On the wooden elevators at Macy'sSlept in this morning and then started the tedious task of packing bags for our flight tomorrow to San Francisco. We purchased two new roll along travel bags from Macy's for our extra luggage. They are a great idea - roll up into a sleeping bag size carry bag when not in use so good for storing.
When shopping in Macy's you can get a 10 per cent discount card if you are from outside of the United States. Just pick up discount card from the visitor centre in store and the discount is good for 30 days. Macy's in Herald Square consists of 2 buildings - 9 floors of clothes shopping in both buildings.
We have been putting off going to Times Square since we arrived in NYC so today was the day to bite the bullet and go! I call Times Square - New Yorks answer to Las Vegas - personally I find it tacky, cheap and full of hustlers trying to take advantage of tourists.
Speaking of ripping off tourists - there was a guy dressed up as the Statue of liberty - right in the centre of Times Square - some poor unsuspecting tourists
Macy's herald square NYCtook a photo of one of the group standing next to the guy in the costume - then the guy insisted they hand over $10 for the privlige. I just find that so rude - you would think a couple of dollars would have been enough..well those poor tourists certainly learnt a hard NY lesson today.
That said I will never forget the first time we saw Times Square - we got off a train in 2011 - walked up the stairs and were totally blown away by the electrifying colours that surrounded us - it certainly was a sight to see. Of course you have to see Times Square once but that is probably enough for me!
Visited the Hard Rock Cafe, the M&M store and had a casual walk around the area. As we suspected Times Square area was packed - not a lot of room to move sideways. We headed off Broadway down towards the Rockefeller Center were we had lunch at the Potbelly Sandwich Shop - similar to a subway shop. Food was good and Geoff treated himself to an Oreo milkshake - complete with miniature oreo's on the side!
We went past
Times SquareRadio City Hall - home of the Rockettes but the place was closed - NYC is starting to get ready for the holiday season - lights are being strung up around the Rockefeller Centre and Radio City.
On our way back to the hostel tonight we saw a familiar sign "pie face". Inside the shop, on the wall read - pies from down under". We grabbed a sausage roll - tasted fantastic - been a long time since we had some Aussie food - the lamingtons looked awesome too.
It's been an easy day - ready now to move on but take with us so many fond memories of this diverse city - rest assured we will be back - January 2015 and yes we will definitely be staying at the Urban Oasis - in fact as January and February are the off peak months - rooms will be as cheap as $100 per night (this visit we paid $165 per night and thought that was a bargain).
Our next blog will be from San Francisco - look forward to blogging from our last destination before returning home to Australia.
😊
