New York City: born there, went to work with mom and dad there, worked there, took some classes there, lived there, etc. Yet, after spending most of my 34+ years in and around New York, I've taken a lot for granted. If you ask me to identify my favorite city, I would immediately state New York City without blinking twice. I love the different neighborhoods, quality of cuisine and nightlife, the parks, mass transit, the skyscrapers, etc. There is still SO MUCH I have not seen. I had planned spending the weekend in the NYC, but because of unforeseen expenses this past Friday morning, I spent Saturday at home and missed out on seeing a cool show (Evil Dead: The Musical) with Alvin and his crew. At 740am today, I took the 2-minute walk from my ... read more

So I believe I spent most of my last entry describing a typical suburban environment...I'll now let you in on the secrets of an average weekend here in Larchmont. The eldest girl, Sophie, has 4 'playdates' in a row, which is quite a number for a 7 year old to handle. 2 are birthday paries and involve numerous party favours and so much candy that she doesn't stop buzzing all afternoon...the boys, 5 and 3, are entertained by their father with lively games such as 'lets-see-how-many-times-we-can-do-a-flip-in-a-row'...and the overwhelmed babysitter retreats to the local park, where she climbs a tree (much to the shock of innocent joggers - "Darling what do you spose is in that tr...oh my god it's a person! Um, hi! What are you doing?!") and finds snow on the beach (how weird!). The ... read more

The end of the Summer holidays is nigh (though Ivor has already been back for a week of training days!!) and I went off to New York to meet my mum.............yes it is 10,329 miles (16,623 kilometres ) from Hobart (.........and why not meet somewhere mid-way??, I hear you cry) but for a variety of reasons, our last trip was aborted -and we thought that if we didn't go back now, we never would. Needless to say, after 8 plane journeys and over 44 hours of flight time/ more than 60 hours travelling (return) - it was a bloody long way to go from here!!! I think my Aussie friends/collegues thought I was cracking up "You're from the UK.........living in Aus........and you want to go to New York from here?? In the space of 48 hours ... read more

On 2nd January 2007 short flight from Miami to New York. Fantastic, chilly but wrapped up warm ready for the shopping frenzy ahead. Staying on 55th street 7th Avenue so very good location. Saw the 'Big Christmas Tree' in 'Home Alone New York'! Amazing. Also, went to Ground Zero - very moving, boat trip by Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Shopaholics paradise! Just as well we were only there for four days!... read more

So... I'm back, in NYC. The last few days in HCMC, I didn't do much. Just walked around the city during the day, and went to some clubs at night. I think the city was really starting to grow on me when I had to leave. Maybe it's because I got used to the crazy traffic. Maybe it's because everyone there around me looked like me (she said I looked like a Vietnamese, I will remember that). Maybe it's because the drinks are so damn cheap at the bars that I can drink Black Label every night and not have a hangover the next day (it is now officially my drink of choice). Maybe it's because I met some genuinely nice people during those last few days (I still got my share of annoying people who ... read more

Many of you have asked why the blog has been so quiet and well I have actually been hiding out in the US for a week now surprising people with an early arrival all over new england. sneaky huh? last weekend i got a surprise when i was in bombay and decided to just check my ticket one more time to make sure my plans for traveling were okay. i looked closely and despite having an american airlines ticket home i realized i was flying british airways out of india. well they are on a massive strike with over 2000 flights cancelled and after visiting their office they informed me i could choose to be out on a flight in 2 days before the strike or see what happens...my adventurous self was quickly bound and gagged ... read more

So this is suburban USA...wide roads so that the huge landrovers which have never and will never see off road terrain don't hit each other as they glide gently along with their leather seats full of 3 year olds...houses that look like they've each been individually designed, with attention to every detail...blocks lined with functional furniture shops (and the occasional webkinz store...if you're really curious enough to wonder what webkinz are, you'll google it - man will you be surprised!)...this is my home. At least until 16th Feb! I'm having a wail of a time - wail, however, is the operative word, as these kids do nothing but that! Today was especially trying for some reason, and I'm looking forward to everyone going back to school tomorrow (except for Charlie, the blonde and bouncing 3 year ... read more

Am really bored here awaiting '''''''my flight to Orlando - so I decided to have a go at penning a Frank O'Hara type poem .. new york city skyline: a graphic equalizer boom boom B B boom and you in my heart like music only listening to itself, only loving itself and me still thinking of you, still loving you, even though our conversations are as one-sided as the letter of wind slapping back from the Atlantic, even though changing is as impossible for you as for the glass eater at Coney Island lunching only on lightbulbs, even though giving for you is only good when your light offers itself back in its truth as a tangerine moon to the neon streets. yes, for you, everything enfolds inwards. yet when you smile- the yellow flash of ... read more

It's late in Brooklyn, but I just had to say a few words of farewell about this my favourite city after what has been another spectacular day - a day of fire-eaters, rollercoasters and tangerine-coloured moons. I'm not exaggerrating either. Travelling to Coney Island this afternoon (way out past Avenue Q!), I nearly had a photographer's orgasm. I mean that place is visual gold dust - weaving skeletons of defunct/ temporarily resting rides, lurid clam cafe signs and mile after mile of school buses apparently on vacation. I shot some much film and thoroughly enjoyed every minute, despite the absolute sheet of wind coming off the Atlantic. The light was so splendid and even that I couldn't have had it better. T The small museum there is really amazing too - full of signs about now ... read more
