boy and His Dog Fine Art Gallery, landed us a sneak preview of the upcoming Steve Tracy show. Steve himself was there and we had quite a visit. Steve's recent fall scenes of the Asheville area are wonderful; as are his New York series. The gallery, located on Patton Ave., is “not to be missed” if art is your thing. Gallery manager Gary Muzechuk, our informative and gracious host, used rheostats in a darkened room to give us a wonderful "light play" demonstration of a colorful local fall scene painted (single and diptych) by Steve. ... read more

Asheville, NC --- This little corner of North Carolina near the Tennesee border is beautiful; a fact not lost on George Vanderbilt, who built his stunning and LARGE retreat near Asheville. It rivals other massive and elaborate American and European homes we have oogled. The landscaping, by Frederick Law Olmsted, is amazing and true to its original design. The house tour is very well organized, we opted for earphones and a recorded tour and are happy we did. We had lunch at the Bistro on the grounds of the estate near the winery. An interesting winery tour and wine tasting were included in our two day pass. The gardens were still beautiful in early November; although they must be smashing here in June! The gardeners and floral staff were busily getting ready for Christmas. When you ... read more

The ride from DC to Lake Norman (near Mooresville, NC) was shrouded in mist; but the beaurtufl fall foliage managed to peek through. Virginia was beautiful; but no stopping for us. Sometime we should plan to stop at Old Town Alexandria; but not this trip. The dam that created Lake Norman was built in the early 60s and the homes are newish and stylish. We went with Cindy to pick up Ray at the Charlotte Airport (about a half hour drive). We've been in the Charlotte Airport many times on layovers; so, it was interesting to see it from the "non-secure side." The four of us went to Davidson, NC to the Brick House for a great dinner prededed by a drive trhough of this nice, "traditional looking" small town. The town reminded me of the ... read more

Drove down to Wayneville, NC for a week in the Smoky Mountains. We rented a cabin in the hills overlooking Maggie Valley which is about 45 minutes west of Ashville. Had quite a bit of rain but fortunately we had clear day for long ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The fall colors are coming out and were in full swing on the Blue Ridge Parkway some of which was over 6000 ft. Also, took a ride over to Cherokee which is Indian Reversation. It had the obligatory casino and also the obligatory cigarette smoke! Run for your life!! We also spent a day at the Biltmore Estate which was built by the Vanderbilts around 1900. Besides this 250 room mansion, he also owned thousands of acres in this area. I would say this rivals Hearst ... read more

We drove the last few miles to the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway and ended up at the gates of the Smokey Mountain National park. Just outside the park is Cherokee, home to the legendary tribe. (The Chief’s grandfather sends his regards Dad and said hope your scalp has healed). We parked up for the night in a National Park and went for a short walk, no electric, water, internet nothing but mountains, trees and rivers. Trust this night to be the coldest yet. Multiple layers of clothing do not make up for central heating. But it was lovely. (All the other RV’ers seemed to be cooking over open fires, seemed funny when we all had perfectly good gas cookers and microwaves, or maybe we missed the point). The next day we had to slightly ... read more

September 1st 2009 Curled up on the porch at the Mountain Light Sanctuary near Asheville, North Carolina and reflecting on the past two weeks since I left Little Rock, Arkansas, I am stunned to realise quite how much has happened. How on earth can I condense it into just a few short paragraphs? Well, here goes… You can kill the dreamer, but you will never kill the dream Arriving in Tennessee from the West, you cross the Mississippi river on the Hernando De Soto Bridge, and are treated to a momentary glimpse of Memphis’s downtown skyline running along the east bank of the mighty river. To your left a huge glass pyramid adorns the horizon, ‘a symbolic link to Egypt’s Nile Delta’ (I stole that line from the Rough Guide to the USA, p.550). I didn’t ... read more

This morning, Marce woke up to locally-roasted, freshly-ground organic coffee beans in the super cool grinder provided to us by our Firestone hosts. After Allen lazily rolled out of bed, we went for breakfast at the Sunny Point Cafe in West Asheville. Despite the half-hour wait, the orange corn-bread pancakes, chicken sandwich special and chipotle omelette croissant exceeded expectations and sealed the deal for a return trip. We left with full happy tummies to explore the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. At the door, we were greeted by happy trolley tour people and a vast collection of brochures ranging from sporting and healing to events and relocation guides. Leaving our car safely parked with a breath-taking view of the mountains, we set off on foot towards Downtown. Our first stop was the Basilica St. Lawrence, ... read more

We heard so many stories, so many opinions, so many people who said, "You HAVE to go to Asheville!" When Allen asked me a week ago if I wanted to go on a road trip, I didn't hesitate. At that moment, our getaway became what we have called a "Yes Trip." Anything that comes our way, we have vowed to greet with open arms. Having left our puppy, Misma, in the warm and loving care of Guille and Cris, we set off on our adventure. During the beautiful four hour drive, Allen connected his phone to Wikipedia and we revived an old tradition from our touring days. We took some time to read up on our new destination and learn as much as we could to help us provide context for the world we were about ... read more

Later in July we attended another great Dorsey family reunion. This year it was held at the Asheville Crowne Plaza in Asheville, North Carolina. It was well attended by three generations from the Lamar and Nell Dorsey family. Christi and her kids were able to join the crowd this year. It was great to see all the cousins. On the first day the men played golf at the Reems Creek Golf Course. The competition was fierce as in prior years. This year Mike Leveille won first place and was awarded the famous "Dorsey Cup." During the reunion we had fun visiting with family around the pool and in the official meeting place, Dianne’s room. We met for dinner and awards ceremony at Frankie Bones Restaurant. It was the perfect place to have this dinner. Food was ... read more
