Roswell!!!!!!! The town where in 1947 an alien spacecraft crash landed with the ship and several alien bodies recovered and covered up by the USA military......or maybe where a weather balloon crashed...or a test parachute...... I arrived in Roswell at 4:35am, yup that early. The greyhound terminal consisted of nothing more then a shed and was closed. So began the hike for accomodation. Headed down and then up into and settled on the Days Inn but couldn't check in till later on so had to find somewhere to hang out till something was open. Walked past a big military academy, the thing stretched on for ages and was well facilitated, later on I saw some cadets marching - tho not as part of a line or anything like that, it was like 4 different personal going ... read more

Day 16 On the road again. Left Arizona and are into New Mexico. There are signs cautioning us of dust storms. It sounds like it would be neat, but we really don’t want to be in one. Headed to Roswell. Town is closed, but we’ll get to see some stuff tomorrow. Can’t forget about Scott’s shirt! ... read more

This place is BIG. Before the Big Bend/Marfa diversion, we had planned to go from San Antonio to Amarillo, but as we were close to the border with New Mexico, we thought we'd take another detour. We set out North from Marfa with the intention of reaching Roswell for the night, but after a long day of driving we stopped just short, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Carlsbad is famous for its nearby caverns, but we skipped those, given we're all a bit claustrophobic when it comes to caving, or Spelunking, as they call it here. The highlight for us was the coin laundry (it had been a while!) and buying CJ some new clothes. Either he's grown a lot, or all the tumble-drying has taken its toll on his English clothes. The next day we visited ... read more

We decided to stay at the 1st state park to be added to NM, Bottomless Lakes State Park, tucked in amongst beautiful red bluffs. It is a stark comparison to the otherwise flat lands around Roswell. We went downtown to see the famous UFO’s of Roswell. This is definitely a town holding onto something that happened in 1947. They have several blocks dedicated to the UFO experience and we spent the afternoon checkin’ them out. Our campsite was covered in wildlife tracks so I included some pictures for you, Olen and Michael! We have a great swimming hole here, but it is too cold to swim. At night we saw millions of starts, but no UFO’s. Enjoy! Happy Trails and Peace Out, Tom and Jess ... read more

Fine & Sunny 25c I’m a crazy driver I’ll admit, but I’m not half as crazy as “The Crazy German”. I don’t even remember his name but I remember the situation. The first stop after Lafayette was Galveston, an ageing (but cool in a faded-elegance kinda way) beach city in Texas. I arrived to find any empty dorm room and settled down to the usual routine - search for dinner, have a beer, chat to some people than head back the motel. Only when I headed back to my beachside digs I met ‘The Crazy German’. He’d pulled into the parking lot in a shiny clean Pontiac, nothing strange there.. except the windscreen was missing!! The Crazy German had driven 1000miles from Arizona and was wearing a ski mask and beanie. I asked him what happens ... read more
