I arrived in the United States yesterday, and met up with my cousins from New Jersey. I arrived in JFK airport, then took a shuttle bus to Newark airport, which is 5 minutes from the Sisk residence. The bus ride was my first time in New York City (I had seen it from Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty when I stayed with the Sisks and Faellas (my cousins) for the summer of 1997). It's great to see the New Yorkers live up to the cultural impressions of them, ie that their larger than life attitude and language match those shown in the movies. (though I think if I ask my Jersey friends for their opinions of New Yorkers they'll give me a different response...) Unfortunatley the reverse cultural exchange may not be the same. ... read more

O mai gard! O mai gard!! America. Where the airline food is better than the Swiss could ever dream of, and the airline shopping literally has something for everyone. Most of the wackiest things ever invented are available for sale at skymall.com, and displayed in an inflight glossy brochure as thick as the latest Harry Potter, which is yours to take home. On top of this epic shopping adventure, you can also peruse the duty free catalogue, which is full of the usual expensive lolly waters (both sprayable and drinkable), and of course, the in-flight magazine, which is mostly full-page ads for hospitals, medical treatments, dental surgeries, and public speaking seminars. The only destinations featured in the magazine were American states, except for a brief article featuring somewhere in Mexico (virtually an American state anyway), ... read more

Today I woke up on the beautiful New Jersey shore, had breakfast with Grandma, Aunt Marilyn, and Mike in historic Ocean Grove, drove up and down the Ocean Avenue through quaint little Avon-By-The-Sea, sunny and vibrant Belmar, and regal Spring Lake. Now I sit in a room at the Newark Liberty International Best Western where I met up with Richard and Sarah. I am surprised I survived the courtesy shuttle ride from the airport to the hotel. We are all too afraid to leave the hotel for fear of getting robbed or catching a stray bullet in Newark. It all just shows the disparity between different parts of New Jersey. Its a small state, but some cities, although located right by each other, are like night and day. I just hate the this part of ... read more

There are several things that alert a traveler that she is about to embark on a very interesting journey: 1) When the last glimpse of American life that she sees is in Newark International Airport. 2) When she is subjected to airport security on three separate occasions on the way to the gate, then told that her sweatshirt is too baggy to ensure passenger safety. 3) When she is cowering on the floor near the entrance gate, surrounded by women in saris, and trying not to get trampled when there is stampede to enter the flying prison that will keep them all captives for the next seven hours, thirty minutes, and 23 seconds. Not that she is counting, of course. They say that, when it comes to airlines, you get what you pay for. A wealthy ... read more

So I left early this morning around 8 AM to catch a train from Washington, DC to New Jersey's EWR (Newark Airport) for my flight to Rome Italy! On my way to the airport I've already met some interesting people who were interested and excited about my upcoming trip. When I arrived in Newark Airport, I met up with my friend PJ. It was his 30th birthday and so we got a chance to hang out for a little while in nearby NYC and grab some lunch before my flight took off at 4:40 PM. Well, I'll be spending the next 7 hours on the plane, (which will feel more like 13 to my body) and will write more once I arrive in Roma! Ciao! Makeeya ... read more

Today was one of adventure. We chose to stay in Neward, NJ just near NYC. We arrived at 3:30 or so and settled into the Hilton Gateway for $129.00 pernight plus parking and anything extra we want. We stay here 2 nights and explore by taking public transportation to Manhatten. We didn't have a clue about how to travel but this hotel has a direct skywalk to Penn Station so we went there and funally learned that we needed PATH - a train- subway that gets over to several stops in Manhatten. The first black lady I spoke to about how to get over there said I needed to take 'PUFF' I thought. PATH was spelled out eventually. The trip over was uneventful. We just ask questions and make new friends (except for those who don't ... read more
