The Highline
Jan 16 2016 426 On HIghline, New York Geo: 40.7528, -73.9853
The two families separated again this morning as the others missed seeing the Air and Space Museum as they were shopping. While they did that, we spent our morning walking the Highline. While very cold, it was also very enjoyable, with interesting views in lots of places.
We got off near Greenwich Village and had a stroll around that area and then went into Washington Square Park. We just loved the little parks all around the city. Our next stop was David Bowie's apartment. He had only just passed away a few days before, so we got to see the vast array of flowers and trinkets placed outside. Very sad.
We were quite close to the famous Katz Deli so thought of having lunch there – until we saw the ridiculous queue in the bitter cold. We instead headed by to Bryant Park as we loved it when we had seen it a few evenings ago. We had lunch at Celsius, their restaurant overlooking the skating rink.
At this point we met up with S and J and their boys. We had prepurchased express walk up tickets to the Empire State Building before we left Australia and still
Washington Square Park
Jan 16 2016 456 Washington Square Park Greenwich, New York hadn't been up. The forecast for today had been for a sunnyish day, which it was, so the decision was made to go up shortly before sunset so that we could see New York by night as well. We had already had an amazing daytime view at Top of the Rock.
Unfortunately, our plans didn't go well as just as we headed to ESB, it started to snow! We certainly didn't need express passes, I seriously don't think there was anyone else there. We were up in no-time and the view was still amazing. There was no sunset, but the light snow and the New York lights were very special. As I said, there was no-one else there, so the security guards joined in with us in an impromptu snowball fight. It wasn't quite the ESB experience we had planned, but I don't think many people get a snowball fight up there!
Our final New York dinner was unfortunately the worst meal of our trip. We ate at O'Brien's Irish Pub near Times Square (yes, I know, I know). The food wasn't good and one meal just simply never turned up. We left and spent some time in Times Square seeing
Memorial to David Bowie
Jan 16 2016 467 David Bowie Memorial, New York it by night. We were all hungry so we also had our only McDonalds fix for the trip. Again, this must be the worst McDonalds we have every eaten, anywhere in the world. The Trip Advisor experts who said not to eat near Times Square certainly got that right!
We had a final drink at the Monkey Bar in our hotel before bed.
