Il a ... read more

Félix... read more

After we stayed Thursday night in Santa Rosa, we started after a nice breakfast in the nice motel and headed north. Already after a couple of miles we fell in love with New Mexico. The scenery... so much different than anything we know from Germany or South Carolina. A decision was make quickly that we want to spend more time here. OK, so exit the interstate I-25 (which we were heading north) and into the mountains. First stop in Las Vegas, NM. Get your picture of the "real" Las Vegas out of your head, the Las Vegas in NM is so much like a small town in Mexico, no tourists, but cute downtown area, a park, some small stores. We strolled around a little bit, and had a coffee in a small cafe, which is owned ... read more

The sun's rays come streaming down through empty sky, thunderclouds and aspen leaves - and strike an ant next to me scurrying about for its morning meal coffee black as night on my other side the sound of the ocean lapping with the wind in the trees Thunder rumble approaching tumbling nearer clouds swell, the ocean swells the sun's rays disappear A drop of rain strikes my nose like a river to the sea the rain unto me Hello out there in e-land! Taos is an eating extravaganza, and our plans were no different. We had limited time and lots to do. 1st eating sopapillas at Michaels along with Huevos Rancheros and a fresh green chili sauce, then a walk around the plaza to look for either a coyote or kokopelli sculpture for the backyard like we saw about 20 years ago. Wonder why we couldn’t find it or the store carrying the plate that we wanted to buy more of? After walking off breakfast the sky was so beautiful we had to go down to St. Frances of Assisi’s and shoot some photos. I still haven’t done anything with my China photos so had to delete some photos from the camera card on the spot and make room for more photos. I’d forgotten to pack my poor old ... read more

We got into Santa Fe about 3:30. We hurridly called Maroe, our shuttle driver, and he took us to Canyon Road, the place to find a concentration of art. Well, we went in gallery after gallery and decided there was no way to even begin to see them all so we got a recommendation for a place the locals gather. We discovered La Farola, a tapas bar, where we sat right down and met some interesting folks. I could not even understand the menu offerings so we opted for the recommendation of a great new friend, Bayla, who lives in DC and Santa Fe. Casa Sena was the place she sent us and we enjoyed it very much. However, the waiter and waitress are frustrated broadway wannabe’s and again there was a piano player, and they ... read more

Colorado to New Mexico Great Sand Dunes National Park June 11 to June 16 Our second day on the dunes we were lucky, as locals said the wind had been unseasonably strong (evidently it blows a lot in the spring, but usually not so much in the summer); it calmed down substantially and we had a pleasant stroll through the water of Mather creek over to the sand dunes, put our shoes back on (to protect against hot sand), and began our climb up. Climbing a mountain of sand is tricky when it is steep. We walked across some ridges, but at a certain point we were going to be faced with a steep slope of loose sand no matter where we headed. You scramble up as fast as you can, because you are losing ground ... read more

Dear Blogifiles, We are willing to bet that no one reading this has ever been to Elkhart, Kansas...right? And, on a whim of sorts, we ended up there to get to Cimarron Nat'l Grasslands. It was a bumpy 4 miles on a dirt road across prairie grassland, a few oil wells, windmills, cattle, sagebrush, and some tumbling tumbleweeds. When we finally arrived (after every cupboard being tossed into chaos and a few fillings missing) we were greeted with the most incredible sunset across this wide open sky of skies. There was nothing there except 2 pit toilets and a place to camp. For $3.50 with our Golden Age Passport it was a bargain. Not a sound could be heard and we were as close to being settlers in our connistoga wagon traveling on the Cimarron Trail ... read more
