We stopped for American breakfast in town and Vincenzo ate 1 out of 3 pancakes. The landscape is much different and the heat is starting to get drier. We stopped in Historic Fort Stockton to check out the fort- the largest statue of a roadrunner was just a bonus. Hunger took over and Israel asked some guy working on a house where a good restaurant was. The guy looked at him blankly so Israel said, "OK, where would YOU eat?" and he gave us directions to La Rosita, even though he told us the wrong name. He must eat there often. It was very pink and decorative and there was music that Israel deemed a propitious with regard to the food. Then we went to the fort and took advantage of the interactive display. As we drove from Dallas to Amarillo along Route 66, everything was exactly as I imagined it would be. The road was long, straight and quiet, passing by cattle ranches, oil derricks and dusty green crop fields. The 'middle-of-nowhere', 'nothing-ever-happens-here' towns we drove through were very Deliverance-esque; there may have been no porch sitting banjo players, but that was simply because there was literally nobody around. At one point, to my great excitement, our car even got hit by tumbleweed; we are definitely in cowboy country! And, as is tradition on an American roadtrip, we got to see one example of a roadside "world's largest" - a huge white cross in the middle of a field. The sign promised spiritual enlightenment, which is exactly why we took our photographs from the car and kept on driving. ... read more

Bottomless Lakes State Park I had to get out an explore this awesome region. I started out in the ecosystem where the Chihuahuan Desert kisses the grasslands at the Bottomless Lakes State Park. It's a great geological area. It is a chain of eight sinkhole lakes ranging from 17-90 feet deep. They were formed when the circulating ground water from the Capitan Mountain range adds into the artesian wells below the surface dissolving the salt and gypsum deposits forming subterranean caverns. With time the cavern extends and the roof collapses and the artesian well fills the sinkhole and whooola holy moly theres a lake!! This area is beautiful with the Capitan and Sierra Blanca Mountains across the plain to the West and a huge ridgeline to the East. The ridge line is a swirl of hues ... read more

Wisconsin to New Mexico in Record Time We have arrived... Chris had to come over the Sacramento Mountains from Alamogorda... and I had a little farther... I made the 1700 mile trek in a record 21 hours. Don't do the math on my miles/hour the Oklahoma State Troopers did that for all of us... Opps, I got off with a warning. I have to thank Erin Doyle and Jon Potter for jaw jacking with me on the trip. Erin was my internet searching vixen giving me the play by play of what was surrounding me as I drove - The Flint Hills National Monument of Kansas and the largest oil field in North America (It's underground can't see it but, my Lord can you smell it)! My favorite was the church built during the grasshopper ... read more

After our episode in Deming we finally left Sunday morning for Roswell. We're not sure what it was we were expecting to find. It's just a small New Mexico town that has an alien/UFO story dating back to 1949. That's it. There is the UFO Museum & Research Center and then there are a few shops that sell alien themed T-shirts, shot glasses and such. I thought the lamp posts were original so please check the photos for one. The museum had a lot of the original newspaper articles from 1949 on display and replicas of crash debris based on descriptions that were given. There was a section about ancient cultures and supposed alien contact which was a different. I think if you're a hardcore believer it would be the place for you but I didn't ... read more

Well, where we last left off, we'd gotten into Farmington, NM, but it was too late in the day to visit Aztec Ruins National Monument. So we went there this morning. It didn't open till 8:00, so we had breakfast a diner next to the hotel, then headed over. Actions tend to have equal and opposite reactions, and since we were originally planning on leaving the area at 8:00, that set us back a bit. However, we decided that it was worth it. In fact, the Aztec Ruins - which are not Aztec in origin at all - were well worth the $5 admission that the National Parks Service charges. As it turns out, these ruins are the work of Pueblo Indians and the name is a misnomer that was based on a poor understanding of ... read more

Roswell I didn’t know much about Roswell, prior to our arrival. In fact the only thing that came to mind was UFO’s and an alleged spaceship crash in 1947. Of course we had to visit the UFO Museum and Research Center while we were in the area, but we also visited the Roswell Museum and Art Center. We enjoyed our visit to Roswell and the surrounding area. I was surprised that this is an area for agriculture, milk production, and pecan groves. Bottomless Lakes State Park We camped at the Bottomless Lakes State Park and learned that they really aren’t bottomless; the deepest one is 90 feet deep. The lakes were formed when the caverns below collapsed and then filled with water from below. There is a stream that drains Lea Lake to the Pecos River ... read more

Hello from UFO central. I had a fun and laid back day today here in Roswell. It started off earlier than I planned when strange noises were all around the RV about 5:20. Oh wait; it was just the city trash truck coming through more than an hour BEFORE sunrise picking up the trash!!! So I was up plenty early, had breakfast and did some housekeeping (vacuuming, mopping, and dishes) before the office opened. I went and checked in and headed into town. The UFO museum was interesting and informative. It’s been fun seeing how Roswell has turned the town into a tourist attraction with the now famous “Roswell Incident”. Lots of tourist trap shops downtown, too. I also went to the Roswell Museum & Art Center. The most interesting part of that for me was ... read more

I'm settled in here in Roswell, NM. I'm going to see if i can upload a few more images from Wichita Mountains wildlife refuge and then see if I can recap the fun day from Post, TX to Roswell, NM. After an hour or more of trying, I've only managed to upload 2 images - or so I think. Hopefully I can find a wi-fi hotspot and upload some more images or learn that the campground has internet. The office was closed for lunch when I arrived and closed again when I got back in this evening.... read more

What a fun day. It was a leisurely 188 mile drive from Post, TX to Roswell, NM. I “gained” another hour as I entered Mountain Standard Time at the NM border. Arrived about noon, got set up, unhooked the Jeep and went out exploring. I went to the Visitor’s Center and stumbled onto the arts and crafts / pottery show. I discovered the show online Saturday and was in search of the visitor’s center to find where then convention center was. Turns out the visitor’s center is in the convention center! Several nice local folks (who were part of the craft show) gave me a lunch recommendation and several things to do and see. They were more helpful than the visitor’s center - but I did get some maps and brochures there. I went for lunch ... read more
